Yellowstone Bison Running for their lives !!!

Vesuvius was not a big eruption. Only reason it is famous is because Romans built 2 towns too close to the mountain. Mount St. Helen was massively bigger than Vesuvius. The one you want to seriously worry about comparison wise is Krakatoa or Santorin type of eruption.. and in Yellowstone that is a possible planet killer type of event.

Nah. To be sure, whatever country (or countries) are in present day United States when it blows will be effectively finished, but it's not a planet killer. You want a planet killer? Look to the Permian Triassic extinction event, in which 90% of all marine life and 70% of land life went extinct because the sea floor suddenly upped and belched out methane hydrate.

Besides, "planet killer" is used incorrectly. There's a difference between mass extinction events and the ability of a thing to render the planet permanently uninhabitable.

No doubt.

But when you think about it, in geological terms, 10,000 years is the blink of an eye. It's creepy.

Basically, the planet is a blink from seeing most of its life obliterated. Fortunately for us, it takes thousands of generations to equal a blink.

Yeah, but who knows what civilization will look like 10,000 years from now. 10,000 years ago I think our greatest bragging right was the discovery of fire. Of course, to be fair, 10,000 years from now that may also be our greatest bragging right. 10k years is a pretty long time for us.

It depends on how much crap is thrown into the atmosphere. When Krakato exploded it lead to a couple of degrees fall in world wide temperatures and changes in growing patterns for crops. The ash clouds could be seen as far away as London, England.. and Krakato is in Indonesia.

Considering Yellowstone is a many many many times larger than Krakato, then well. One thing for sure is that most of the US and Canada is going to history, and with it probably much of the planet for at least a few decades.

At the least our children will suffer from lack of Internet.

I've read that the Yellow Stone Caldera is overdue for one hell of a eruption.

But something tells me if the quake was a real indicator of something Big we would've heard something by now.

Not a chance in hell that we'd get an advanced warning of impending doom like that by the government. Why? Because there would be enough to worry about without needing to worry about the general public losing their minds and exacerbating the situation.

Are you referring to Krakatoa? It was indeed a devastating eruption that had worldwide effects.

Besides being larger, Yellowstone isn't surrounded by ocean to blunt it's explosive force and lessen the manmade chemicals and dust thrown into the atmosphere. That multiplies the problem with a Yellowstone eruption.

Krakatoa has rebuilt itself and is now called Anak Krakatau (child of Krakatoa). Currently it is about the same size as Krakatoa was pre-eruption.

Yea, my bad on the spelling! And yep it has "rebuilt" it self. The explosion was massive and could be felt thousands of KM away and the Tsunami it created killed over 50k people at the time. They think that she might blow again soonish in geological terms, which aint too comforting.

I agree. Yellowstone is one of the world's largest calderas, if not the largest. It's a supervolcano and a big eruption would have the potential to create an existential crisis for a significant share of humanity, as its impacts would be global. The Toba eruption and its after effects might provide some insight.

I think it's funny that they're using the highway, moving single-file on the right side.

@ least they know the rules of the road, keep right, except to pass.

It is proven that animals can sense the change in magnetic forces and gravitational forces better than humans. when you start seeing swarms of animals trying to flee an area something bad is going to happen.

i have heard the same reports that yellowstone is due or a catastrophic explosion. whether it happens or not is a different story, but from what i understand if and when it blows it will make mount St. Helen look like a firecracker.

it would be a Vesuvius type of explosion or worse.

Animals are valid indicators of something that's about to happen.

Take my dog for instance, whenever there's a thunderstorm eminent, he runs under the dining table, and has that "look out, I'm a crazed dog, looking for a place to hide" in his eyes.

When we lived near Elephant Butte, when the thunderstorms came through, because of the mountains and the lake and Rio Grande, thunder used to just roll, and roll and roll on forever. The dog had nowhere to hide, so we'd both get onto the bunk in the camper, and I'd hold his vibrating body til it passed.

mcdonalds just announced plans for the new McBison Bacon cheeseburger.

Mine does the same thing when I'm about to Dutch Oven my wife and kids on Friday movie nights.

I would like to think that in the thousands of years until it's expected for the caldera to blow we would develop methods to carry out a series of controlled pressure releases. Or worse comes to worse we've made at least some inroads to colonizing other planets.
