China could defeat US in East Pacific conflict by 2020: Russian analyst

Has the U.S.A. and China just agreed to be the next major world opponents ? Just to give us something to do ?

Now your being cynical. :)

Civil war for China, WOW! That's quite a prediction. Ok, but I'll stay with the Pentagon on this, and THEY have reported their "serious concerns" to Congress about the growing threat of China's military to project itself beyond the China sea. So if you disbelieve the threat, you need to argue with the Pentagon.

A Chinese civil war is not inevitable, but only a fool would think it out of the question. Especially with a 2 billion population. Just like a famine, resource crisis, disease, and so on. Our own government employs people to consider such dangers for our own nation. And we do not have nearly the population. I am not saying tomorrow, but china needs to face some changes.

As for the "threat." China WILL pose a threat past the China sea. That is in their agenda. They cannot be trusted. I agree with the pentagon assessment, but I take their words with a grain of salt. They are fighting men. They are paid to consider dangers. The Soviet Union was a threat too right? Did we ever get into a shooting war? Not in the open.

The question you should be asking is not about navies. China would not be able to compete with the United States Navy. What you should ask...is would China risk nuclear war for a little bit of land? For communism? And would their people stand behind that? Would our politicians stand up against it?

It all comes down to nukes. Not ships.

Well sure. I would not ever place ANYTHING out of the realm of possibility. It's one thing to say China could experience revolution/civil war one day, but quite another to put it in the realm of certainty. I mean we've had both in America, point in fact, we're not doing all that well here right now and one could just as likely predict the same for here. But that's all beside the point that you fellas keep arguing against the growing threat of China's military. But your arguing with the Pentagon, not me.

And what is this that China can't be trusted. What does that mean. And how do you both agree with the Pentagons assessment and take it with a grain of salt?

China has a weapon that destroys a carrier with one shot.

China could soon defeat the United States and its allies in a naval conflict in the East Pacific, says Vassily Kashin, a senior research fellow at the Moscow-based Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies.

In a commentary published on Dec. 27 on the website of the Voice of Russia, the Russian government's international radio broadcasting service, Kashin says it is "highly probable" that by 2020 China could defeat the US in a local conflict in the east part of the Pacific or slow down the transportation of US forces to the region after it completes its current cycle of reforming and rearming the People's Liberation Army.

"China could be able of reaching its political goals even before the US localizes all the necessary forces for a full-scale counterattack," Kashin said.

Well, we could only hope that such events need not ever be stress tested.

And this is taken seriously because of Russia's rich tradition of naval power and success?:lamo

I don't know. It would appear you should be laughing your ass off at the Pentagon for taking it seriously. And you should arrange a meeting with the Pentagon brass to explain to them that their "serious concerns" are unfounded!

Since there's no such Pentagon statement in the OP I'll wait to hear from them.:peace

It's in two threads this one included, but not to worry. I've arranged for them to contact you.

I have no doubt the Pentagon takes China seriously, but this OP forecast US defeat, and that's well beyond the evidence.:peace

Oh, there's no question it's hyperbole, that the Russian analysis goes beyond an otherwise very real threat.
