NSA Fallout - Canada selling itself as haven for US tech giants

Unless we develop new hardware without backdoors, stronger encryptions and no remote access to location services or cameras/mics the NSA will forever be our big brother.

Amber Lyons said outside of this country, no one will talk to a journalist if they have an iPhone or any device without a removable battery. They refuse to be spied on.

Hey, that's pretty cool.

You think the NSA can't get that ****? They'll get it.

Of course they can. However as it is right now if they are spying on an American and get caught they're legally okay. However, if they're spying on Canadians and get caught, that's not legal and an international incident. Considering Canada is our number 2 top supplier of oil, that could be a big deal. There are plenty of other buyers in the world.

Sorry, I didn't mean to direct that comment towards you. More towards the article that CanadaJohn posted.
I like pointing my finger at a beaver.

Except the fourth amendment makes that very much not ok.

There is no need for Canada to sell anything. Silicon Valley is fleeing.

LOL!

No, don't for a second think that I condone the faulty reasoning that has led this nation to where we are.

All I'm saying is, is it not clear that our government could give two ****s about the laws of other nations? I mean, I thought it was clear...but I guess it's possible others don't.

Your government, particularly your current President, clearly has no respect for American law and perhaps not other nations' laws, however, unless Obama is planning an invasion someday soon, Canadian law still dictates what happens within our own borders.

I posted a link to Clinton's comments. I didn't mistake anyone for anyone else. Clinton was a Senator in a neighbouring State to Canada - far more relevant, in my view.

You made it seem like she was the only person to make that link.

You really believe it'll do them any good? They're safer here, out of country they are open to any kind of spying the NSA wants. They have acres of the most powerful computers in the world, there is no where to hide.

I have to disagree. While they may not be safe anywhere as it stands, at least they can't be forced to co-operate. American companies get court ordered to let the NSA tap into their infrastructure and get direct access to their data. If they were in Canada, for instance, the NSA wouldn't necessarily have a direct tap onto their servers, but rather would have to monitor things going in and out, which would make it a lot harder on them.

Either way, companies need to start packing up and moving out, because that's the only thing that's going to get anyone's attention. Our government has made it quite clear they could give a **** less what the citizenry wants.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some companies flee our oppressive government and head to Canada. The NSA needs to take a chill pill.

Just as we in NV take businesses out of CA. Actions have consequences. Someone loses and someone wins.

How are Canadian taxes in comparison with US taxes? Real question.

The Heritage Foundation using several factors measures the economic freedom of countries every year. The United States which once was #1 has fallen drastically in the past few years to #10. Our friends to the North, Canada has moved into the #6 slot.

No, actually, in your need to protect Hillary Clinton, you made that link. I simply made a joke, one based on fact, that you took offense to because it slagged the Queen of all liberals. I could have named any number of misguided, ignorant, self-important American political buffoons - I chose Hillary. Get over it.

The NSA is one of the largest employers of PhD mathematicians. They'll get what they want in the end.

We've already been caught spying on other nations, they ain't gonna do **** and the NSA is not going to stop.

Isn't it funny. I thought you picked Clinton to **** on because she is a favourite punching bag for all mislead and ignorant conservatives. Silly me not thinking you made a funny... shoot, I am such a moran!1!!!!!111!!!1!

Firstly, I didn't **** on Clinton.

Secondly, I'm neither mislead nor ignorant - I never claimed to be a liberal

Finally, my comment was directed at KevinKohler, the person I was conversing with, and since I don't consider his debating style to reveal he's a liberal, I decided to slag him by equating his claim that Canada harbours terrorists with something Clinton said.

I'm sorry you've gotten your knickers in a twist over the Clinton reference, however, that's all on you not me.

NSA spied on the German chancellor.

Was this really your rebuttal? Are you that lazy? I said people in general wouldn't be safe anywhere, but that it would make it harder for our government, and would make the companies that leave no longer complicit in the crime. I also stated that it would get the government's attention if a lot of big companies started leaving.

I heard canada has decriminalized prostitution. Been thinking of moving their anyways to become a pimp and protect some hos. They could prolly utilize my caveman instincts.

I think it is possible. I was required by a customer to put a web server outside the US. They might have tolerated it in Canada, but they really wanted Germany, or at least in the EU. We compromised with the UK where at least they speak some kind of English.

Of course, this is nothing that that the NSA would care about and if they did, they could probably figure out a way in wherever it was.

As someone that has worked in IT for over 15 years, I think what people do not realize is that IT companies locate where they can attract the talent they need. Although I am sure Canada is a great place to live, you have to convince enough developers and administrators that it is. That is the challenge. Places like California and the Research Triangle in North Carolina are easy sells in that regard. Rightly or wrongly, when many people think of Canada they think of Siberian Winters.

Interesting, your client required you to do that specifically because of the NSA, or other reasons?

Data Privacy law differences but referenced the NSA in a conversation.
