If the Senate gives in to the GOP blackmail on the debt ceiling, there will be political chaos for years to come. It will open the floodgates of any majority party in the House threatening to shut down the economy whenever they don't like some law or policy they can't overturn by legislation.
So I support the Senate Democrats on this. If the GOP wants to negotiate legislation they lost on, then the Democrats must do the same and require tax hikes for the rich, gun control, and so forth.
You mean like the World Bankers and Koch brothers..I'm curious - do the liberal apologists here on DP not see the hypocrisy of Democrats, including Obama, moaning and groaning that the US will implode if the debt ceiling isn't raised
What IS their latest bill, jcj, in spite of Heritage Action causing it to be pulled??yet they consistently say no to approving a bill from the House to do so that includes any tweaks to the application of the ACA.
Is that you Jim deMint? In other words, the Democrats and the President are saying that the failed and disasterous ACA, a bill that has been badly received, poorly implemented, and waived for a large segment of the population is more important than the financial well being of the nation.
Not that the don't need to negotiate, but they shouldn't. It's political blackmail. But if negotiations are in order then let's negotiate everything -- higher taxes on the rich, gun control, cuts to the military, and so forth.
You can't have your attack on Obamacare and eat it too.
Obama is Preventing a President Christie from this same bat-**** craziness when Dems have the House again in 2016..

House GOP May Cancel Vote | National Review Online
now i don't read national reveiw, but Robert Costa has been pretty accurate in describing what is going on in the republican caucus.
House Debt Ceiling, Government Shutdown Vote Dead: Report
It seems official, the House deal is over before it started.
Some that came out of the meeting stated that the bill from Congress is dead. Thirty republican house members met in a Mexican restaurant and decided over dinner to hold the line on the ACA.
My guess - The House Republican leadership tried to come up with a plan that would give them a little and which if the Senate rejected they would look like the fools. The Thirty that met in the restaurant were having none of it. Their argument, I am guessing - "Hey, if anybody is going to look like a fool it will be us, dammit."
I almost feel sorry for Boehner. Was there ever a more ineffectual dope, trying so hard to prevent the freaks from destroying his party, but too cowardly to actually stand up to them. I emphasize almost.
Pssst: shutdown =/ default.
See the difference?
(by the way, your post is false)
I do see the difference. I reckon you're incensed at Obama for voting against a debt limit increase in '06.
Even PMSNBC says you're wrong.
Why this shutdown is different | MSNBC
I love this rightwing meme. Nobody on the Democratic side threatened to actually force a default. It was a safe vote, for the purpose of registering dissent to Bush's lunacy.
But nice try. I see you have the memo in front of you.
