Ted Cruz Walks Out Of Nelson Mandela Memorial Service In Protest

I'm like Mandelas biggest fan and not so much a fan of Obama and I'm not upset.

WHY WOULD YOU BE?

I was drawing a contrast to partisan faux attacks against Cruz. I am no Cruz fan, but I agree with him turning his back on Castro.

But, OK, many Democrats on this forum are big Castro fans I guess so are outraged that Cruz wouldn't shake is hand and showed contempt of Castro. On another thread, I posted I would have preferred if President Obama had kicked Castro in the nuts.

Candidly, I don't know much about Mandela so don't really have much opinion of him one way or the other. If he was a human and civil rights hero, then I certainly would agree he was a hero. Sort of simple really.

How the hell that would make Castro also a civil rights hero is just bizarre to me.

>" A conservative estimate gives the range, according to Matthew White in his website Necrometrics, at between 5,000-12,000 Cubans killed by the Castro regime compared with Chileans killed by the Pinochet regime which number 3,197. Rudolph Joseph Rummel, a political science professor at the University of Hawaii and an expert in Democide (murder by government) also takes into account the Cuban boat people who have died fleeing the dictatorship and estimates 73,000 dead Cubans between 1959 and 1987. In The Black Book of Communism in chapter 25 "Communism in Latin America" by Pascal Fontaine states that in Cuba between 1959 through the late 1990s "between 15,000 and 17,000 people were shot." All these are conservative numbers. The Cuban Archives place the number at 100,000..."<

Notes from the Cuban Exile Quarter: The Rising Body Count in Cuba

This is a bald-faced publicity stunt. Shame on the "junior" (and not just in tenure terms) Senator from the "great" state of Texas.

As someone who thinks the embargo is about 40 years past it's need, I can still recognize and understand the castro family and their control of the island still being a hot issue for Cuban-Americans.

Cuban-Americans are a small but vocal demographic who are highly concentrated in a volatile district in a volatile swing state. I understand their desire to stick it to Castro, but enough is enough. The main reason the embargo hasn't ended yet is that neither party wants to lose Miami-Dade. The consternation over a handshake with Castro has literally nothing to do with Communism.

You really just can't seem to think clearly when you speak about this man can you?

Here's just a couple of examples from his speech when he "spoke about himself".

Honestly, it's like they're reading a completely different speech.

The only thing those two have in common is that they were both presidents.

If you actually bothered to read or listen to the speech, which I'd bet actual currency you did not, he never compared himself to Mandela. That said, this "Obama is a racist" meme is moronic. Anyone who honestly believes that, quite frankly, really doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.

8 sentences you quoted. He said "I," "me," "my" and "myself" 14 times. He used Mandela's name and "he" 3 times.

SO WHAT? One thing people do during eulogies is reflect on the deceased's effect on their lives. And several of those "I"s were "how can I be better," or along similar lines.

Seriously, this is ridiculous. It's like you guys aren't even trying anymore, you're just spraying diarrhea against a wall and seeing what doesn't get washed off by the first light rain.

No, he said he benefitted from Mandela. And if he did, he wouldn't be on this type of social justice crusade that he's on, to redistribute the misery in this country. Everything he does and says is about putting it to the rich....the rich being white. I'm sorry, but I'm done with Obama. It's one thing to try to help your people, it's another to try to so transform a country as to subvert the pure intent of its founding principles. Just because it took a long time for those principles to come to everyone, doesn't make them wrong.

LOL

That's a good one. Obama is just as much in the pocket of the rich as any President we've ever had.

Cruz walks out and Obama takes selfy pictures with the Danish Prime Minister while Michelle steams. It's all over all media how Obama disgraced the tribute by hitting on the Danish Prime Minister in the open for all to see. Michelle finally got up out of her chair and forced Obama to take her seat and she took his putting herself in between the knockout Danish Prime minister and the most pathetic president this nation has ever had to endure. That is what kids do in high school. Bowing to the communist leader of Cuba and trying to get him some in front of the entire world paying tribute to Mandela. What a pathetic president this Oblabla has become. "Change Has Come To America"! It sure has you useless piece of dung.

Not really important at all.

Like the Obama selfie this is a complete non issue.

These few days in South Africa are about Madiba, not petty American partisan pissing matches that only someone with an IQ in the single digits worries about.

In terms of American exceptionalism, petty pissing matches seem to be the real superpower.

Sadly, I agree. WHo can get elected in this country without big money behind them?:(

That's not what happened at all. Michelle didn't get out of her seat to put herself in between the two. President Obama got out of his seat and moved to the aisle as he was called to get ready for his speech and rather than walk past her to sit back down he asked her to move across. Regarding the actual picture I'll just post what i already have in another thread.

Oh my. Obviously you guys only get selective media coverage there. I watched the entire Memorial Service and saw Michelle Obama laughing with Thorning-Schmidt, Cameron and President Obama just before the picture was talking.

Backed up by the photographer who took the actual photos by the way...

The photographer who captured President Barack Obama, Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and UK Prime Minister David Cameron taking a selfie at Nelson Mandela's memorial service on Tuesday insists Michelle Obama's stern reaction seen in the photo was not directed at the group.

"I later read on social media that Michelle Obama seemed to be rather peeved on seeing the Danish prime minister take the picture," Roberto Schmidt, the Agence France-Presse photographer who took the photo, wrote in a blog post. But photos can lie. In reality, just a few seconds earlier the first lady was herself joking with those around her, Cameron and Thorning-Schmidt included. Her stern look was captured by chance."

That didn't stop the tabloids from splashing the first lady's reaction shots on their covers.

"Who's the bigger fool? The fool, or the fool who follows him?"- Ben Kenobi.

Keep it classy, TP.

I don't understand the GOP. First, they attack Mandela for being a supposed communist. Then, they praise his work for holding the free & fair elections that the capitalist apartheid government would not and freeing the prisoners that the capitalist apartheid government would not. So, is Mandela now bad or good? Who cares. Right wing schizophrenia is in full swing.

Here, let me help you with that since you seem so confused and unable to understand.

See, the "right wing" and the "left wing" are amalgamations of hundreds of thousands of people and thus does not have a singular hive mind and thought process on every issue but rather can have multiple views within it's grouping....thus why you have some who perhaps focus more on the notion of Mandela being a "communist" while others focusing on some of his good works. Additionally, one can look at a complex and diverse situation complete with it's own context and circumstances and extrapolate support or antipathy towards various parts of it without necessarily speaking of the entire situation. For example, it's why a young running back could say OJ Simpson is one of his heroes due to his running style and tenacity on the field and we could assume that he's not also a fan of the potential murder or theft. Perhaps move outside of your black and white, all or nothing, blinders over my eyes world view you like to jump in when it sorts your porpogandaizing and attacking purposes and it won't be so confusing to you.

It's one thing to be embarrassed about Obama here at home, but now we have to live with the embarrassment of having this retard pasted all over the world's media acting retarded.

If there's one thing I have come to learn and gain an appreciation for in my 45 years on this planet, it is my love and understanding for the emotions of women. There is NO WAY my wife would allow me to act the way he did at the event. How incredibly shameful.

Ted ended his me thinking about supporting him for going period. He had no business there, no ties to Mandela and is not enough of a national leader to have made a difference.
Our race beaten and baiting leader and former leaders are another story. But I still see any need to spend million of taxpayer money to send our "dignitaries".

All I can say is that Cruz should have refused the invitation in the first place. And what the hell are we doing sending a congressional delegation to Mandela's memorial service in the first place? The shippers have yet to explain how Mandela has anything to do with the US past or present. Other than being apparantly close friends with folks who hate us that is.
