U.S. Plunges To 46th In World Press Freedom Index... Below Romania

It is the reason for the downward trend THIS year yes, but not for the ranking LAST year or the year before and so on. You dont start at nr. 1 ranking each year and then start taking out points depending on that years transgressions.

The US was up 15 spots last year, from the previous year. There was no downward trend.

Congrats on that! But you are down this year because of Snowdon and so on. Deal with it, and understand how the rankings worked. You where still no where near the top 20 let alone the top 10 last year.. and have not been for many years.. because of media ownership and arresting of sources and journalists. Hence this years slide is due to one thing, but the over all lowness of the ranking is due to many factors which you can read in previous reports.

Reporters Without Borders

We're not doing well in general for metrics of freedom and liberty. It's sad really, but too many revel in the tarnishing of our City on the Hill.

I'm glad to see you now agree with me and have abandoned all the BS reasons you were claiming earlier.

So this is how extreme liberals avoid being called out on their political hypocrisy? All while staying off topic that factually points out their beloved regime is a total failure on the topic?

Extreme liberals? Lol. Hardly. Lay off the trolling.

Gitmo still open, drone strikes on any country he pleases, assassinating Americans without trial, less press freedom....

Is this what most Americans who voted for Obama were expecting?

The big problem seems to be that the US press seems OK with this. They stopped doing their jobs for the most part anyway.

A classification based on personal bias and 3 incidents put us behind Jamaica...

Watchdog: Past 2 years 'atrocious' for journalists - News - JamaicaObserver.com

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A press freedom advocacy group said yesterday that the past two years have been "absolutely atrocious" for the killing and imprisonment of journalists.

At the launch of its annual report, Attacks on the Press, the Committee to Protect Journalists said wide-ranging government surveillance, the unchecked murder of journalists and indirect political and commercial pressures are major threats to press freedom.

Joel Simon, the New York-based committee's executive director, said 2013 saw "a near record" of 211 journalists imprisoned and 70 killed — slightly fewer than 2012, when 232 journalists were in jail and 72 were killed. That's tied with the highest death toll of the Iraq war.

We are 29 places behind this country people. 29 places. Again, I smell political bias. A country where the media is owned by a select few, journalists are regularly murdered and imprisoned is 29 places in front of us because of 3 incidents.

Their Jamaican Bobsled Team makes all the difference.

I just love it though. CalGun said I was an extremist liberal because I won't believe the claims of a group made up of liberals. :) Trolls have gotten more and more desperate lately.

You are an extremist...you're Very Liberal.

Labels become meaningless when Thorgasm is Very Conservative, Kushinator is Libertarian and you're anything but a right wing statist. ;)

Come on, rightwingers can't be statists.

I sure was, actually. I figured he just didn't know enough and/or was just trying to appeal to the ignorant naive demographic when campaigning. I would've been disappointed had he lamed out with regards to those topics, and it turned out I was right to vote for him.

When presenting facts that implement his beloved regime in a negative light he turns into a significant lack of relevance worthy of ignoring. I learned a long time ago extremist were dangerous and best ignored.

Come on, rightwingers can't be statists.

You struggling with the idea that fascists aren't right-wing, or that they aren't statists?

You should save your hack for a better thread.

I'll take that as no effing clue.

You don't even need to look to fascism for right-wing statism. When was the last time a Republican dismantled an arm of the state? Or reduced government spending, or controlled government debt? Conservatives are just as addicted to having their snouts in the trough as the liberals.

Nope! I think they were expecting better.

He's doing all those things the Reps loved GDubya for doing, and still they give him s***. There's no pleasing some people.

It's all relative. If you're backed up against your goal line, midfield looks a long way away. You are probably lined up around the opposite 30, so from his perspective, it's just all the same.

Now, just go out and join some nut job survivalist militia and all will be forgiven.......well, maybe.

Regarding the US, it has to do with this being a French organization taking up for Snowden and Assange, and even the traitor Manning.
That's flat-out CT. They're claiming that his sentence is the result of the suppression of whistle-blowers and not because he broke laws.

You're absolutely right. Freedom of the press does not allow for the release of secret government documents. If the US were to criticize France for charging someone under the same circumstances within their country they'd have a hissy. There is no reason to take what the French say seriously, but that does not mean there is not a problem in the Superpower.

While the US MSM is among the worst in the free world it's largely because of the self censorship, the lack of depth, little international reporting apart from photo and the seeming disinterest in hard news. When the antics of Justin Beiber are classed as New Flashes then it's clear what takes precedence. The British media is no better, btw.
