US officials voiced concern Thursday at the sale of French warships to Moscow as they mulled tougher sanctions on Russia for the political upheaval triggered by the Ukraine crisis.

"We have regularly and consistently expressed our concerns about this sale even before we had the latest Russian actions and we will continue to do so," Assistant Secretary for Europe Victoria Nuland told US lawmakers ahead of a visit next week to Washington by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

The first of two Mistral warships is not due to be delivered to Russia until later this year, and France has so far resisted pressure to suspend the controversial $1.2 billion contract.

The Mistral is an advanced helicopter assault ship and France's 2011 agreement to sell them to Russia already triggered protests from the United States and other NATO allies.

The first, named the Vladivostok, is due to be delivered in October, while the second, "The Sebastopol" is to be delivered in 2015 and stationed with the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the Crimea -- annexed by Moscow in March.

Lawmakers also pushed for France to halt the sale, saying it would be a clear sign of global anger at what they said was the "aggression" of Russian President Vladimir Putin toward Ukraine.....snip~

"Oh", this is what some have been worried about all along. Will the Sanction by the Europeans mean something. Do something. Well we just got our answer from France. What say ye?

I assume since these are French ships, they automatically surrender?

No.....this is where we got our Mistrals from, Right? Its got both Democrats and Republicans a lil hot under the collar. The NEO's.

Even worse is hearing how the French talked about it and Nuland.

But French officials reacted with astonishment, denying that US officials had expressed worries over the contract.

"The United States, like the Europeans, have never voiced privately any concerns about this," a French government official told AFP, asking not to be identified.

"And we are anyway used to such thundering declarations from her (Nuland). She's a neo-con. And the fact that it comes from her is actually reassuring

Fabius is still likely to come under pressure from US officials during his visit to the US capital next week, although he did say in late March that Paris may cancel the Mistral sale if Moscow does not change its policies towards Kiev.....snip~

Actually, it was meant as a joke.

This is just the sort of thing we usually get with France.

Spare me.

The French have a higher win / loss ratio than we do against truly viable opponents. As a side note, the somewhat viable opponent (an opponent of equal size capable of occupying large portions of the United States) that we fought was the CSA in 1861.
Lets just say that it took a while to beat them- and that beating them involved a few mishaps.

France might come though if other sanctions are purused (banking etc). Evidently, they have been keen investors in economic intelligence for generations and may well know how to "put the hurt" on countries via economic pressure.

I dont blame them for refusing the cancel the ships. Doing so would cost the French hundreds, if not thousands of high paying precision manufacturing jobs. These types of jobs have become icreasingly scarce in Europe and in the USA.

Heya Cryptic :2wave: .....well we sent the Taylor to Georgia and we have pressed for the more severe sanctions. Than what the Europeans were looking to do.

With the French running around and sticking their nose into others business while filing non stop resolutions in the UN for Enforceable action with other countries. We should make it known that it would be wise to drop the contract.

Update: France has now said they will still sell and send the Aircraft Carriers to Russia.

France won't cancel warship deal with Russia: sources.....

France will press ahead with a 1.2 billion-euro ($1.66 billion) contract to sell helicopter carriers to Russia because cancelling the deal would do more damage to Paris than to Moscow, French diplomatic sources said on Monday.

France has come under pressure from Washington and some European partners to reconsider its supply of high-tech military hardware to Moscow. It had said it would review the deal in October - but not before

However, French diplomatic sources said on Monday the 2011 contract with Russia for two Mistral helicopter carriers, with an option for two more, would not be part of a third round of sanctions against Moscow. "The Mistrals are not part of the third level of sanctions. They will be delivered. The contract has been paid and there would be financial penalties for not delivering it. "It would be France that is penalized. It's too easy to say France has to give up on the sale of the ships. We have done our part."

The Russian defense ministry warned France in March it would have to repay the cost of the contract and additional penalties if it canceled the deal.

Russia's Mistral purchase would give it access to advanced technology, alarming some of France's NATO allies.....snip~

If there is a rhyme or reason to our policy in Ukraine I have yet to see it.

We keep blaming Russia for the turmoil in eastern/southern Ukraine but I have yet to hear one single US official acknowledge the fact that it is the presence of fascists like Right Sector in the new Ukrainian government(which we have backed wholeheartedly to this point) which is the real catalyst behind the turmoil. These silly games we keep playing, threatening sanctions, serve no purpose than to deflect attention from the fact that we are supporting a bunch of Nazis who will never be able to deliver a peaceful, democratic, and united Ukraine. We've backed ourselves into a corner by providing "legitimacy" to people like Dmytro Yarosh and his Right Sector SS and now we're trying to lay a smokescreen by blaming it all on Russia as the whole thing falls apart right before our eyes.

No but you should see the galleys and dining rooms in them!
