Blind’ Man Caught in Disability Fraud After Seen Driving a Speed Boat

well disability is also about if the *person* can work again. And if you have some highschool dropout who can't perform manual labor or even stand for long periods, it's unlikely you're going to find that person an office job (assuming an available one even existed)

So it's a bit more complicated than many people want to admit

It is, and the standard varies from place to place and doctor to doctor and patient to patient. I have a lot of empathy for a 50 or 60 year old who can't perform a lifelong vocation anymore, qualifies for other jobs, but can't locate any at all. That person is truly stuck and is probably clinically depressed, as well.

I know, I bet everyone of us here know at least 5 people that are questionable if we are honest with ourselves.

I know a couple--former friends of my wife, thanks to me--who love together; she's collecting welfare and tons of child support, all the while he makes six-figures Since they're not married, it's perfectly legal.

It's a travesty that she's not in jail, by now.

I've tried to report such fraud a few times. Never got much of a response, and the person i reported to seemed pretty disinterested

Fewer welfare recipients means fewer workers at the welfare office. Welfare recipients are job security.

There probably aren't enough federal workers to investigate claims. You know, some folks have repeatedly called them lazy or leeches etc. Calling for the elimination of federal employees etc.

Am guessing there are always investigations going on. But that they are expensive, time consuming, and difficult to prosecute. Which limits how many can be pursued at any given time. Our laws and legal system have gotten so complex i suspect it is a nightmare taking one of these cases to court....

Yeah, at the same time I've seen lots of cases where I felt fraud should be more vigorously investigated and the standards tightened up. It's one of those weird political issues where both sides have valid points, but are so ideologically entrenched, any reasonable middle is hard to achieve

I agree. It's impossible to know what pain another experiences. Very hard call to make there. It's also very difficult to simply look at someone and determine that they aren't disabled - not all disabilities are physical, and many physical disabilities are not necessarily something one might notice except under certain circumstances. Generally speaking, if a person knows disability fraud is occurring, much information is required in order to pursue it, and the person reporting may be required to offer as much evidence as possible in advance. Depending on the nature of the fraud, the reporter may be required to offer personal information as well. That's probably a huge deterrent, but I can understand it's necessity. IOW, if one wants to report disability fraud, better be as certain as possible and committed to following through.
