1 in 4 Americans unaware that Earth circles Sun

I just went outside and the sun has disappeared. Am I the only one who noticed this?

It was hanging around when I drove to work.

It usually isn't around when I leave though. I suspect it works a day-shift schedule.

So you're claiming that took a big ball of burning gas and moved it. This isn't funny. If you have it, please return it. I was using it. My work is vital.

Forces beyond my control are constantly moving that **** around. I can't do anything for your issue, I'm afraid.

I call bull****.I think the people answering the survey were just ****ing with the survey takers.

You ever see some of these sackheads running around? They couldn't find their collective asses with both hands.

Actually, I was being facetious about the Sun orbiting the earth and the resulting creation of days and nights. I am actually aware that the earth rotates on its axis every day and orbits the sun in the course of a year. So, I deliberately "misspoke".

A lesser person might have used this to ridicule me. So, I wanted to acknowledge your classy way of letting me off the hook, by trying to correct me without trying to embarrass me.

Respect,
Specklebang

Ok, my bad, didnt notice the tone. Its one of those common mistakes though. Just close enough to make sense :). Like when people say the 'dark side of the moon' when they mean the far side.

Dumbing down of our schools in the basics. We teach to the lowest student instead of trying to bring the class up to the highest student. 65% back when i went to school would be failing. 70% was the lowest passing grade. And to think, these people vote.

Still, Earth going around the Sun is....pretty basic.

Okay, I'm going to be an educated bitch now. In fact the earth does not "circle" the sun, it "orbits" around the sun, it might even "revolve" around the sun, but it isn't a "circle" and unfortunately in today's education-less level, it might give some the idea that orbits are circular, which they effectively are not.

The earth's orbit around the sun is nearly circular(3.3% variation)

On the plus side, 34% of Europeans also think the sun orbits the Earth.

That it is. It may be more on the retentive skills or perhaps on the will to learn. There are a lot of kids these days that go to school only because they have to, they are not at all interested in learning.

Thats my thought as well. Kids simply arent listening, and schools are letting them graduate anyway.

Exactly, schools these days are more worried about self esteem and feelings than learning. Show up and graduate, learning not mandatory.

That has ALWAYS been true. I know I didn't really care that much, if I did I would have gotten straight As. I was content to coast by with Bs and Cs.

Regardless, this fact seems to be like a "2+2=4" thing. It's like the first thing you learn about space, it's not Steven Hawking level stuff. We should change around some songs a bit, maybe that would do it "Twinkle Twinkle little star, the Sun is a star that the Earth goes around" or something.

Even if they think it's circular, that would be a big improvement.

Of course. its ultimately the parents fault. They are primarily responsible for raising their children, not society. They let the schools get away with it.

You would think. Back in my day if a kid didn't learn, they kept them in the same grade as long as it took to achieve what that grade was suppose to teach them. No asking of parents if they could or worrying about personal self esteem. It was worrying about what the kid learned or didn't. I don't know what happened, knowing the earth revolves around the sun was pretty much 6th grade science if not before.

It was. It probably still is, but perhaps a lot more parents are satisfied to let schools be their day time baby sitter, even after school hours. But you are correct, the ultimate responsibility is the parents.

Darlin' you're never in trouble. I was commenting on the OP title.

Perhaps the OP title was edited by one of the 25% since the lead sentence and other references in the article use the word revolve in place of circle. ;)

6th grade? What were you in the "special" class

Seriously, it's way before that. Learn not to poop your diapers, learn your ABCs, learn that the earth goes around the sun....I wonder out of this 25% how many haven't quite mastered "going potty."
