Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu[W:250]

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

You find that the families who were critical of this lunch are melodramatic. I see you are attempting to outdo the perceived melodramatics with histrionics of your own. All that was needed was to not promote it as a "Black History Month lunch."

I'd like to know your target for the previous position so as to determine how to respond to this. It did not quite make sense to me.

You are perceptive. I am applying histrionics to the absudity of the melodramatics.

As to the target, the fact is, the syllabus in todays classrooms is far different than what it seems you are suggesting. Minorities, gender, and identity hardly recieve the short shrift you appear to be suggesting.

I moved in grade 6 and never saw him again - he was pretty healthy, from what I remember - cast iron stomach too.

And good afternoon Lady P - haven't seen you online much lately - hope all is well - we got about a foot of snow Tuesday - hope it passed you by.

Greetings, CJ. :2wave:

Oh, we got the snow all right! I am becoming convinced that there is a "snow magnet" hidden somewhere in NE Ohio...either that or Mother Nature just loves Lake Erie, and visits as often as she can!

I had one business trip earlier this week, but I have been posting away the rest of the time. Maybe we've been on different threads, cause I've wondered where you were, too! This place is huge! :afraid: :scared:

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

Why do we need a "meal" for it in the first place?

As I said, peanut butter sandwiches would honor George Washington Carver, which would be a good way to celebrate the contributions of black people to our society, don't you think?

My thought exactly. From Wikipedia:

Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month in America, is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora.

In that light, fried chicken and watermelon as a black history themed lunch sounds like more of a joke than anything (albeit not a very good one).

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

So long as you perpetuate such nonsense over nothing but food, racism will thrive and multiply more each generation.

Somehow, we've constructed society in such a way that you can tease and stereotype darn near anything and everybody.....except black people. That is the most racist thing going in America.

That's because darn near anything and everybody.....except black people... escaped being slaves and being thought of as less than human.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

Actually, "Europe's perspective" would be exactly what I call Eurocentric by definition.

The very fact that America "was discovered" is from a European point of view. Why should our history be told by Europeans?

Because we as a society are a branch and offshoot of European culture ... Also, the European academic tradition is probably more expansive and self-critical than any other perspective out there. Most others, if not all, fully indulge in a self-centric narrative

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

There's a difference between watermelon an d fried chicken as "ethnic" foods, and such things as tamales, haggis, or saurkraut. The obvious difference is that the latter are actually national dishes in real countries. The so called "black" ethnic foods are associated not with a country, but with slavery. Just what is the country of the African Americans in the United States anyway? Unless they immigrated from Africa, they're Americans and have no other country in their heritage, or at least in their known heritage. That's why it wouldn't be offensive to serve a lunch of tamales and enchiladas on Cinco de Mayo, but really is offensive to serve up a stereotype on MLK day.

So soul food celebrates slavery, as opposed to the culture developed within the african american community? Also, I am lost on the idea of ethnic foods having to be tied to a national entity.

Re: Calif. school apologizes for black history lunch menu

They should have done chicken and waffles

I think the perception of the meal would have been a lot different with just the absence of watermelon. There is just a **** ton of negative imagery associated with African Americans and watermelon. And while that is true to a certain degree with fried chicken, fried chicken is a legitimate part of soul food and doesn't carry the degree of negative association that watermelon has

Very very interesting. I don't remember Barak or Michelle being to upset when the liberal elite Washington, D.C., school where the President's daughters are students were served Japanese food for lunch in celebration of Pearl Harbor Day.

George Washington carver: the token black of american history classes. In any other context, I doubt you would here much about the guy in a general history class.

Personally,I always thought the independence struggle and political development of Haiti and Liberia; greater focus on Frederick Douglas; covering Ralph Ellison, W.E.B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey or the the Emmett Till case would all be better contributions to one's education on black america than the peanut guy

I am curious....how many of the parents of the kids at Sidwell Friends are bonafide liberals?

actually that seems a pretty legitimate complaint and about as mung headed as the complaint in the OP here

Just not feeling the issue with either.

Is something wrong with chicken and watermelon? Where is the damned biscuit - the major issue. ;)

Same thing with Sidwell, what the hell is wrong with Japanese food? Is eating sushi somehow saying you respect the kamikazis and Pearl Harbor attacks?

Not saying either were stellar ideas - just not seeing the damage - unless they undercooked the chicken or left the raw fish sitting out too long.

I can't find the original Washington Post article, but I did manage to track down (I think) the menu for the day.

Asian Mushroom Soup
Oriental Noodle Salad
Classic Spinach Salad
Teriyaki Marinated Chicken Strips
Szechuan Tofu & Veggies
Garlic Roasted Edamame
Vegetable Fried Rice
Fortune Cookies

Conservatives Criticize Pearl Harbor Day Asian Lunch Menu At Obama Children's School

Oh yeah, Asian Mushroom Soup and Oriental Noodle Salad. Those are favorites in, uh...Asia.

You have two decidedly Japanese dishes (edamame and teriyaki), but that's it. Everything else is universally found throughout most of Asia, except for the fortune cookies which were invented here in the United States. I hate to use this expression, but um...*cough*...faux outrage.

You also have to love how the Fox article goes from "Japanese Inspired Lunch Menu" in the headline to "Asian themed menu" in the article.

When this story first broke back in December of 2011, the same question was asked on the former Politico forum.
The conclusion, a lot of liberal elitist send their children to Sidwell Friends School. You don't think they're going to send their children to a public school run by teacher unions do you ?

If there was a link to the particular Politico thread, I would post it. But those idiots over at the Politico said that they were going to remove all of the Politico forum's archives from the internet. And that's exactly what they did even though many members of the Politico community protested.

But maybe one of the Politico refuges on the DP can concur ?

Moderator's Warning:
Noticed a few people are treading the b/f/t rule really closely here. I'd suggest ya knock it off. You know who you are......

I remember looking at that menu back in 2011. Looks more like the menu from the Chinese fast food joint you find at your local strip mall.

And we know that back in the late 1970's the liberals PC Words Police had declared the word "Oriental" to be racist and politically incorrect.
Oriental Noodles is racist, it's now Asian Noodles.

Originally there was a photo that showed the entrance of the schools cafeteria that showed a big sign that said "Pearl Harbor Day" and then right below was the menu. I think that's what set many off.

Maybe I'll search for the photo. It gives one a better perspective what all the bitching was about.

if it's a menu they just happened to have the same day that isn't much of an issue. In the OP the menu was specifically put together as part of BHM

Do black Americans have some special claim on fried chicken or watermelons ?

Are whites forbidden to eat fried chicken and watermelon during the month of February ?

Why do Mexican demand tacos on May 5th ?

If you eat corned beef and cabbage on St. Patricks Day, does that mean you're anti Irish and xenophobic ?

If you drink beer during the month of October does that mean you're a neo-nazi ?

This thread has made me hungry. If I weren't so far from a hood, I would drive to the nearest Chuches Fried Chicken and get a bucket the thighs and legs.

I an't going to take no chances. Not going to drive sixty miles to the hood and be asked at the counter if I'm a racist for ordering fried chicken during Black Heritage Month.

BTW: Where did they find the watermelons ? They aren't in season.
