Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended [W:148:245]

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Guns in schools are no laughing matter, I suspect we can all agree on that? While a 3 day suspension is ridiculous, a consequence of some sort is fair. I suspect the true spirit of the idea was to remove even "joking" about guns from schools. I have no problem with that idea whatsoever.

Thank you for your compliance, comrade.

We are talking fingers not guns.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

I didn't say expel the kid. I would suggest you actually read my post. But then I know you don't do that.

He is right.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Most rational people can make the distinction.

There are very few things in life that are certain. But the one thing we certainly can rely on is 10 year olds being rational.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

You're right. Let's expel the kid because the school is a "gun-free zone".

Oh My God!!!

It's a bird....no, it's a plane....it's a finger gun!

Save yourselves!

Women and children without fingers first!

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Pretending to shoot another student in the head is pretty sadistic behaviour in and of itself, especially since the kid knew the rules.

Oh, for god sakes. :doh No, it's not.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

What must be stopped and considered a criminal act of terrorism is if a teacher points at a child. Death threats like that should not be tolerated and treated as harshly as possible.

That is true. On My Favorite Martian I saw that a finger can do a lot of damage.

It wasn't innocent, either.

All the more reason not to encourage that behaviour.

I think if they had searched him they would have found at least 5 more concealed. They got lucky.....this time. Those finger guns have a near unlimited magazine capacity.

If they get caught touching someone of the opposite sex at that age (or even the same sex), they should nail them with pre-statutory sexual harassment. Nip that right in the bud before it turns into date rape.

Sure, because kids haven't been doing such things for generations now.

He was told several times not to do it.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Is there a more deadly weapon of mass destruction today, than the loaded finger of a 10 year old? I think not....

I don't think anyone has suggested the school should "encourage" it.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Bottom of the article:

"A similar policy was cited last year when a Maryland school suspended a 7-year-old boy who had chewed a Pop-Tart into a gun shape."

The rule is not about safety. It is about indoctrinating children to fear and hate firearms - the next generation of anti-guns. Teach them young.

Sometimes. Getting a bit older now so not as much as I used to.

If you mean the finger thing, perhaps we need to rethink letting kids watch hip-hop videos and the like. What with all the fingers like guns thing.

Hyperbole much?

Moot with a keyboard and an internet connection?

Why don't we just teach kids to respect guns and that they aren't toys and that you don't pretend to point guns at peoples heads?

I taught my kids that lesson. But I used real guns and taught them to respect them rather than fear them.

Fingers ≠ guns. This isn't a hard concept. I mean, hell, it's not even a toy gun / water pistol.

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Hmmm kinda a silly policy but the kid can't say he wasn't warned and there does need to be consequences for not following school policy. I wonder if the father even bothered to read the three newsletters sent home about it.

The fifth-grader said he was "just playing around." But district spokesman Jeff Warner told The Columbus Dispatch ( Boy points finger like gun, gets suspended | The Columbus Dispatch ) that Devonshire Principal Patricia Price has warned students about pretend gun play numerous times this year, and everyone should know the rules by now. He said warnings have been included in three newsletters sent home with kids.

Warner says the boy put his finger to the side of the other student's head and pretended to shoot "kind of execution style."

"The kids were told, 'If you don't stop doing this type of stuff, there would be consequences,'" Warner said. "It's just been escalating."

OMG! It's escalating! If we don't put an end to this right away, who knows where it might lead? We might have children playing “cowboys and indians” or “cops and robbers”. They might dare to use their minds and their imaginations. We certainly cannot have any of that. How are we going to raise children to be mindless obedient servants to government, if they insist on thinking and imagining and playing?

Re: Ohio Student Points Finger Like Gun, Is Suspended

Policies like this are for small minded bureaucrats, incapable of logical or coherent thought.
