On Tuesday, Wilson defeated Bruce Austin, the 24-year incumbent, by a margin of just 26 votes.

Austin, who is African-American, called Wilson's tactics "disgusting."

"I don't think it's good for both democracy and the whole concept of fair play," he said.

"He never put out to voters that he was white," Austin said in a statement to the Houston Chronicle. "This is one of the few times a white guy has pretended to be a black guy and fooled black people."

Apparently race is an important factor in some elections, but not in the direction some would expect.

Now...why would the color of his skin matter? Are people actually suggesting the black voters in that district are so ****ing stupid that they would have rather voted for a black guy over a white guy instead of a candidate for their views? Im....SHOCKED....Shocked I tell ya...

I read the article, and I lolled. I lolled hard. Just imagine the people's faces when they realized that he's not the black guy they thought they were voting for, but some old white dude. So far, there's no indication that he ever lied, he just never showed his own picture, and people just voted for who they thought was a black man, revealing to all that Houstonians are dumb racists. My hats off to Dave Wilson, the man who trolled an entire city.

Well...now...be fair. Its just the opposing candidate that is making the claim that black people are so stupid they would vote for a guy based solely on his skin color. In...THIS instance at least. Now...lets see if the population at large gets upset and demands a recall and new election.

This is just... wow.

I'm from the Houston area, and had to go downtown every day for a job. The people living in the wards are some of the most backwards, racist dumb****s alive. Every single little thing that goes wrong is due solely to those "racist cracker ass mother ****ers", even though they trashed the place, and turned what used to be a nice city into a squalid hell hole full of drugs, rape and murder.

I think it is funny that someone would make that their campaign strategy and just friggin' hilarious that it actually worked.

And on top of that, it's a 6 year term! :lamo

Good for him. It's important to be an informed voter, but if I were him I would never have revealed my face. Who knows how long he could have had such a cushy job.

"This is one of the few times a white guy has pretended to be a black guy and fooled black people."

Oh...I dont dont know that it is necessarily a 'few' times. After all...Bill was deemed the first 'black' president, Obama had black folk fooled enough for them to think he actually saw them as something other than a voting bloc, and Hillary..."Wahl...ya know...she aint no ways taired...."

At least Wilson didn't say "that if you like your healthcare plan you can keep it".

I know someone who secured a contract with a Korean company, back in the 1980s, always signing pertinent communications as "Kim". At the consummation of the (eventually profitable for all sides) business relationship, the chaebol dudes nearly had a collective heat attack, when they saw that "Kim" is actually Kimberly - with a perfectly Celtic last name and appearance, and two X chromosomes, to boot.

All this shows is people don't research the candidates. [definitely low info voters]

The Austin Guy has been there for 24 years, maybe it is time for some new blood.
Actually, I think this is the same guy who ran for Mayor a few years ago,
He may not be a good fit.

It's disappointing this has been spun in to a racial thing. The two examples of things this guy put in his election literature suggest implicit fraud entirely independently of any idea of him pretending to be black, which in contrast sounds a bit petty (or maybe politicking on the part of the defeated opponent).

It does bring home how ignorant most voters (regardless of who or where) are of the individuals they're voting to represent them. I can't understand how someone can vote for anyone, in any election, they don't know enough about to be aware of their skin colour (though it in itself is irrelevant).

From the article...

"I don't think it's good for both democracy and the whole concept of fair play," he said.

Its a good thing I wasn't drinking anything when I read this. I would have spewed my drink all over my keyboard and screen. :lamo Since when is politics ever played "fair"? :lamo I watched the video where they showed the fliers that were sent out to everyone. It has lots of faces from various black folks on it and the endorsement from "Ron Wilson" it had the fine print as Ron Wilson being his cousin. Nothing about the flier said or indicated that any of the people on that flier was Wilson or that Wilson was a black guy. If people actually took his skin color into account when they voted then they just assumed that Wilson was black. Which is on them and no one else. I'm really curious as to what the general peoples reactions will be to finding out the guy is white.

Granted Wilson doesn't deny that he "led" people to believe he was black, but still...nothing in the fliers actually truely indicated that he actually was black.

To be fair, this sounds like the plot from "The Distinguished Gentleman".

Who promised a fair election? Politics is a dirty game. This guy hardly pretending to be black. Sounding a certain way on paper and being endorsed by a black politician hardly makes any determination about a person. Personally I commend him for thinking about of the box and succeeding. In this day of media and the internet it is incomprehensible why anyone would have been confused on his race in the first place. It's clear that they vote on race alone and no other variable. So who knows...perhaps he'll do his district some good and will wake them up. Right now the district is a joke, how stupid can a community be, well that district may have just answered that question.

Yes, it is disappointing that this has spun into a racial thing. But what is more disturbing? That this got spun into a racial thing? That Wilson never once indicated what race he was in the flier, or the possibility that people may not have elected him if they had known he was white?

And there was no actual fraud here. He cannot control what people assume.

And the news lately there included stories of shenanigans going on so I'm not inclined to think it was race driven. Yes, the dude was deceptive, it happens.

Still, the position is Community College Trustee. Not a whole lot "care" factor for many of the voters checking the box is likely.

I think you have two issues with race.

1) you have some disgruntled voters who voted for a guy who they thought was black. If color was a huge issue - well they shouldn't be surprised when the ugly accusations get hurled at them.

2)you have a candidate that likely intentionally mislead voters about his color in order to be elected. This may have been to combat what is listed in #1, but frankly, Republicans have an issue being perceived as not being inclusive to blacks and even for some, outright racist. So using misdirection about race was probably a pretty stupid idea for the party in general.

But frankly, he never lied - just misdirected. I think it was FITH to do, but in the scheme of things, not gonna give it much thought.
