1.8M-year-old skull gives glimpse of our evolution

DMANISI, Georgia (AP) — The discovery of a 1.8-million-year-old skull of a human ancestor buried under a medieval Georgian village provides a vivid picture of early evolution and indicates our family tree may have fewer branches than some believe, scientists say.The fossil is the most complete pre-human skull uncovered. With other partial remains previously found at the rural site, it gives researchers the earliest evidence of human ancestors moving out of Africa and spreading north to the rest of the world, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science.
The skull and other remains offer a glimpse of a population of pre-humans of various sizes living at the same time — something that scientists had not seen before for such an ancient era. This diversity bolsters one of two competing theories about the way our early ancestors evolved, spreading out more like a tree than a bush.

And yet some believe the above is all just a fairy tale .....

Skull discovery suggests early man was single species

Washington (AFP) - A stunningly well-preserved skull from 1.8 million years ago offers new evidence that early man was a single species with a vast array of different looks, researchers said.

With a tiny brain about a third the size of a modern human's, protruding brows and jutting jaws like an ape, the skull was found in the remains of a medieval hilltop city in Dmanisi, Georgia, said the study in the journal Science.

It is one of five early human skulls -- four of which have jaws -- found so far at the site, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the capital Tbilisi, along with stone tools that hint at butchery and the bones of big, saber-toothed cats.

Lead researcher David Lordkipanidze, director of the Georgian National Museum, described the group as "the richest and most complete collection of indisputable early Homo remains from any one site."

These scientists are idiots:

The medieval era wasn't 1.8 million years ago, you can't have an ancient skull in an old village, it makes no sense. Betcha these people do global warming theories in their spare time.

Taking just that one sentence, that's not what they're saying at all.

Just because the skull was found UNDER a medieval city doesn't mean they're saying the skull is of a medieval time period.

Or it could be the village and the skull are from different time periods and that is why it was buried underneath the village. Something being buried under the village might mean just under the surface to miles down and without them saying one way or the other you shouldn't assume anything.

I think he was kidding.

Try re-reading the quote..

Nonsense! Man was made of mud from Adam, and Eve was made of his rib! This happened 6000 years ago and before that nothing ever existed irrelevant to fossil data that show that contrary! I shall just stick to this belief blindly no matter these devilish findings show me to.

If it is not in the religious books I shall not believe it, period! Evolution is not in religious books hence a true believer should not resort to plagiarism and adopt parts of scientific findings just to fit the views!
=======================

I am struggling to act like a religious guy here. How am I doing? Any good or is it the case where the true me cannot help but prevail?

Few of us think like that. So you go...

Perhaps it was god's skull.

You misread. It says that the skull was found under a medieval village. Is it really that surprising that some tiny village in Georgia (the country) has been abandoned for a few hundred years? Didn't think so.

Oh my god. I bet car salesmen just love when you walk onto the lot.

Spud is spud

This is a really cool find. I just looked it up - it was published this week in Science. On the cover.

I bet Science Friday on NPR will have something on it.

What the real finding here seems to be is that they have an array of skulls, all from the same time, and all a bit different because of age, etc. But the features are similar to a few different species found around the world - China, etc - that have been tentatively classified as different species. But this finding shows that Homo Erectus was probably the dominant, worldwide (old, world, natch) species of proto-humans. So the H. Heidelbergensis, H. Rhodesienses, etc. are probably just variant forms of H. Erectus.

I think there still is a thought that the species somehow died out and bottlenecked after evolving to Homo Sapiens who didnt come out of Africa to repopulate the world until 70k years ago (.07 million years). Gotta wonder how that happened...

Spud successfully trolled a bait thread. It was awesome.

I am Christian but not a young Earth creationist. I beleive in evolution just like everyone else, that is just how God did it. Most of us do.

One does not "believe" in evolution. You either accept it, based on evidence and facts and data and research, or you choose to be deliberately ignorant and not accept the overwhelming proof.
