America Sends Missile-Destroying Warship Into Russian Waters.....

I highly doubt those ships would stand up to modern forces.

Checked a little more and there are 3 French ships out there with USS Donald Cook and the Russians have noted that once a NATO warship has done its 21 days, it leaves and is replaced by one or more.

The French ships include "Dupuy de Lôme" and "Dupleix". They are joined by Alize soon.

They wont have enough.....and even if those ships can't stand up to modern forces. They can be used.....adding that much more air defense and to be used as diversions. The Russians by themselves are out numbering us 5 to 1.....if not more.

Russia Deploys 60 Ships near Ukraine.....

Russia-Deploys-60-Ships-Near-Ukraine.jpg

Russia has deployed 60 ships on the East border of Ukraine and in Crimea, Acting Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Ihor Tenykh said on Tuesday, March 11.

In addition to 60 ships, Russia has sent about 220,000 servicemen, 1800 tanks, 400 helicopters and 150 aircrafts in Crimea and on the Ukrainian East border, according to the Defence Minister’s statement.....snip~

-- The Russians by themselves are out numbering us 5 to 1.....if not more --

Those numbers are what used to be the standard ratio during the cold war. For every NATO tank or NATO serviceman you faced 5 attackers.

I've been out of service a long time so I couldn't guess at the Russian's capabilities now.

LOL, I spent 4 pages being chased by fallenangel in the Ukraine thread to provide video of 18 missing helicopters when all I needed was a Russian defence minister telling us they'd deployed 400?

Too bad that ship cant sponsor any "independence referendums" in the Russian Federation.

I wonder if Putin will try to envoke and enforce the old Soviet claims forbidding foreign warships from approaching Sevastapol?
USS Yorktown (CG-48) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most had not sailed in years and the submarine was about 35 years old. The Ukrainian submariners are probably grateful the Russians siezed it- that way they dont have to risk their lives diving in it anymore.

Mornin' Cryptic. :2wave: Yeah, especially when they will be dealing with the Russians and their Ships.

The other 2 ships we sent, are out of the region.....as Putin and Russia complained to Turkey about them staying past the deadline for them.

Turkey rejects Russian claims over US ships in Black Sea.....

Turkey on Saturday dismissed as "out of the question" claims from Russia that it had allowed US warships to stay longer in the Black Sea than permitted under international law.

Russia has complained that US warships have remained in the Black Sea longer than the 21 days allowed by an international treaty, amid ongoing tensions between Moscow and the West.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said last week that US vessels had "a couple of times" stayed longer than 21 days, contravening the 1936 Montreux Convention

But Ankara hit back, with the foreign ministry dismissing as "odd" Russia's insistence on the convention, which limits the stay of warships from countries that do not border the Black Sea.

Turkey, a NATO ally, has said it does not recognise the result of the referendum, voicing fears about the fate of the Turkish-speaking Tatar minority in Crimea, which was part of the Ottoman Empire until it was conquered by Russia in the late 18th century.....snip~

The Russians are being sticklers on international convention? That's a laugh. If Obama has any balls, he'll ignore the convention limitations. We could close the Bosporus in a matter of hours, leaving Tartus twisting in the wind. I wonder how Putin would feel about that?

Mornin' Maggie.

Well Putin was complaining when we sent the 4 destroyers to Spain to act as Missile defense from Iran. Not that I think he is worried when he already has destroyers and more ships in the vicinity than what we and NATO has.

aegis-bmd_large.jpg

File this story under the rubric: "Be careful what you wish for." When the U.S. guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG-75) departed Norfolk Naval Base to take up station at the Spanish naval base in Rota two months ago, it set off alarm bells in Moscow.

Accusing the U.S. of attempting to set up a "strategic offensive potential" in Europe, Russian President Putin loudly condemned the move. U.S. officials calmly explained that the Cook, and its sister ships USS Ross (DDG-71), USS Carney (DDG-64), and USS Porter (DDG-78), were headed to Spain to set up a missile shield against the Iranian missile threat -- and posed no threat to Russia. But Russian State Duma foreign affairs committee Chairman Alexei Pushkov declared this explanation "fake."

In the Russians' view, you see, the presence of a fleet of U.S. destroyers in Europe, armed with a version of the Aegis missile defense system tweaked to shoot down ballistic missiles, is a threat aimed squarely at Russia's nuclear arsenal.....snip~

As I said, about time Russian soldiers in Crimea get bitch slapped back to Russia!

This has to be the most serious message sent to Putin yet.

Just wish we Europeans were more united with the States on this. I really hope there are more than just the one French warship out there with the Americans.

I second this.

Do not worry. Fallen may come and offer alternative explanations to these military movements also. He may come saying "These 60 ships were always there and are just going home. They have to stay there until they get refueled" or so ;) .

Then Thriller could second that and would tell us that the dolphins that he telepathically speaks in the Black Sea have long known the steps of Obama and have put the ships prior to Crimea's invasion. Putin communicates to both aliens and Gods according to him and would explain the extreme intelligence to call on 60 ships being there just in case prior to Crimea and these allied movements.

Too true.

you're behind the times my friend - he's on about a Slavic empire out in space now.

Heya HB.....I am willing to bet that Putin knows about that weakness.

Showing the flag
Ever since Russian armed forces invaded and annexed the Ukrainian province of Crimea last month, the U.S. government has struggled to find an appropriate response. Trade sanctions and visa freezes on Russian government officials could punish Russia for what it's done in Crimea. But what could the U.S. do to deter further aggression?

This week, it appears the Obama administration hit upon its solution. It took the USS Donald Cook and sent it to Russia. Armed with new Standard Missile-3 IB weaponry from Raytheon (NYSE: RTN ) , the Cook boasts a robust version of Lockheed Martin's (NYSE: LMT ) Aegis ballistic missile defense system capable of shooting down supersonic, high-trajectory missiles such as Russia uses to carry its nuclear warheads. The warship was modified for ballistic missile defense (BMD) duty as part of a $22 billion project to build shipborne and land-based missile defense stations to protect Europe from Iranian long-range missiles. But just as President Putin predicted, it appears to have use in countering Russian threats as well.

cook_large.jpg

Departing its new base in Spain, the Cook is now en route to the Black Sea, where it will "show the flag" off the Ukrainian and Russian coasts -- a concrete demonstration to President Putin of how aggression in Crimea could bring about the very thing he fears: U.S. ballistic missile defenses set up right next to the Russian border.

What this move does show us, though, is that the $22 billion ballistic missile defense system has wider application than it was initially planned for. It can help to contain the threat of a future Iranian nuclear missile and it can help to disarm Russia's nuclear arsenal as well.....snip~

America Sends Missile-Destroying Warship Into Russian Waters. President Putin Presumably Not Pleased.

Our ship arrived there yesterday. Now it will sit off the Coast of the Ukraine. Think we have Putin's attention now? What say ye?

We were to have a missle base in poland but one of the first things the chump in chief did was cancel it. He did the same to our missle base in AK, and then resumed construction after North Korea got bold with him.

Weakness, does not indicate strength. I dont think Obama knows this.

Heya USC. :2wave: I hear what you are saying.....and while it has come late. This was the type of move that should have been made from the beginning.

I agree, but at the same time this is nothing definitive. And as the hours go by its looking like Russia may be about to invade Ukraine yet again. In the end, Putin knows Obama isn't going to do anything.

Well if he is going to do it.....he better do it before Biden gets there. Not while Biden is there. Otherwise we will be hearing from the War Hawks on the matter. Not to mention.....Obama gave Putin another warning. How many does this make so far?

I dont know how many, but Im sure the 8th time wont be more effective than the first.

Does this mean that the U.S. Navy has solved the problem with the Aegis defense system ? It was discovered in the Persian Gulf that the Aegis weapons platform is a blue water weapons system and had problems when in the littorals.

I'm sure there are some Russian Akula class attack submarines shadowing the USS Cook armed with it's 230 MPH Shkval torpedos.
That's correct, 230 MPH.

The Shkval is fired from the standard 533-mm torpedo tube at a depth of up to 328 ft (100 m). The torpedo exits the tube at 50 knots (93 kmh) and then ignites the rocket motor, propelling the weapon to speeds four to five times faster than other conventional torpedoes. The weapon reportedly has an 80 percent kill probability.

I hadn't envisioned a time in the near future when Russia might use it's nuclear forces but, this bold move by the US might make it come sooner than expected.

Dangerous indeed.

The idea that Russia will use its nuclear weapons is utterly preposterous.

April 2014

Within weeks, a shipyard in St. Petersburg is expected to float out the second of six diesel-electric submarines to be delivered to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet over the next two years. Meanwhile, NOVOROSSIYSK, the first of the class, is set to be commissioned in July. The class has advanced stealth technology, extended combat range and can strike land, surface and underwater targets.

It's been years since that fleet has had a new sub. When these boats are active, they are going to be difficult to detect; the U.S. Navy calls such diesel-electric boats "black holes in the ocean." If necessary, these NOVOROSSIYSK-class submarines (at left) can go for a month and a half without the need to refuel. Each has six bow 533-mm torpedo tubes; the torpedoes can be launched as deep as 790 feet.

Seems largely symbolic rather than meaningful. The more I observe Putin, the more I'm beginning to think he may be insane. This appears to be a man hell bent on creating a conflict on the doorstep of Europe. A man that is more concerned about the appearance of Russia (glory, pride, nationalism, etc.) than the actual welfare of his people and his neighbors. This loose cannon is extremely dangerous.

Another good reason to keep your head in the sand and ignore reality....amateurs in your beloved regime could well get us all killed.

Welcome to the world. Its always interesting to see people come to the realization. Nothings changed, including human nature.
