WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would Stay C

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

I bet it didn't take much pressure to get to agree. What would the Haitian government prefer, a company that paid low wages, or no company, nor wages at all?

Right, because only the US creates companies?

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

I believe a US minimum wage could be applied to US Firms operating overseas as a form of equality of opportunity.

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

If you ask the Haitians what they would prefer...a job that only pays 31 cents an hour....or no job at all....which do you think they would chose?

If you ask the Haitians what they would prefer...a priest named Aristides who is pro labor or a USA State Dept./CIA coup and a new supreme leader who is pro USA Corporate...which do you think they would chose?

And we wonder why so many people in this world hate the United States...

No, only ignorant people ask such questions. The OP is a snippet view of real world cast against political angle for sensational headlines.

If the cost of doing business in Haiti goes up, profits go down. Levi's and Hanes would be forced to lower profits, thus lower investments while their competitors who are producing in lower cost countries... gain investment and market share. That's a reality check the OP leaves out. Some people will fall for the emotional "OMG SLAVE LABOUR big rich companies exploiting!!!" That's just an uneducated pov.

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

The U.S. government making the rest of the world safe for American businesses has a LONG history.

And that, of course, makes it right.

Never mid the fact the US government, SECRETLY, manipulated a foreign power for slave wages AND exported jobs from the US.

That's a winning strategy for sure.

So much for the most "open and transparent administration in history"...it's preferred American unskilled workers get 99 weeks of pay not to work while exporting jobs at slave wages....that's good for Amerika! Just not the people

So you have no problem with our State Department going to bat for corporations in foreign countries to undermine a country's attempt to improve the standard of living for its people?

I sure do.

So you are against raising minimum wage in America for that same reason I guess.

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

Does that somehow justify us pressuring Haiti and other countries from pressuring the Haitian state to keep wages lower?

Hanes will find a place to make their goods at the price they want whether you like it or not. If you want people to stay out of work, then carry on.

Of course you do, emotions drive you. It's okay Maggie, had the wage levels gone up, Levi's an Hanes might have moved their factories and jobs would have been lost and you would feel good knowing that "wages went up" even though jobs went away. But it's the feeling that counts right?

Min wage is a stupid idea that does far more harm then good.

That is not our decision to make. Our State Department should not be getting involved in another country's business. And most especially not when it's only to benefit state-side corporations. How is a country ever to improve itself if it's blackmailed or coerced into holding wages down by the government of the United States?

I agree. I just wondered if the lady I addressed this to agrees since she is defending a very low wage in other countries.

Post a list of all those other companies?

You're making the assumption that the jobs would have moved with the original wage increase. It's questionable these corps would have bothered getting the US government involved if they intended to follow through on that.

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

Which rather neatly (if obviously) sidesteps the actual question: is it right for the U.S. to pressure Haiti into keeping wages lower?

If it means those people have a job when they otherwise would not, then yes, it is right.

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

Clearly the US government knows what's better for Haiti than the Haitian government does.

Maybe.

How many governments has Haiti had in the last 30 years?

Seems they cannot keep a government around for a generation.

With that track record it is hard to claim that they know what is best.

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

I wouldnt call China poor, they have the #2 economy in the world now.

They have people working for a couple of dollars a day there, so...

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

I have no issue if the corporations want to lobyb the Haitan government to do this.

I don't really see a point to our State Department doing such lobbying.

I see how it serves the corporations interests to keep the pay down.

I'm not quite sure how it serves American interests whether or not the wages go up or not.

We have people working for a couple of Dollars a day here too, those illegals mowing your lawn, for example.

No, you can't get those guys interesting in working for that. They won't take less than $40 for the lawn (< 1 hour of work) and $80 to clean the house (3 to 4 hours).

What a country! The illegals make way more in the US than skilled citizens in China do.

I'm pretty sure that going without a job in Haiti means starvation. You guys sure are glib about that. The Haitian government was about to scotch that whole industry and Clinton steps in to keep them working. I say, "Good job, Clinton."

And, by the way, a lot of people will benefit from the availability of low cost biuejeans. In Texas the illegals all wear them.

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

Are you serious? You really do believe the only corporations in existence are in the US? You really believe people/communities cannot create their own businesses?

Re: WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would St

This statement, and the situation that is the thread topic, reminds me of the observation of Thomas Aquinas: "If you can live amid injustice without anger, you are immoral".

That the US government enforces a grossly unjust situation in Haiti is no surprise to me, but disgusting nonetheless. By way of corporate influence, this country has reached a level of fascism.

Thanks to Wikileaks for yet another sobering insight.

A appreciate your insight. I don't always agree with you or your views but at least you are very consistent. A lot of people that use the title "Libertarian" are really just hardcore conservative corporatist.
