Well, the talk radio of my youth was quite literally talking -- or rather, the kind of talking you'd expect between interested adults in a bar discussing current events. It wasn't hysterical, it wasn't designed to whip people into a frenzy. The audience was attracted more by the personability of the host, rather than the temperature of their spew. Bruce Williams is an excellent example of this, Paul Harvey (to a lesser extent) another.
Did Paul Harvey have his own talk radio program on the East Coast.
I don't think the FCC allowed nationwide syndication of talk radio until the late 80's or early 90's. When the rules changed, Rush Limbaugh was one of the first to go syndication all across America.
