Obamacare Will Force One Florida County to Make Nicotine Use Illegal

Not to mention IMO there is no real evidence to support smoking causes cancer.

I think we're done here. :lamo

No need to make it illegal. Just don't hire smokers. It's not like that would be a new trend. Lots of companies won't hire known/admitted smokers.

This is essentially what the county is doing.

Re: I've called this nonsense since day one - The Agenda behind Obamacare.

If the bolded topic is wrong, why not divert to something else that is also wrong?

Yeah, good idea.

No one knows what 'causes' cancer.....

Libertarian quibble-
'they' know what increases the risk factors for lung cancer, OCPD, Hardening of the arteries, emphysema, and throat cancer... smoking is one of the biggest and one of the most voluntary.

I don't see a county deciding to not hire smokers as an attack on penises, Christians, or capitalism. As taxpayers I'd think most good libertarians would approve of saving the taxpayer money.

Long before ACA companies were looking hard at their employees who smoked and potential employees for smoking. this isn't part of a liberal agenda- it is hard analysis of costs related to payroll. there are many things a person can't control, such as genetic predisposition, but voluntarily inhaling the chemical sewer of a burning clump of tobacco...

Disclaimer- I started Smoking in Infantry School, smoked for over 30 years so it isn't like a virgin talking about advanced sex positions- my wife and I saw my decline in health until I gave up smoking. I am not 100% as if I never smoked, but I don't wheeze as I walk... :peace

All your aforementioned symptoms cannot be proven as the result of smoking........

That's why the cigarette pack warning say: "MAY cause cancer" and not "DO cause cancer" because such a claim cannot be proven..... It's not even in the realm of theory yet that smoking causes cancer...

More quibble- the warnings were watered down to avoid the long drawn out fight with big tobacco over what they would be 'forced' to put on their product packaging.

But back to what I REALLY said- the factors i listed increase the risk factors for cancer. Proven time and time again. I NEVER said causes cancer- but it has been proven repeatedly to greatly increase the risk.

Now back to the title of this hot mess... the County officials didn't make nicotine illegal- they just refuse to hire those who voluntarily increase their heath costs and expect others to help foot the insurance bill.

Sounds like responsible government to me.... :2wave:

What a hollywerid move - you should pitch that to the folks in Hollyweird....

Sorry If I dare to think on the outside looking in....

Maybe government just want excessive revenue from a habit they deem 'bad?'

You have to pay for your Obamaphones and people locked in jail for pot - not to mention lawsuits with some form of revenue???

What a better way than to demonize a product..... Next is the cheeseburger - oh never mind Moochelle is on that one.... It's all about the $$$$$$$$.... Speed cameras, red light cameras - for "your own good" I suppose...

It needs to be called what it is HERITAGE CARE. They started it.
When Repubs ever put up a plan it will look a lot like the ACA.

Regardless of how fascist the RINO's are I don't see them putting up a socialist healthcare plan...

That is not how our economy works and that is not how health care works in the United States...

The movie has been made- "The Insider" with Russel Crowe.

You are not thinking while looking in, more like way out in left field. What 'excessive' revenue does this Florida county want? They are refusing to hire smokers. "they" didn't deem smoking bad- the medical research crowd did.

What in THE hell do phones and pot laws have to do with smoking cigarettes and counties refusing to hire smokers? You make no sense.

Actually some PRIVATE companies are looking at overall employee health and the costs. Body Mass Index scores and Smoking, both are highly voluntary states in the PRIVATE SECTOR- again the bad ol' Gubmint isn't taking away your bacon cheeseburger or pack of smokes- just not wanting your sickly ass working for them.

Speed cameras, red light cameras, pot laws.... NONE of those things ahve a damn thing to do with the cost taxpayers bear for self abusing government employees.

You don't wish to 'suffer' under the draconian Florida county Government- don't work for them! :doh

One might argue our healthcare system isn't working very well.

No one knows what 'causes' cancer.....

So are you quibbling over semantics or do you honestly believe there's no evidence that cigarette smoking greatly increases your odds of getting lung cancer?
