U.S. Plunges To 46th In World Press Freedom Index... Below Romania

You aren't one of those Mercatorphobes, are you?

Hardly, for a Brit it's the equivalent of looking at your junk in a crazy mirror. Our little peter looks enoooormous in comparison with how bitty a little diddy it really is.

That is the reason for the fall from last year.. but the US was already low due to other factors. Things like media ownership laws and actual number of owners, corporate influence on media and so on. And you cant deny that this aint a problem in the US.

That's all a bunch of BS. The US press is just as free as any in Europe. This is nothing more than a publicity stunt by the tiny French organization. They're using Snowden, Assange and Manning in attempt to gain publicity. Typical Euro sucking off the US for relevance.

C'mon Eco, I'm sure you can come up with something other than ad homs. Try again, you never know, third time lucky?

It's obvious. This little Euro organization is sucking off the US in attempt to gain publicity and support from the wackjobs that think treason against the US is free speech. They can eat a **** and die.

Culture shock...'sucking off' the US means the same as sucking up to the US. I don't think that's what they're doing. I reckon the whack-jobs are those who see the exposure of illegality and wrong-doing in the corridors of power as treason. You're such an authoritarian, Eco.

You're such an authoritarian, Eco.

Spare me the petty, and intellectually dishonest, insults. Not everyone wants to suck traitors dicks just because they acted against the US. The little Frency org doing so is just trying to get free publicity and support from scumbags that will support anything anti-US.

Go sell this report to the hairy backed fundies, I'm sure they can use it in the next episode of Farfur.

You are apparently in denial of the real world. It's a real world report. 46th, below Romania. Try to get something on your radio except Radio Free Africa. Drill a well for the locals and don't hump the natives, you know, that all American image needs to be unsullied. Maybe you can get the Vatican to give you a blessing on your news sources, that should help, don't you think?

anything in defense of the realm; you make the regime most happy with your constant capitulation....

I don't remember feeding trolls today. Where did you sprout from?

That is certainly a real problem, especially on our A.M. radio.

The real trick, however, is to take off the anti-American blinders long enough to compare ours against those countries that face similar terrorist threats or even just other countries in general.

And how about you take of the arrogant nationalistic blinders and do the same? Look at the top of the list and tell me what countries have put journalists in jail (yes the US has done that on GITMO), and where media ownership is exclusive to citizens only and media conglomerates are allowed to not only own a lot but clearly influence content and opinions of basic news programs?

What is bull**** is this nationalistic arrogance going on in the US. It blinds you all from the real truth that media organisations like MSNBC and Fox News, Newscorp and other media empires are a large part of the problem. Add to that the US government treatment of journalists and sources and your ranking is well deserved. There is nothing "free" about the US media landscape.. they are utterly biased and blind to anything happening outside the US.

Spare us, Pete. The article clearly states that Snowden, Assange and Manning are the reason. It flat-out panders to the nutbags who see treason against the US as a good thing. It's nothing more than gathering the Alex Jones fans in a desperate attempt at marketing.

The article itself engages in CT, claiming that Manning's sentence was about suppressing whistle-blowers and not the laws he broke.

It's clear as day to any non-biased observer.

Damn! A quandary. Both you and PeteEu have interesting points.

But Pete's claims are not backed up by the article. Mine are.

From the article:

The whistleblower is the enemy. Hence the 35-year jail term imposed on Private Chelsea/Bradley Manning for being the big WikiLeaks source

That's flat-out CT.

One cannot deny that the article is, in fact, engaged in CT.

Obama's America. Spying on the media. Put the IRS on anyone who is critical. Obtained to himself the ability to have anyone secretly imprisoned or assassinated. Ban adverse media from press conferences and the White House. Make everything a classified secret. There is nothing "liberal" about Obama. He is an authoritarian, not a liberal.

Judging from what he has done while President, I would say he is a fascist authoritarian.

Singapore is among bottom - 150. To hell with press freedom. You don't need press freedom for political stability, economic growth etc.

The hell with Singapore. Any country that will cane you for chewing gum in public can burn.

When your justice system is deeply flawed no amount of chewing gum can mend it.

America's justice system sucks but it's a hell of a lot better than Singapore's. I would rather live in Nigeria than Singapore.

Singapore is a crowded, dirty, authoritarian craphole. It's like a bunch of mice stacked up in cages and crapping on each other. Nice production though, I'll give a factory farm that.

So this is how extreme liberals avoid being called out on their political hypocrisy? All while staying off topic that factually points out their beloved regime is a total failure on the topic?

It has to do with their methodology. We really do lack in some of these:

o Pluralism [indicator Plu]
 Mesure le degré de représentation des opinions dans l’espace médiatique
o Media independance [indicator Ind]
 Measures the degree to which the media are able to function independently
authorities
o Environment and self-censorship [indicator EnA]
 Analyses the environment in which journalists work
o Legislative framework [indicator CaL]
 Analyses the quality of the legislative framework and measures its effectiveness
o Transparency [indicator Tra]
 Measures the transparency of the institutions and procedures that affect the production
of news and information
o Infrastructure [indicateur Inf]
 Measures the quality of the infrastructure that supports the production of news and
information

In my opinion. . . .

The fact is that the anti-establishment, anti-traditional values, zone out, drop out, Hippies of the 60's outgrew that stage and rejoined the working world, but they formed the base of modern American liberalism/progressivism/statism/political class/leftism. And because they were convinced they could do it better and be better people than the generations before them, a whole lot of them went into education, politics, and media. And they naturally mentored people of like mind who would eventually replace them. And because the replacements had no experience with what America was like before progressivism, they became increasingly fanatical in their beliefs.

And now in the world of education, of science, of media, and increasingly in politics, modern American conservatism/libertarianism/classical liberalism is increasingly unwelcome and generally doesn't survive comfortably in those environments. This has the effect of significantly suppressing information and makes education, media, and a large chunk of the scientific community willing accomplices to support an increasingly liberal government.

And we the people have largely lost our 'free and objective press' as a result.

It is the reason for the downward trend THIS year yes, but not for the ranking LAST year or the year before and so on. You dont start at nr. 1 ranking each year and then start taking out points depending on that years transgressions.
