Texas voter voting on 69 million dollar high school stadium

I wonder if it's more of an investment though to where the school/state will make money off of it. Tons and tons and tons and tons of money is pushed into sports programs at universities that only directly impact the few students on teams. Why do they do it? Because it makes the university money.

This is a high school stadium, do you really think they are going to recoup THAT cost?

Possibly, I doubt it but it's still a possibility. You can still rent it out for events and it may increase revenue in the community with indirect benefits.

Truthfully these kinds of votes should happen more often. Taxpayer should be able to vote on things they want their money spent on. They voted to spend it on a stadium, that's what they get. Unless I saw a reasonable benefit financially I wouldn't support it, I think it would be a very stupid idea. This is their reasoning from the article.

Reasonably there is a need. Katy ISD has an enrollment of over 60,000 students. Eight high schools.

A second stadium with a seating capacity of 14,000 will not be enough.

The only problem is if something happens in the area economically. They are going to have their hands out.

Move over Allen, Texas. Katy could get a 69 million dollar stadium. - The Bayou

Are you freaking kidding me !!!!

This state has slice and dice education, but yet they have revenue to build these unnecessary super complexes

Yep Texas has their priorities in order.

Well at least it's a stadium that can generate some revenue.

In California, (Los Angeles Unified School District) they build $578 million High Schools, and spend $1 billion to provide iPads for every student.

And trust me, you don't want to know the graduation rate Progressives have managed to reach...

Your first link doesn't work.

Well actually I grew up in the LAUSD and trust me there was no "splurging on education". The average class size ran about 40-50 students, many of the textbooks didn't even have covers on them. My school was falling apart and to accommodate for the volume of students, they built cheap bungalows that resemble trailers.

So I'm sure that not all schools will see those ipads. It will most likely be the higher performing schools, just like textbooks.

Regardless, there is a lot of wasteful spending there as well.

I think Jon Stewart said it best. "People only worry about budgets when money is spent on s*** they don't care about".

Well, let's try again.

New Public School in Los Angeles Named After Robert Kennedy is Most Expensive in American History - ABC News

As to the iPads, no, it's to every student. $1 billion. Within the first week of the initial rollout, students had discovered how to defeat the restrictions and gained full access to the internet. When the school demanded the iPads be returned, over 40% were reported stolen. That was within the first week, and at the intial school.

It takes a special kind of stupid to think the iPad program was going to work.

And yes, there has been splurging on education in the LAUSD for decades. When the cost of new school construction is added to the spending, there are few districts in the country that spend as much per pupil and achieves such dismal results.

This actually sums up both parties VERY well.

Oh. It's about a stadium.

When I saw the title of this thread, I just figured everybody would be like me and vote quite the hearty yes to 69.

No argument out of me on this one. I agree with 100%

I didn't say that there wasn't splurging in the school district. What I said was many of those school did not get "spoiled" like other schools. And I know this for FACT because I went to on of those schools (Washington Prep High School c/o 94). These inner city schools had the bare minimum and no one is going to tell me that there was waste in those school.

over crowded classes
No new textbooks
crumbling buildings
No stadium lights for night games
broken band instruments
2 students per computer
etc etc etc

So if this is splurging is going on then I must have missed it.

I would think not, but I wouldn't be shocked with the way football goes in Texas...

I went to the first game at the Allen Texas 60 million dollar stadium. Man you would think that you are at a college stadium. It was crowded the first game because of the hype and two highly ranked teams were playing. But after that, my friend tell me that they have a hard time filling that stadium on a regular basis.

They make money for lots of people. Vendors, restaurants, hotel/motels, gas stations, apparel makers, etc. not just the school system.

The one we have is used by several schools and is rented out to semi-pro and other teams.

It would seem things have changed over the last 20 years or so, haven't they?
