Senator presses NSA to reveal whether it spies on members of Congress

Google the Church Committee and look at the achilles heel he predicted the NSA would become if it was not tightly regulated, and this was nearly 40 years ago for Christ's sake. I beg to differ with you, in that we are most assuredly where we are today because of apathy and failure to do as Senator Church admonished all those years ago. It has been a progression that got us where we're at now, not something that was flipped on like a switch the day Obama sat down at his desk in the Oval Office. Of our 16 or so intelligence agencies, the NSA has the largest budget and the least oversight. Jump on the band wagon and join the voices that DEMAND reform of the NSA rather than stand in the corner with the other ******s that call Ed Snowden a traitor.

I think you have a point. But I also think you make the wrong one. Oversight ie control is absolutely necessary. The more potential the instruments are the more important it is to keep a handle on those that wield them. But it is not a solution to forbid the use. That would be stupid and even negligent. But it must be made clear to everybody what is being done.

Congress has proven they cannot be trusted with top secrets.
I$$A is a proven leaker, hence the WH now only lets him read and not copy under the auspices of Boehner.
M. Bachmann on the House Intelligence committee?:lamo

Neither Snowden nor the NSA are innocent. I'm glad that we're talking about privacy rights and the 4th more now, but I'm pissed that Snowden keep releasing information that hurts the US abroad.

The same can be said of the administration.

But the GOP is mostly silent, as compared to last decade.

But it is now only a small majority, as you saw with the Amash amendment.
For the time being, a coalition between Libertarians and Dem. Liberals vs. Neo-Cons.
Yet Amash has a dangerous RINO primary in MI .
The majority of both parties are either silent or passively indignant about the NSA topic.

Before its passage there were two men that could have prevented its passage, Patrick Leahy and Tom Dashel, the only two who's offices were anthraxed, with anthrax originating from a US army post.

That shows how serious they are.

There is a reason some people show up mysteriously dead...Michael Hastings comes to mind.

What?? Where in there did I say "forbid the use"? If you look back at where you quoted ME, you see "reform". But before you say it, NOT OBAMA reform, but Sensenbrenner reform, Paul reform.

And what has Snowden released that hurts anything other than US feelings and pride, or embarrasses us?

I can see your going to refuse to read Senator Church's recommendations to congress in 1976 so that you can be more informed about what you speak, or Sensenbrenner's bi-partisan bill, or the Amash bill. But if you did, you would find that all congresses in the past 40 years have failed us where the NSA is concerned. This isn't a partisan problem, its government failure, FAILURE!!

Sorrily Obama is the man in charge right now.

So what then? It's OK to spy on us, but not the douchebags who run this country? If anything, I'd say that needs to be reversed.

I never stated that nor meant to imply that.

Hmm, this does seem to say congress is more worried about the NSA spying on them than the people. But I guess I could have expected nothing less. Congress always takes care of themselves first, the best benefits, the best health care, the best retirement system, the best per diem, the best expenses allowed, so many free trips back and forth to D.C., then they usually exempt themselves from the laws they pass that they expect us to toe the line on.

Such is our beloved government, the elites who know what is better for us than we ourselves.

We already know the NSA spies on congress but by doing this action it puts the NSA in a direct minefield with the people that make the laws and can have direct authority over these programs.

Do you support I$$A leaking secret confidential info from the WH on Benghazi to use against Obama?

How do you think the USA finds out about traitors like I$$A ?

But being ignored by the majority of adults in both parties in both chambers .
Nice to see both sides of the aisle pressing NSA on its practices

Sure if it deliverers us the truth or happens to lead to the truth about what happened. By the NY Times (i believe that was the news agency that ran a report) that showed that nothing was really covered up.

Which FOX's Bill O'Reilly immediately labeled Bull**** and the spin game is on.
I$$A is now limited to just viewing data on Benghazi and not copying it or receiving hard copy, under the auspices of Boehner's people.
I$$A is the GOP House's version of Snowden .

Of course O'Reilly labeled it bull****. It goes against every single Foxs' talking point about the whole Benghazi affair.

Update:
NSA Response To Senator Sanders
Washington (CNN) - Congress is just like everyone else. That's the message the National Security Agency has for Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The independent senator from Vermont sent a letter to the agency Friday, asking whether it has or is "spying" on members of Congress and other elected American officials.

The NSA provided a preliminary response Saturday that said Congress has "the same privacy protections as all U.S. persons."

"NSA's authorities to collect signals intelligence data include procedures that protect the privacy of U.S. persons. Such protections are built into and cut across the entire process. Members of Congress have the same privacy protections as all U.S. persons," said the agency in a statement obtained by CNN.

The response goes on to promise the agency will continue to work with Congress on the issues - without ever addressing the senator's real question.

So you support NSA's domestic spying?

I certainly hope it's spying on those crooked senators

Yet the NYT is also in the same boat as Snowden in leaking confidential and walking the very tight rope.
I agree with Peter King's assessment of the NYT with snowden.

And find it rich that anti-NSAers think they are the only ones who opposed the Iraqi war.
I didn't hear any of that last decade .
