The Food and Drug Administration is exploring a nationwide ban of trans fats in food. Removing trans fats from the "generally recognized as safe" list - a list that includes salt, sugar, and other typical substances - would be an incredible step for the FDA.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday took a first step toward potentially eliminating most trans fat from the food supply, saying it has made a preliminary determination that a major source of trans fats -- partially hydrogenated oils -- is no longer "generally recognized as safe."

While food manufacturers and restaurants have voluntarily lowered the trans-fats in the last ten years, that's not enough for the FDA and other food nannies. Some of the common foods affected will be donuts, crackers, popcorn, frozen pizza, creamers, and canned frosting.

CNN notes that the Center for Science in the Public Interest has been pushing a campaign to get the FDA to prohibit trans fats for a long time now. This is a strange twist - CSPI was one of the groups that, in the 1980s, pushed American consumers to substitute trans fats in their diet for saturated fats.

Say it isn't so, your kidding me? What do you think about this? Shouldn't people regulate their own diets? What do you think this will do to the restaurant and food manufacturers?

To be fair.. most food makers have already removed Trans fat from their products and it is only a small minority of hold-outs that are resisting reality.

As for people regulating their own diets, sure.. but the problem is people dont know or understand what the big food companies put in the food, hence we need regulation to protect the population. If it was not for these regulations then all sorts of chemicals that make food "cheaper" but dangerous would be in our food, and we would not know anything about till the day we are in the emergency room and glowing in the dark.

Heya Pete. :2wave: But what about these foods. They haven't been included. Despite some private industries doing so and Franchisees.

Some of the common foods affected will be donuts, crackers, popcorn, frozen pizza, creamers, and canned frosting.....snip~

If it affect frozen Pizza.....do you think it will affect Pizza joints that put their products out in grocers? Donuts and Canned Frosting too. That's a lot of Choccy yum yums. Besides have you ever smeared frosting on a woma.....uhm Well, That Sucks!

The article is miss-leading. It only effects SOME brands of those food stuffs. Go to the store, pick up a frozen pizza, and I would betcha that you can find many with no trans fat.

Out of curiosity but...where exactly in the Constitution does it allow the government to dictate what people can or cannot eat?

The same place it says we the people are to stupid to make our own decisions about health care.

so if there is somthing in the constitution where it says people have to eat waffles for breakfest on the 2nd day of every odd numbered month, would you follow that provision to the letter?

That's the point. The federal government was never intended to micromanage the activities of its citizens and the Constitution certainly contains nothing directing citizen activities...

It doesn't specify who we have to buy the waffles from, what the waffles contain (minimum standards) or if we can have syrup on them. ;)

that was not the point i was arguing.

if the Constitution of the united states had some pointless provision that says members of congress cannot wear Harlequin colored outfits, does the congress have to follow that provision without question like religious doctrine.

What do you think about this?

I have no problem with it.

Trans fats are man made poisons that add no nutritional value to foods.

They just make foods look and taste better.

If the only way you can make your product look and taste good is to add poison to it then you either need to find a new way to make your product desirable, or you need to go out of business.

General welfare dude.

Trans fats add nothing good to food and they detract from the general welfare.

Too bad, but it's Constitutional.

Yes, because members of Congress are required to uphold the Constitution, but it was not written to dictate personal behavior. It was written as our "framework" for government, limiting its power and granting rights for its citizens that the government cannot take away without an amendment. What has happened since its adoption through actions of both the Congress and Courts is an abomination...

but the actions of both the congress and court that turned the Constitution into a "abomination" were allowed to happen because of interpreting the Constitution.

congress and the courts have been doing it ever since George Washington ended his final term as president of the united states

So under 'general welfare' they could tell you what to eat, where to live, where to work, if you can procreate, ad infinitum.

Do you really want to open that door?

Got it, but it wasn't until the passage of the passage of the 16th amendment and FDRs programs being shoved through the courts that everything got way out of whack as that allowed the Congress get direct control of rewarding/punishing activities through the tax code and providing direct benefits to individuals, giving them extraordinary power...

some would argue that the people wanted the 16th amendment, imagine that, people wanted a income tax.

and it was okay for the founders and politicians in the 1800s and 1900s but not for any politican in the 20th century?

The 1900's were the 20th century, and a 1% tax on payrolls that didn't affect most wage earners, sure many supported that, but look at what has happened since. Do you realize that our current debt is roughly equal to the spending on social welfare programs since Johnson's War on Poverty?

So Congress shouldn't be able to ban someone selling you cyanide-laced hot dogs? You really want to close that door?

Absolutes are fun.

Labeling... people have a right to know what their eating and make informed choices.
Hows that for absolutes?

How many studies have you read regarding the health effects of trans fats and/or safe dosages of literally anything in your food?

I'm going to agree with you once in my life, except the glow in the dark part.

Until such time as they amended it...yes. The Constitution is the highest law in the US. It should be followed to a T.

You need to learn what the general welfare clause is about. Its about taxes. Not peoples health.

I have no problem with this. Americans are too fat. If it's gonna take a nanny state to whip us in to shape, so be it.

What really breaks my heart is looking at all the fat kids today. So many of today's kids are just..... chunky. I don't know if you blame the parents or the culture, but something's got to give.

We really need to put more of a premium on our health in this country. If it takes an FDA ban to get the ball rolling, so be it.
