Russia Moves to Deploy Troops in Ukraine

Funny how in one breath you libs give Reagan all the blame for creating UBL then in the next breath give Carter credit for arming the Afghan freedom fighters against the USSR.

"You libs"? Go ahead and find the post where I said that. I'll wait.

Why is the face that he was a Democrat relevant?

Because politics and politicians demand polarization to stay at status quo levels or rise.

Money.

Plain and simple. Right now, he has to PURCHASE the goods he gets from them. Far easier and cheaper to just TAKE them.

Why do companies but other companies?

You may have a point. Russia is rich in oil and natural gas, which he feeds to Europe as long as they do what he says. Disobey and he stops the supply. Simple way to control the situation, since people need to stay warm. Will he do the same with the food supply?

Greetings, KevinKohler. :2wave:

:agree: The Ukrainian people are not a down-trodden group like we see in so many parts of the world today. They have enjoyed their independence for a long time, and they are apparently not willing to once again be under a "big daddy" regime. I don't know what prompted Putin's move, other than the fact that he may want to recreate the old glory days of the Czars and the USSR, and have everything under Moscow's thumb.

Putin has decided on Crimea as his target, and it makes me wonder why. The country is rich in natural resources, though, plus it provides much of the food for the rest of the country since the land is excellent for farming. Is it a power grab for food resources in the future? Everyone becomes a peon again like in the old days, with centralized planning from Moscow? Interesting...

Greetings, humbolt. :2wave:

Putin is intent on securing their warm water ports in order to exert ever more influence over the entire area. Portraying the west as weak and unreliable serves his interests fully in that regard. Right now as we leave Afghanistan, the only way to get our heavy equipment out of there is by rail through Russia unless we put our faith in Pakistan. Who of sound mind would do that? Further, Putin is additionally securing all those fuel pipelines which serve most of the countries to the west and can bring the EU to it's knees in a day. From his perspective, there's nothing to lose here. The timing was impeccable - right after the Olympics - an expression of international comity. Nobody was looking for that. Notice the speed with which Russia moved with all the circumstances required in place. I understand Ukraine is now mobilizing. They aren't a push over, but probably no match for the Russians in the end - which shouldn't take long to reach. Eastern Europe is no doubt doing a lot of soul searching right about now.

It is not relevant to the OP just a drive by comment on somebody saying we take over countries all the time and would do so to Mexico.

You're the one who said it, to attempt to score cheap partisan points. Fair game, but it just exposes you as contextually ignorant.

Taking over Mexico is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. Moronic is too kind of a term - who is suggesting that?

Because politics and politicians demand polarization to stay at status quo levels or rise.

The only person who gives a rat's ass that James ****ing Polk was a Democrat is Sawyer. I don't think anyone else is even mentioning it, since somehow Mexico came into the situation. This particular thing has nothing to do with actual politics or politicians and everything to do with Sawyer trying (poorly) to land a partisan shot.

I think there is a vast difference between Gorbachev and KGB agent Putin. So it is hard to say what difference would it make if Reagan were in office or for that matter if Truman was in office.

Since you are unhappy with Obama here, what would you propose we do? Would you send our troops into the Ukraine?

I think Obama should:

Get a Russian leader off to the side and let him know that he would have more latitude after the election.
Get out the red crayon and draw a line that nobody better cross.
Get some sleep while your embassies are burning and Ambassadors are being killed.. After all, you will have a busy day camaigning tomorrow.
Warn the crap out of Putin that there will be "costs" if you continue.
Define those costs as getting the whole world to isolate Russia.
Get on the phone and have a 90 minute phone call. Be sure there are plenty of cameras around to record you being really, really, tough.

Next up" Get a whole box of big chips, put one on your shoulder and dare Putin to knock it off.

Or, you could either stay out of other peoples business, or be prepared to back your play.

And as per usual with you libs as you suffer defeat in debate you turn to personal attacks. Time for my breakfast anyway.

Excellent analyses! LMAO.

Wow, that's a big fat whopping lie. Deuce never suggested we take over Mexico. He simply posed a hypothetical scenario. That is stunningly dishonest of you to claim.

I appreciate your words... but I think this is a fine time for Obama to go on a Golf vacation. Say something like 5 courses in 3 days somewhere nice, and not try to be something he's not with Putin. Yes, I'm actually saying he should go golfing, as ironic as that may seem. It's his best course of action given the situation and circumstances.

:agree: Mobilizing as quickly as they did is not something that is normally an overnight decision. Financing the Olympics was a huge cost to Russia, but it may have been a useful foil to distract attention from his real agenda? It's starting to look that way! Clever on his part, since we were distracted and angry about his decision on not allowing gays to participate, while I would bet all my money he could personally care less about what a person's sexuality is. It did serve his purpose, though, in taking advantage of all the fluff and hoop-la the media created about it, while he concentrated on his power grab agenda.

While parts of the world may be sympathetic to our decision to treat everyone equally, raw power still carries more weight. What options does Obama have at this point? Get militarily involved, which most Americans don't agree with, and from what I've been reading we may not be ready for? Do nothing except lodge protests at the UN, which may be futile? Try negotiating, which Putin probably expects, and is prepared for? Interesting...

What makes this different is we would not take over Mexico and install a pupett president. Putin is rebuilding the Soviet empire and obama's "reset" policy has been a huge failure. If Reagan was pres Putin would not do this.

That's total conjecture. I say Vietnam wouldn't have happened if Franklin Pierce was President. Maybe Obama wouldn't be acting the way he is if Stalin were still around. Either way is silly because Reagan and Stalin are both dead. What matters is not what would have happened in imaginary "What if the Holy Roman Empire were still around?"-land.

Putin is not rebuilding the Soviet Union, if he were he'd be sending in a lot more troops, and he wouldn't stop at Ukraine. Yanukovich was not a puppet installed by Putin, he was elected by citizens of Ukraine. Until Ukrainians learn to stop overthrowing whoever they don't like, there isn't going to be a democracy there. This is like the second or third time they've done this in the past 20 years, instead of having Constitutional elections.

As long as Ukraine exists the way it is, there's a decent chance of a pro-Russian President being elected. If they just go and have a revolution every time that happens, they won't have a functioning democracy.

Leave it to a lib to defend Putin.

Like all the cons that jumped to Gadhaffi's defense? I don't give a rat's ass about Putin. Everytime something happens (and half the time it doesn't), you can trust some con to jump in and say "Putin's trying to put the USSR back together" when his actions don't actually bear that out. How long has he basically been in charge? You don't think he would have invaded Kazakhstan by now?

We should be teaching Ukraine how to have a functioning democracy, not standing behind their "revolutions" every 5 years.

Re: In truth, I'm not sure I've ever watched Fox News other than those excerpts poste

Not sure how the title of this thread got screwed up, it's supposed to be this, maybe a mod could fix it.

Russia Moves to Deploy Troops in Ukraine

Yeah, the thread title is confusing. Very dangerous situation unfolding in Ukraine and will have international ripple affects.

Regarding Fox news, it seems to be the only network now devoted to actual news generally speaking. CNN only has editorials now it seems, and movies. I'm watching the penis looking guy that hosts Reliable Sources now, and all I've seen are liberal talking points, not even a discussion about Ukraine. MSNBC is an arm of the administration.

Think I've covered both the title and content of the thread here. Were you around during the cold war?

When a superpower makes a move to (re)take territory then you have very few choices even if your nation is also a superpower. What did Bush 43 do when Russia "took control of" Georgia? What, exactly, would you have Obama's telepromter do about this latest Russian adventure?

One thing to do would to not make idle threats about there being a price to pay. I don't recall Bush 43 making any comments about how we can not stand for Russians taking over Georgia. It is not in our sphere of influence. In 1948 Truman made some comments about Korea being outside our sphere of influence and shortly thereafter North Koreans attacked. Words have meanings. If you think that you have a chance to get some kind of pressure or international support do so. If not, just say nothing. Obama ridiculed Romney for thinking that Russia was a geopolitical problem. Turns out Romney was right.
