I thought was nice a story to share. The Coke company has decided to suspen its ads in the Philippines and donate that budget of 2.5 mil to help with relief efforts.

Good Job Coke.

Coke Suspends Ad Campaign For Best Reason You Could Imagine

Coca-Cola announced last week that the company is suspending its brand advertising in the Philippines so that it can donate its entire ad budget to typhoon relief efforts. The company has so far donated more than $2.5 million in cash and in-kind contributions.

Coca-Cola is a heartless multinational corporation. Therefore, this story must be false.

Goddamn evil corporations!

Yes, a corporation did something nice (which corps do all the time, btw); therefore, all corporations are pure and lovely and beneficial and super duper awesome wonderful fun time good job. Let's give them more corporate welfare!

I know that corporations do lots of good stuff, even Coca-Cola - whose overseas policies are...let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say "suspect".

And I'm against them receiving corporate welfare. Seriously, why do you need Washington to help you supply diabetic sugar-water around the world?

Still - gotta pick on the left sometimes though. It's fun.

You can bet every dollar is going to be spent wisely, vs our tax dollars.

Corporations never waste money?

Please tell me more of your home planet.

They are far better with money than the government.

Coke is a good company. I would buy some of their stock if I didn't think it was already over-valued.

:agree: The difference is when a corporation finds that there is money being wasted on anything, they immediately correct whatever is causing the waste...poor advertising campaign, overpriced suppliers of raw materials, excess personnel, citing some examples, while government often continues programs, for various reasons, that waste money . The difference is that business has to show a profit, whereas government does not. It even seems at times that government often throws more money at that already being wasted, hoping that might correct the problem. Strange thinking, which might explain our $17 trillioin debt!

That right, sister!

How was turkey day?

eh, even if it is a typical corporate PR move, good on them. they could have just as easily not done the right thing in this case.

I firmly believe that no charity is altruistic. Coca-Cola gets goodwill, a tax write-off, and other benefits from donating.

And I, for one, am good with that. People do it for the same reasons, not to mention the "warm feeling inside" when they give to someone else. That's just as much of a "for me" move as any.

I never got the point of putting scrutiny on donating. Some people just need to be angry about something.

i agree. if they are doing good, they are doing good even if it's for selfish reasons.

and "some people?" pretty much everyone. ****, i have spent hours of my weekend fending off angry libertarians because i had the gall to suggest that retail workers should be able to spend time with their families on Thanksgiving. we all love to get righteously outraged about stupid ****.

Well, it's a grocery chain. It may need to stay open on Thanksgiving. Stands to reason that enough people would want to work Thanksgiving (for time and a half) that it wouldn't be a problem. It honestly wouldn't shock me if the people in that protest were people who didn't actually have to work anyway, but just felt like this was a good enough soapbox to climb.

All jobs require sacrifice and fulfilling unwanted demands. Working a non-religious holiday doesn't seem all that evil.

Very nice, and lots of fun! I saw that we can put up with each other for a few hours, but that might be because we ate turkey, which studies have shown does seem to have a calming effect on people! Maybe that's the answer we've been looking for to explain those in DC...they just need to eat a lot more turkey! :lamo:

Greetings, qapdst. :2wave:

I spent 15 years (3/4) of my American life, working for Coke. Good company. But "political correctness" and the union would kill it.

The Great Coca-Cola consists of several units. Coca-Cola Enterprises, for example, is subject to "Teamster" union, which led the unforgettable Hoffа.
During the time that I worked for this company, labor productivity fell twice and the company ceased to generate income. Survives only by subsidies from the Coca-Cola International.
About political correctness I will not say here, because you say that I'm a racist.:3oops:

They gave more money than China.
