Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu[W:250]

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

Catfish, collard greens and grits. Don't forget the sweet potatoe pie and Koolade. ;)

Yummy!

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

sauerkraut origin is German

Fried Chicken and watermelon origin is not Black America

It is just like hispanics being offended when Americans call nachos mexican food.

Why would a hispanic be ofended if nachos are called mexican food?

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

It's okay to joke about Germans and sauerkraut, but if we mention black cultural foods which happens to be true.....bad stuff. Are we going to argue that this isn't part of black culture in the US? What's wrong with those foods anyway? I grew up in Virginia, and like them all. I have a deep German heritage, and I like sauerkraut. People go to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and get sauerkraut on the German part of the park................have we seen Germans riot over it? No, not since the park opened.

The offended people need STFU!

It wasn't even a joke. They were simply celebrating African American culture by featuring Black cultural cuisine during Black History Month.

:blah: You miss all the joys of wearing a fur coat while cleaning the house! :2dance: .. :lamo:

I was talking to a good friend in Philly the other day. He said he and wife have been avoiding going to the store because of the bad weather and ice. So they've been working their way through the pantry, discovering old cans of this and that had worked their way to the dark depths of the cupboards. Apparently canned fish, and old stale oyster crackers don't work well together...

You are a hardy bunch back there.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

Sergio Garcia, with his quip at Tiger Woods, a cheap shot a while back.
That's got to be the funniest thing I've read in quite some time. Watermelon, corn bread, and fried chicken to celebrate black history! I wonder what nimrod thought that would be a good idea?
If I pull off the skin, that's a great meal for me.
Broasted chicken is a favorite with all folks in my North Central Illinois area .

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

I see. So to avoid offending any hyper sensitivities, every item on your list must be avoided/banned. No reason to risk stereotyping.

Chicken and a slice of watermelon isn't racist in and of itself. But when people talk about black people loving chicken and watermelon, they're talking about a lot more than food. They're talking about a stereotype with a lot of racist history. History still embraced by some of the worst people on the internet.

For Example:

History is important. Any Black History Month celebration that ignores the experiences and portrayals of black people in this country is shallow at best.

If you want to acknowledge black history this month, learn it.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

If a white person wears "African garb" they usually look like a ridiculous douchebag. The blowback for that is deserved.

Don't let that stop your persecution complex.

Actually fifth generation Black Americans look pretty silly in African garb too.

Because it is not. Try to go to mexico and go to a real mexican food restaurant and order nachos

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

Damn!

I guess that means there will be no "fabulous window treatment day" for gay appreciation week, either.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

So what could the cafeteria serve that wouldn't offend anyone, yet recognize the spirit of the "event"?

Black people (including myself) want non-blacks to join in the celebrating of MLK Day and BHM and when they do they get labeled racially insensitive. That's just wrong. I'll tell you what it is. Black people are often ashamed of our culture. I can understand being humiliated by be associated with gangster rap, bad grammar so-called Ebonics and dressing like a thug. We should be honored by non-blacks wanting to enjoy black cultural cuisine, Jazz, Gospel music, etc. in celebration of BHM.

I live in Mexico and my son wants "Los Nachos" as his lunch every day. They are extremely popular here.

I guess the poster, that ties cuisine with looking like a savage and other imagery might have something to do with it.

are you saying fried chicken isn't considered soul food?

That's not racist, they're criticizing Obama's policies....

True, but not just white people.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

I prefer home fried potatoes, smothered and covered, to grits but that menu was fairly common when I lived in Brandywine, MD which was a mostly (70+%) black area. I am not sure how much that menu varies from other typical southern state fair or even if black folks had any real influence on it but when a place advertised "soul food" these items were typical.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

I'm really starting to get sick and tired of all this outrage over "racist" events.

Every March we all dress in green, wear shamrocks, eat corned beef and cabbage and dye our beer green. People ENJOY it.

In May we eat Mexican food and drink margaritas. People ENJOY it.

How much longer do we have to suffer through this "outrage" before we can start celebrating Black history with soul food and Jazz?

I understand the history, and the projection. And I also understand the hyper-sensitive, and the agenda of the PC crowd. If you don't, I'd suggest you learn it.

To be honest, Africans don't consider us African Americans. They just call us just Americans.

Don't get me wrong. I honestly believe whoever it was that try to put this together were trying to do this with a good heart. My thinking is if they don't know the history of the culture, you might want to consult someone of that culture for some advice.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

They could make up for this public relations disaster by simply following it up with White History Lunch, in which white people appropriate ethnic food and make it really, really bland.

French Fries. They're French, right?
