France issues travel warning to Parts of Chicago.

No, I was looking for Rep. Maxine Waters. I heard she was still standing on the corner of Western and Florence Ave. trying to catch a CIA operative selling crack to blacks. I was curious if it she was still out there.

I honestly doubt that is true. I think the fact that the media didn't even really report on innocent bystanders up until 20-30 years ago is what sets a different tone to the situation. The media didn't really care about reporting innocent bystanders until the 80s crack epidemic. Not because they needed it, but because it was unavoidable.

Going back to Chicago: Chicago has always been a hellhole. It was a city founded in the spirit of religious colonialism, on ground infested with mosquitoes, and made wealthy by Italian gangsters. As far as I'm concerned, it was a hellhole from day 1.

It is true. A majority of the gangland hits were one way rides. I'll go so far as to say that Organized crime then had a different work ethic than the street thugs today.

What does everyone make of this? Having visited the city on a number of occasions i'm sad because it really is a great city to visit. Given the high number of murders, shootings etc is the warning warranted or is it an overrecation? Interested to hear from everyone but especially from posters who live or grew up in the Chicago.

It shouldn't be seen as an insult, so much as the French government taking care of its citizens. If you are an American, and are signed up for the State Department Safe Travel Experience Program (STEP), you will receive the same warnings about cities, countries and locales around the world on an almost weekly basis or more while you are abroad.

Yes. It is not something I would worry about. Just doing the job.
 
We give threat briefs to soldiers going over seas for work or leisure.
Its nothing personal, just giving soldiers and their families a fair assessment of risks.
I'm sure this "knock out" game would be something people would be warned about when coming here since that could potentially lead to death, another thing might be the fact that some terrorist have slipped through cracks and made it into our country through our immigration system (see AQ in Kentucky, recently).

French tourists should make sure they have their safety kits... pole and white flag... It worked well for their armies

There would be no United States had it not been for France.

No Statute of Liberty too.

The only thing the French proved by not sticking around to fight any more to keep their Vietnam colony and French occupied foreign country is that they aren't THAT stupid.
