Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu[W:250]

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

This should offend all equally: Chapter 18

Well, I can't possibly see how wingless dried termites on the menu would cause concern for anyone. It's documented, and culturally acurate...

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

LOL, I was the only white person working in a black owned company once and for Juneteenth, they brought in ribs and watermelon for lunch. Although its fine when they do it, its insulting when whites do it.

I can think of other black traditions that don't easily cross race lines. For instance, if a white person wears African garb to a BHM ceremony, you're gonna get some blowback.

White ants are very popular in the east AFrican interior. No kidding. I passed on the opportunity to enjoy them. But only because I'm white.

If a white person wears "African garb" they usually look like a ridiculous douchebag. The blowback for that is deserved.

Don't let that stop your persecution complex.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

So what could the cafeteria serve that wouldn't offend anyone, yet recognize the spirit of the "event"?

Why is the cafeteria recognizing the "spirit of the event" anyway? Yeah, it's stupid, that's the point. Who says "We should honor black heritage, what should we put on the menu?" And even if you do that, nobody saw "fried chicken and watermelon" and thought maybe it wasn't such a great idea?

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

Haha, I'm not sure how people fall into these little predicaments.

It goes against every grain of common sense.

Obviously spaghetti.

On a serious note, not aligning the food with the festivities would have been a better idea.

Southern food is fantastic, don't hate.

Not aligning the food? Well, in this day and age, I guess that would be the case. Can't risk offending the offensive.

Perhaps the central committee could determine an approved generic food menu that eliminates any regional/ethic basis from nutritional offerings. That menu could become the legal standard for all public/private school food offerings, and eliminate any controversy.

EBT cards? ;)

It's Black History month and the school is celebrating this time. The first thing on the list is to not offend black people, it's not up for debate, it's common sense. Choose to be difficult about this if you want. The reality of the matter is quite simple.

You have to understand. The reason it is offensive is because the food they have suggested came from a stereotype. When celebrating black history month, you have to take into consideration multi-regional cuisines

African
Carribean
southern
etc

Even with American, those food listed is not primary soul food

Here is a basic list

Oven baked chicken
mac and cheese
smothered pork chops
greens
black eye peas
butter beans
Salmon Croquettes
Fried Cabbage
Fried Corn
Short Ribs
pecan pie
sock-it-to-me cake
7 up cake
pecan pie
black berry cobbler
neck bones
ham hocks

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

It's okay to joke about Germans and sauerkraut, but if we mention black cultural foods which happens to be true.....bad stuff. Are we going to argue that this isn't part of black culture in the US? What's wrong with those foods anyway? I grew up in Virginia, and like them all. I have a deep German heritage, and I like sauerkraut. People go to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and get sauerkraut on the German part of the park................have we seen Germans riot over it? No, not since the park opened.

The offended people need STFU!

sauerkraut origin is German

Fried Chicken and watermelon origin is not Black America

It is just like hispanics being offended when Americans call nachos mexican food.

That is just southerners crappy idea of food.

Anyone who thinks souther food is crappy obviously doesn't have taste buds...or is lying to themselves because they are just bitter against the south.

Unfortunately you are correct. One of the foul results of PC run amok.

The examples listed are crappy. Not all southern food is crappy.

Where I live blacks and whites eat near about the same food. Maybe just a little different. But all "heart healthy" friend foods and such lol.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

So can anyone come up with a few dishes that would celebrate black history month that are NOT stereotypical and offensive that kids will actually eat?

I didn't choose to be difficult, the offended did. Anyway, you are correct, the reality is quite simple, and speaks volumes.

That's all racist food there. I'm thinking some small filet mignon's with baby red potatoes and peas with mint would be a hit. How about fresh, lightly curried trout with seasoned rice and fresh asparagus? A light mousse for desert. Maybe some Champipple to drink. All right, I blew it with the Champipple - it's Ginger Ale and Ripple. But if we're going to feed the kiddies something they might all like for Black History Month, why not go whole hog instead of just the hocks?

I see. So to avoid offending any hyper sensitivities, every item on your list must be avoided/banned. No reason to risk stereotyping.
