OMFG!

Say it ain't so, Pippi
Books like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn have long been banned in many schools and libraries over alleged racism. Could Pippi Longstocking be next? According to one theologian, Astrid Lindgren's classic children's novels about the pig-tailed adventurer feature unsavory "colonial racist stereotypes." Pippi joins a long list of surprising children's characters who have been accused of racism. From Babar to the Smurfs, here's a look:

I remember a few Little Rascal episodes that were blatantly racist, however they must be viewed within the proper context.

People need to grow the hell up.

OMG. I loved Pippi and had many unprintable fantasies about her when I was 8 or 9 years old.

Well, they say that history is written by the victorious.

Sigh™

It's pretty obvious that these people never read Huckleberry fin. Oh no, it uses the word Nigger! The humanity!

Don't you know all literary works, history especially US, is all racist. All white people, unless you marry a black are racist. All laws are racist. Just look how many innocent blacks are in jail.

Having tribes of black children abasing themselves at the feet of a blonde white nordic child isn't a problem....

I have seen some children's books that date to 1900 that are racist. There was one series from that time called "Little Black Sambo" That should not be in any library. Just have to use common sense when drawing that line

Does it hurt your feelings?

At the time it was written, it wasn't. People need to understand that everything on the planet isn't going to match up to modern ethical standards. Like I said, people need to grow the hell up and deal with reality on reality's terms.

Joseph Goebbels used common sense, too.

Anyone that doesn't like the book doesn't have to read it.

Why am I not surprised by those leaping to the defence of black kids showing slavish deference?

See if you can guess which part was edited out of the remake in recognition of changed attitudes:

We're defending free speech. By Any Means Necessary hasn't been banned and that book calls for genocide.

I don't find literature and children's media that reinforces negative racial stereotypes to be "entertainment" I do however feel that Longstocking and the other characters is overdoing it.

I don't see why not. If you can't deal with books, be that on a personal level or as a parent, then the only problem is in you, not in the book itself.

My Grandpa and I would have breakfast at Sambos there in Oakland before we went to the Raider's training camps. Most of the waitresses (and the patrons) were black. In fact I think the owner was as well.

Little black Sambo is an extreme example. However those particular books should not be in school or public libraries, especially in any children's section. If a parent want's to put them in their child's library next to Green Eggs & Ham, then I say rock on.

Any liberty should offer what people are willing to partake in. I would also prefer all literature be in it's original form and the way the author intended it to be presented.

I don't condone literary censorship. However turn of the century racist children's books should not be in the children's section of a library.

How is that any different then tribes of white girls at a Chris Brown concert?

Yes. Pretending that our history did not happen, compounds the likelihood that it will repeat itself. I do not support censorship of books, no matter what their content. Some books should not be in public schools, due to the nature of their content (porn comes to mind), but to try and treat historical literature as if it's "bad", and should be banned, is not a good direction for our society to take. One thing leads to another........

The story of Little Black Sambo was on all the placemats at Sambos, and the waitresses even brought me crayons to color mine in with. I wasn't the only kid who used to eat there, in fact most of the others weren't white like me. Don't recall that being a problem as these were all kids I played with in my Grandpa's neighborhood. Didn't make me feel superior, except in my coloring skills. Never had the urge to enslave someone or order folks around.
