So here it is. Syria willing to put its cache of chemical weapons under the control of international authorities, with the possibility of future destruction of them with Syria joining the ban. SO...............Kerry said they could avoid US military intervention if they did just that, now then, will this really back the administration up?

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has welcomed Russia’s call to hand control over its chemical weapons to the international community.

“Syria Arab Republic welcomes Russia’s initiative, based on the Syrian’s government care about the lives of our people and security of our country,” Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said in response to the statement by his Russian counterpart.

“We are calling on the Syrian authorities not only agree on putting chemical weapons storages under international control, but also for its further destruction and then joining the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons,” Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier.

Seeing as we dont know exactly what and how many they have. I call it a hollow effort to keep from being bombed.

First of all, a defector has already told the international community that he has 700 tons and 300 delivery rounds. Secondly, it would appear that Assad could make no concession that wouldn't be called insincere, which is what those that are determined on "regime change" would say regardless of what he offers. Once again because, and especially that Russia is the sponsor of this, it would further evidence both Putin and Assad's desire to avoid inflaming the entire region. THIS move is exactly what Kerry said would enable Assad to avoid US military attack. So lets see now if the admin. Mans up.

Ok, now we'll see if this really is about chemical weapons, or if that was just an excuse. The next days will tell. If the US government refused this quasi-capitulation from Assad, it would be proof that the chemical weapons were indeed just an excuse.

Allowing your opponant to bow out gracefully is not manning up.
Let that happen.
But man up and say "Syria has agreed to terms to avoid further US intervention that was not supported by the international community or the people here at home".

This doesn't change the fact that Assad killed tens of thousands of civilians and gassed them. I'll give a crap about his concessions when he agrees to be tried before the ICC.

It may be, but calling it that on an international scale means saying Russia is lying, and until proven wrong (meaning a continued use of such weapons) I think they have more credibility than the dictator in charge here.

I think this just very embarrassing for obummer - and I'm glad. He deserves to be b.Slapped by the international community for calling it "their" red line and not his.

My sense is that the administration would be happy with this result. They may be able to pull back the resolution to use force which was about to be voted down by congress.

Perhaps the Russians were more helpful than people were willing to give them credit for.

The Messoah looks more stupider everyday.

Helpful would have been to do this before he gassed his people. There's not a "free one use" on chems. He killed 10s of 1000s.

Hopefully the Russians are securing the chems, they can have the oil infrastructure and port as well.

Let's remember that Obama DID give a free pass the first (few?) times Assad used gas.

I can't see this Russia ovation pulling back the bombs from flying if Congress okay's it. Yes Russia just provided Obama a way out but the vote will still have to happen. I can't see Obama coming on TV on Tuesday saying "We've struck a deal with Putin, they're going to secure all the chemical weapons and we can all stand down. False alarm guys!" He can't save face that way internationally or domestically. He's going to have to either run this Russian plan through the UN and put UN troops with Russian troops on the ground to get those chems.

But then again, is that something Assad would allow? I don't think so especially not when around him he's still in a seemingly protracted civil war. This sounds good on paper but very difficult to pull off.

Not proven.

And the rebels, authoritarian freedom-hating islamofascists, funded by the West and/or their allies, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, did the same. Really no teapot to win here.

Moderates can assemble a transitional democratic government. With UN funding, foreign aid and investment projects and no sanctions will be development. Or, Assad can keep buying weapons and screw the people.

You're very optimistic. Where do you suggest shall these moderates come from?

Anyway, I don't think any such plan can work without years of foreign full-scale military occupation, and that is neither popular, nor can the West currently afford that.

Moderates have already been wiped out by al queda types running the "revolution" you seem so eager to jump in and support. I don't care for Assad but this isn't our war. There is no threat to the United States here unless we create one by thumping an ally of mother russia and china. The dictating loser human occupying our white house needs to put his foot squarely in his own mouth, tuck his tail between his legs and walk the hell away. OR IMPEACH HIM

There are fine people in Syria, despite the slaughter.

Libya?

Personally I am totally against going to Syria. That said...sounds like an Iran move to me.

Okay, but do they have any influence at all?

You're not suggesting Libya has become an example for Western values and democratic standards after the toppling of Assad, right? Wasn't the first thing they did introducing Sharia law?

My sense is that there will copious claims that Obama "rope-a-doped" for exactly this result.

Of course, what this really amounts to is two allies who are adversaries of the US patting each other on the back for taking advantage of a vacuum in US leadership. This is a classic move from the Cold War.

Kerry is a lying sack of crap who was anti-war until killing a bunch of little brown people furthered his career. Even if they turn over every last chemical weapon, we will still bomb the **** out of them.

Okay, but do they have any influence at all?

With or without being bombed and gassed ~70k in a couple years? It cannot be "ok, dude, we secure the chems and you go right ahead and bomb them. We can stand you bombing a few 10k more, but not gas". Really?

You're not suggesting Libya has become an example for Western values and democratic standards after the toppling of Assad, right? Wasn't the first thing they did introducing Sharia law?

It takes a generation or two to establish a semi-transparent open democracy.

It's not bowing out gracefully, its capitulation, its president Assad meeting the requirement that John Kerry established this weekend. That removes the necessity for a US attack, JOHN KERRY SAID SO!
