Maybe we should pay them with all that money we sent to big banks, and the UAW *cough cough* I mean the auto companies.

But you are right of course, I would be happy to cut the food stamps program and restrict the qualifications for the disability program in order to pay these scientists. How are you always so smart?

My point is that the U.S. used to be the bastion of science and technology. Now we are alienating the very lifeblood that immigrated here to build our nation.

The hatred for intellectuals is growing sharply.

No usually the scientist that receive grant money follow the status quo and subject their work for corporate interest. An example albert szent-gyorgyi the man who discovered vitamin C could not get a dime from the government. Why, because his research was not "acceptable". Face the facts, your niece is mediocre......

Intellectuals have always been "hated" by non-intellectuals here. What has stemmed innovation has been the SCOTUS and their bungling of copyright law and the public domain. The public domain is what gave our country it's great edge in innovation, built that spirit. The last century has been a story of the SCOTUS neutering the public domain and strangling it near death.

You have that reversed. The ones going for the government grant money are the ones who can't get private funding. Generally because the subject matter won't yield monetary profits.

I can accept my neice being mediocre (thought I doubt she is) - she gets paid. :mrgreen:

The idea that corporate funding is the way to go certainly is telling as to your understanding of useful unbiased research. You probably think getting a grant from Exxon on global warming research is a good idea.

Key word may be "contemplate." You hear this same thing from the wealthy every time there is a threat to raise taxes. It is generally overstated. Luckily for the U.S., few places where these people might enjoy living are paying any more for research at the moment.

Knownothingism is the goal of conservatism and science is a threat to that.

Just so you know, Currie, Edison and Ford were all working with materials that could be purchased at local mom and pop stores in the 19th century. Try getting your hands on what scientists use in a lab today at 19th century prices. Science is extremely expensive today. An MRI machine can set you back a cool 150K. A seismograph? $6-7K. A balancing machine? $10K. Yeah, you go on believing that 19th century scientists could have carried out their work at today's prices.

Conservatives are against education, sense when, it is the democrats that are against education and allow the no teach teacher unions teach our kids into stupidly. Every hear of the voucher system to get our kids out from under the no teach teachers unions. Yes that is a republican idea to get our kids a good education that you progressives hate, because our kids will lean something rather than be dependent on the government dole that you progressives want everyone to be on. Dependent on a Government headed by a stupid Obama that has no clue about anything. Talk about an idiot.
