'2016: Obama's America' Filmmaker Indicted for Violating Campaign Finance Laws - The Hollywood Reporter

Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, whose documentary 2016: Obama's America took a critical look at President Barack Obama and was a surprise hit in 2012, will be arrested in New York on Friday for allegedly violating campaign-finance laws, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Federal authorities accuse D'Souza of donating more than is legal to the campaign of Wendy Long, who ran in 2012 for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton but lost to now-Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Long, though, is not mentioned in an indictment obtained by THR on Thursday.

Insiders say D'Souza has been friends with Long since they attended Dartmouth College together in the early 1980s. According to the indictment, D'Souza donated $20,000 to Long's campaign by aggregating the money from various people and falsely reporting the source of the funds. But Gerald Molen, a co-producer of 2016, says the charge is politically motivated.

Mornin AM. :2wave: He should have known that the Progressives and Democrats would be coming for him on anything he has been connected to. Anything that can paint him into a bad light.

He probably did.

He shouldn't have broken the law, which seems like he knowingly did, given the method he chose to do the donations.

I like how you immediately jump to a conspiracy theory without any information or facts to support this theory. How is it you can still stand up straight after twisting and turning so hard, craning your neck into such awkward and uncomfortable positions to avoid admitting what shouldn't be a hard truth at all, I mean its not like you've got a personal investment in this guy sure he doesn't like Obama and you don't like Obama either but it is too much to admit that some people who dislike Obama also may commit crimes or may generally just not be good or honest people?

Also anyone who watched his "documentary" and actually felt informed by the trash this "journalist" put together should be ashamed of themselves. That's big air quotes too, Chris Farley style.

Perhaps he shouldn't have broken the law.

No you don't understand because he dislikes Obama like me I feel I'm obligated for some reason to defend him no matter what happens, twist and rationalize whatever condemning information is given to me to explain it away to remove any blame from this man.

Clearly, because he like me is anti-Obama, he is simply the victim of a witch hunt. Since, as we know, people who are anti-Obama are pure as the driven snow.

In your mind this piece of dirt is better?

No, he's no different except he panders to a different crowd.

Where were you going by asking me that?

It's the False Equivalency Cha-Cha. When you can't defend your guy, simply bring up someone from the opposite side who's somewhat analogous, declare victory, exit thread.

Say what Wiseone, no one jumped to a conspiracy therory.....you sure don't know much about Politics at all. No matter how many times you get schooled. Do you even know what it is to think politically.....did you figure out that part about this guys Movie and when it came out and how when it took Obama down in the Polls. Did you figure out his part with the Heritage Foundation. Still can't connect the dots I see. Don't worry.....one day the light will go off and all will be Right.

Maybe its the ridiculous amounts of alcohol I've consumed tonight but hey man offering a theory about political reprisal or whatever the hell you got without evidence or facts to back it is the definition of the conspiracy theory. If you can present some data to support your claim by all means do so until then don't pretend its nothing more than some fantasy you made up on the spot. You know connect the dots for me man.

Yeah it must be.....if you thought this was the first time they went after him. I'll make sure when I got it all in Order I am back here to like bring it front and center to you. Oh and I will bring it to you.....that's a fact. You can bank on that.....with all that so called learning you missed out on.....and still can't get **** Right.

I don't know why people are pre-emptively defending this guy. It's possible he did break the law. Considering his unethical behavior in the past.

No, it didn't.

2016: Obama's America was released on Aug. 24, 2012.

On Aug. 21, 2012, Obama's approval rating (as per Rasmussen) was 49%. On Aug. 27, it was 50%. It would hover between 48-50 throughout the month of September.

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll - Rasmussen Reports™

His approval as per Gallup was 47% the week before the "documentary" was released; it remained within a point either way through September.

His RCP poll average (the average of all the polls) had him around 48% at the time of the release, and between 47 and 49 percent for the entire month of September (except for a brief flirtation with 50%).

Any effect on Obama's polling caused by that "documentary" was statistically insignificant to the point of nonexistent. Or, in other words, you simply made that up.

How Dinesh D'Souza's Indictment Became 'Proof' of Obama's Conservative Inquisition

>" Dinesh D'Souza's indictment on charges of illegal campaign donations seemed to confirm, for some conservative activists, what they've believed all along: That the "ongoing persecution of Republicans and Conservatives mirrors the attacks by the fascists of Europe on their opponents in the 1930s," as Pamela Geller wrote in a blog post on Thursday night, framing D'Souza's indictment as one of many "attacks" against conservative groups in the U.S. Although D'Souza, a Christian conservative author, has fallen a bit out of favor with the mainstream conservative moment in recent years, he's still a beloved Obama critic in some circles. Here was Drudge's quick-fire response to the indictment:

And a later, follow-up observation:

Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, of course, was charged earlier this week in a long-running investigation into whether his acceptance of expensive gifts and loans from a wealthy donor broke any laws. Another conservative blogger, who writes under the name Ace of Spades, gave a list of other "coincidences:"

Coincidence: Hollywood's only conservative group is getting close IRS nonprofit scrutiny Another Coincidence: James O'Keefe Group Being Audited by NY. Again. Yet Another Coincidence: Dinesh D'Souza Indicted For Election Fraud Still Another Coincidence: IRS Proposes New 501(c)(4) Rules That Just Happen to Cover Most Tea Party Groups Judge Strikes Down Wisconsin's 'John Doe' Subpoenas "If you want to see what American fascism would look like," Ace adds, "this is it." And this is a line of thinking that D'Souza himself is promoting.

Right as the Department of Justice released the indictment against D'Souza, he tweeted, "IRS targets Hollywood Conservatives — wasn't this supposed to stop?" He's referring to the IRS's scrutiny of "Friends of Abe," a conservative group of Hollywood types.

When The New York Times picked up on the investigation earlier this week, some, including Herman Cain, accused the IRS of trying to silence conservative Hollywood celebrities in the lead-up to the 2012 presidential elections. D'Souza's only other tweet so far on his indictment linked to a Hollywood Reporter interview with Gerald Molen, a co-producer for his recent film, 2016: Obama's America. Molen also believes that the charges are the result of political targeting:..."<

Kind of like liberals always claiming Bush did it whenever anyone is critical of Obama, right?
