NYC mayor's SUV caught breaking traffic laws

The footage shows de Blasio's vehicles starting their journey in a quiet residential stretch of Maspeth, where the mayor had just held a news conference discussing his administration's plans to combat potholes.
The two bulky, black vehicles did not stop at two stop signs in the neighborhood. Later, the CBS camera — which was in a car that followed the mayor's motorcade — showed de Blasio going 40 mph in an area where the speed limit was 30 mph, and then nearly 60 mph in a 45-mph zone.
The SUVs were also shown changing lanes without using their directional signals. The total number of violations witnessed by the news crew would yield a suspended license, according to the CBS report.
It was not clear from the footage if de Blasio was aware of the traffic infractions.
The mayor's cars are typically driven by members of de Blasio's security detail, which is made up of NYPD detectives. Security protocols suggest that de Blasio sit in the back seat because the SUV's side windows, unlike the front windshield, are comprised of bulletproof-glass. But de Blasio, who is 6-foot-5, frequently sits in the front, where he has more room to stretch out.
Just two days earlier, de Blasio released his "Vision Zero" traffic safety plan which aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities. The plan proposed reducing the citywide speed limit to 25 mph, detailing more NYPD officers to enforce speeding violations and toughening penalties for on speeding drivers.

The next authoritarian control-freak mayor of NYC is exempt from laws and even from what he claims should be imposed on others. Nothing new about that.

Non-story and "gotcha" reporting. There are so many other legitimate things to criticize this guy about, this is just "gotcha" reporting at the local level.

This may be "gotcha" reporting, but there is legitimate news in pointing out the hypocrisy of elected officials. Yes, we all know it happens, but it should be documented and broadcast whenever we find it.

The news crew following the mayor must have been bored to tears...

It might not be important, but it is very disrespectful. This behavior just reaffirms the theory that the laws are only for the "little people", not for the rulers. DeBlasio was swept into office by allegedly supporting those very same "little people" so it is particularly egregious behavior in his case.

Not that it seems to help, but criticizing the aristocracy is one of the few rights they haven't trampled to death yet.

If a camera crew followed you around, no doubt they could rack up a list of things you did wrong.

At any rate, the mayor isn't exempt -- he was in the passenger seat.

Yawn.

While I do agree that there are often different rules for the connected versus the unconnected, typically the unconnected don't have a camera crew following them around either.

If I had a camera crew following me around, I think I would be on my best behavior, particularly if I were a public figure and supposedly setting an example for others.

Again, we're not talking about his behavior.

Additionally, we have no idea whether or not he was aware he was being stalked.

Seriously, are we this desperate for scandal?

IF, the biggest word in the English language...IF the camera crew was in a marked vehicle, IF you or anyone noticed the camera, IF the mayor was even aware the traffic violations had occurred....

When I used to visit Philly on a very regular basis I watched the local news, one 'expose' was on people who had dozens of unpaid traffic fines, some had suspended licenses, some bench warrants, some used rather odd dodges to be hauled before a judge. But these were just regular smucks, not politicians.

This is good to tweek the mayor but beyond that, not much. It reminds me of the 'stink' raised over McCain not knowing how many homes he owned. A good laugh, and then life goes on... :peace

I didn't mean to imply this was a catastrophic event. In theory though, isn't good behavior expected?

I never blow through a stop sign even if there is no visible traffic. Within reason, the whole system functions on "contract". That is why nothing but a painted line keeps you from a head on collision. It seems to me that if you are promoting "contract", you should be observing it.

Let me put it this way. This guy is publicly arguing for traffic safety. Now, since he obviously doesn't believe in it, how much influence will his impassioned pleas result in? Mission Unaccomplished.

You think the Mayor has no say on what his driver does expecially when he is sitting in the front passenger seat.

This brings to mind that other mayor, whats-his-name that put prostitutes in jail but he was caught with a couple.

You ASS-u-me the mayor knew the driver 'blew' through stop signs and was exceeding the speed limit.

Dunno if I'd call it a contract, but I get the point, and far more than painted lines keep head-ons from happening, alert drivers and a lack of deer/cows in the road help.

Funny you should mention 'blowing' through a stop sign, was it a never slowed down or a 'california stop'. Coming home tonight I 'blew through' a stop sign out in the middle of no damn place Oklahoma. I routinely drop my speed from 65 to 35 and run right through it. I can see a few miles in either direction.

Good for you if you never violated the 'contract' you mentioned, but please include speeding, being distracted, and drifting left of center, following too close and pulling out in front of other drivers. The last one amazed me back east... it was as if they expected you to miss them rather than obey the yield to traffic laws. Another thing I noticed back east- speed on the Philly turnpike is 55 in many places- do 55 and a little old lady in a VW bug blows by you and gives you the finger. So speed limits back there seem a suggestion, not a law.

easy to tut-tut, but I have driven back there. Speed limits are not set in stone and offensive driving seems the norm. Ever driven in Philly, NJ??? I have, buckle up cowboy.... :peace

It's not a non-story if the "gotcha" is true and relevant. This is a mayor who wants to fine tens or hundreds of thousands of people - for what he does or authorizes and doesn't pay a dime. Tickets are also misdemeanor offenses for which he has authorized police to commit such crimes for his benefit. Its not a non-story at all.

Yeah and you know what it's say? It's saying "nobody gives a ****"

Yes and no. People, such as of your messages, are so much sheeple and non-thinking followers it does not matter what officials do. It is only whether they have D or R after their name.

I didn't care about much of the stuff that Bush got thrown out there as scandal either. Republicans and Dems both do it. It is not a strictly partisan behavior to try to slander someone with meaningless nonsense like this. Let's talk about their politics instead. It's much more relevant.

Actually, it's a bit worse than that

In response to a rising number of pedestrian deaths, DeBlasio recently instituted a crackdown on jaywalking. It doesn't look good for him to promote pedestrian safety while speeding through residential areas (and stop signs)

Apparently I'm not the only ASS who disapproved. I am a cautious driver. I've never driven back East.

Honestly Wiseone, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

That's pretty much all I said. So, thanks for the moral support:)

The point I'm trying to make is that its difficult to complain that he's doing something that other people can't do or that he's getting away with something when its something just about everyone does and frequently get away with.
