Ted Cruz: 60 votes or else on debt ceiling

If Cruz wants to create another shutdown then more power to him. That's what his constituents want.

That's fine. First thing to be cut can be Ted Cruz's paycheck. Or to be fair, we'll just cut off all of Congress.

That's what I wish would happen if they don't come up with a yearly budget.

So let me get this straight. If I max my credit cards and the credit card company doesn't raise my limit, I'm a deadbeat because I won't have money to pay the bills. However, if the credit card company raises my limit and I use it to pay my bills, that is responsible?

I can see where you're coming from but trying to discuss the issue within this framework is troublesome.

The finances of a nation and the finances of a family are two very, very different things and in the same way as when the kitchen table analogy comes up, I have to say it's just not helpful.

The US has one of the most diverse and complex economies in the world and regardless of what the far right wing may think the economy is as dependent on government decisions as the government is dependent on the private sector to spur growth and provide it with a tax base.

I understand people are upset about spending, it is mental BUT slapdash decisions like unilaterally stopping the raising of the debt ceiling would **** everything so hard it'll make 2008 seems like a blip on the radar.

I'm well aware of the complexities and that it isn't equal, however the concept is still valid. The spending is out of control and the accountability is crap.

The problem is there is NEVER a good time to bring up reduced spending with the party in power. The only time the party in power (This has been decades in the making) ever takes time to listen is when they are forced to. Otherwise it just gets ignored.

No, deadbeats don't pay their bills when they come due.

That too! Of course if you didn't have the earlier deadbeat that's borrowing more than can be paid back, you wouldn't be concerned with the latter.

Every time spending cuts are brought up, they are always aimed at government programs, programs that are intended to help people.

You righties are funny. You seem to worry about debt only when Democrats has the white house. And just to be fair it is the same with democrats.

Black and white (well, red and blue) as that is, the partisan supporter cannot see it!

And that is the flaw in the GOP. The programs don't need to be cut, but they need heavy reforms and accountability to them. There is so much waste and fraud in these and even the military programs.

The biggest problem is not tackling it, it's political will.

These kinds of things take a 10-15 year coherent plan to get under control and begin to pay back.

But there's no political points to be scored in such an arrangement, therefore it doesn't get done, just lip service done to solutions that sound good to certain blocs of voters but will never get passed by Congress and which will do more harm than good even if it did.

Since no congress is ever tied to the policies of a past congress, that type of plan is nearly impossible. Therefore, you have either constant increased debt or something needs to happen. Given the rate of the debt increases, I think something needs to be done now.

I can understand the frustration man, but kneejerk solutions will only make things worse at this moment in time.

Considering the fact that it took 200 years to accumulate a trillion dollars of debt, and then shockingly it took off skywards around 1980, whatever we started to do then needs to be reversed. Reagan tripled what he received, Bush 2 doubled what he received and Obama looks like he will be presiding over another doubling. So why wouldn't we expect the next administration to add 50 or 100% to it again. By then it will be 30-40 trillion. What number makes us grab our throats and yell enough already? 100 trillion, 500 trillion?

Now that is something I can go along with. A lot of these programs need to be restructured or "fat need to be trimmed". But the current GOP is trying to get rid of these programs all together and I can't jump on board with that. Also Defense spending has to be place on the table along with these subsidies that we are giving oil companies.

When both parties are willing to place all their sacred cows on the table, then we can have serious debt reduction.

Ok. I don't know what you consider knee jerk, but at some point and time the answer to raising the debt ceiling will be NO! However kicking the can down the road is prolonging an inevitable worse situation then the hard decision we are faced with annually, with regards to debt ceiling.

Comparing the United States federal government to your credit card bill is hilariously stupid.

Shut it down... continually.. until people realize that having it shut down is not a good thing AND that, in and of itself, is a reason to decrease the power that the branch holds.

Thinking we can just continue the spending we are doing now is more idiotic.

Nobody has proposed that.

Of course noone "proposes" it, however, they keep the congress critters in there that DO continue it.

While I won't say he's on the brink of irrelevancy I do think Cruz needs to sit this one out. There's a fine line between standing on principle and being a pest. The jackals who control both parties are gonna do as they please. Just have to wait til Nov to see if the cavalry will arrive...Best to bunker down, take cover, and pick battles that you know you'll win...

Thats what i was getting at. As far as it goes the vast majority of Texans are going to vote for this nut case. Battleground Texas is mainly focusing on the Governor race and some districts they think they can get now and slowly pick away later.

Heh, love it when the nut cases on the left hates someone on the right, it means they're representing the people who voted for them.

Works both ways, when the nut cases on the right complain about Pelosi, Reid, and Obama than I guess according to you it means THEY are representing the people that voted for them.

That's right it does and they are.

Paying your bills with debt is not paying your bills when they come due. That's just kicking it down the road.

At some point, we will be deadbeats. This cannot go on forever.

Sound advice.
Aside from giving federal employees a two week paid vacation, what did the last debt ceiling fight accomplish?
