Vancouver Bans Doorknobs...

Oh, flame bait, then...shoulda known.

Because you're such a good example of not telling other people what they believe :lamo

I kind of agree with right wingers on this one. I could see why businesses and even government offices should be required to have lever handles - but I just can't justify a law to make new construction of homes/buildings doorknob free. I have to like doorknobs over handles. They can be extremely stylish touches to homes and not all are made in the same way or even the same material.

So buy a fancy ass doorknob and install it. You just need a screwdriver and 5 minutes.

Maybe I'm wrong - but doesn't the law ban new doorknobs? What if some Vancouver resident wanted to build his house with doorknobs?

"If you like your doorknob, you'll get to keep your doorknob!"

They were probably refering to the mayor. As luck would have it, our term limits will prevent us from keeping our doorknob. ;)

That's freedom for you, always keeping the wants of the people in mind.

It's folks like us that make America great. If the government can regulate your door hardware, then they can regulate who can get married and who can't.

Ummm point of order... it was folks like ALL of us that made America great. Another annoying fact to your rant, the 'gubmint' DID/DOES infact try to regulate who you could marry first with the race issue and now with SSM.

The gubmint also requires smoke alarms and fire escape windows in new private home construction. Unvented gas heaters are not allowed anymore. Many places rescrict the use of aluminum wiring in walls, pressed fibreboard septic pipes, asbestos siding....

Now back in the early 70's I marveled at the lever style doors in FRG as I had never seen such a thing before. Amazing that folks like us didn't think of that but did think of mini frigs in barkolounger chairs...

Might say something about the folks 'who made America great'.... :peace

Government regulation of our private lives, such as marriage, door knobs, light bulbs and filling your own gas tank are all going too far.

Sounds like he's **** outta luck...lol

I suppose you have an example of even one liberal saying something of this nature, right? I mean surely you wouldn't just make this up to attack. That would be a straw man, dishonest debate. You're not dishonest, are you?

I didn't hear a liberal specifically say this, but I have seen that liberals love big government. The bigger the government, the more powerful it is, the happier liberals are.

I have pretty severe arthritis in my wrists and thumbs, and I have been replacing all my old door knobs in my house with lever type knobs. It's so much nicer when it doesn't hurt to open a door.
I get it completely.

So the title of the article should have been, "Arthritic and Infirm Too Stupid to Change Knobs for Levers; Vancouver to Take Charge".

Probably easier to open with mittens still on

I think if you want to do it on interiors, that is fine. I would think on exterior doors the levers would be easier to break open with a heavy hammer than a standard round door knob.

Given that you said it it would be easier to block the door by putting a jack between the door and the handle and jacking it where the it cannot turn than with a knob.

You do realize with the exception of light bulbs you are being regulated by STATE governments, right??? But what about the unvented heaters, emergency access windows in bedrooms, firewall ratings, seat belts, air bags...

I'm amazed lever door knobs are not THE handle on doors already.

I don't have a beef with not wanting door knobs mandated or marriage restricted because a few don't like gay folks, getting rid of incandescant lights works for me (sometimes the angry old man routine is little more than that)... but I do get a good laugh when some think 'their' kind made America great...

THAT is what got my attention, I have gassed up in NJ, can't say I felt my rights were infringed by having an attendant fill my tank... I reckon some folks are a tad more sensitive... :peace

Funny how unsourced such statements are... Reagan expanded the federal government, BushII greatly expanded the reach the government has into our so-called private communications. CONs are going out of their way to dictate who can and can't marry, just how a doctor can work with their patient when it comes to reproductive rights. Does a bigger military make it more powerful- if yes, then CONs LOVE bigger government....

I'd say CONs love a big government and deeper into your private lives government as much as anyone... :peace

No really they did in their new building code. The is apparently suppose to make new construction more accessible to handicapped people. It does only apply to new construction, old homes may keep their doorknobs.

From this CBC offbeat article.

I honestly don't know what to think about this.

Gotta say that while I love Canada, this is not really a surprise. This summer we vacationed in the eastern Canadian Maritimes for a week and loved it tremendously. However, what my friends on the right like to call 'nanny state government' did raise its ugly head twice. Getting and actual drink in most parts of Canada is a waste of time as they have laws strictly limiting the amount of liquor that can go into it. I gave us asking for a decent Long Island as its a waste of time, effort and money. And then we tried to order a hamburger at a bar that was said to have the best burgers in St. John only to be told they only come one way - well done by order of the law. We were assured it would not be dry..... and it was.... how else could it not be?

So this thing about doorknobs is not at all unexpected.

Has anyone started the Canadian Doorknob Assn. yet. You need a lobby. If you don't protect your doorknob rights today, they will be gone tomorrow.

I'm not a conservative. But I do agree with bush not being a true conservative and I agree that there are contradictions among people who claim to be conservative. I don't know a whole lot about Reagan, but I'm not on that bandwagon.

Yes. I have lived in numerous places without these features and miraculously enough, I am still here to talk about it. I think we are intelligent enough to know what we want, when we are building something for ourselves. I think it is ludicrous the government should be able to tell someone what type of door they can get.
Lucky you. Great idea, lets abolish all building codes and let builders wing it.
Should your thinking apply to business owners? theaters and factories? I mean what business is it of the Government to tell a private business owner that smoke alarms, Fire Extinguishers and Fire escapes are mandatory.

I believe that it's a damn good idea. The doorknobs used in most American homes on doors are useless. They are very difficult for a lot of people to use and restrict access.

European style levers are much better in my opinion.

Where does it end, though?

I'da ended up in jail if someone ****ed over my 7-n-7.

Ahhh the old 'he ain't no TRUE CON' gambit.

Seems there never are any 'true CONs' in government, but I do believe I didn't use the term 'true' while you attempted to broad brush every liberal as loving of the bigger government...

don't go small ball after throwing a medicine ball into the conversation... :peace
