Right as the country commemorates the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, people are flocking to social media to condemn a South Carolina restaurant for its allegedly racist actions.

According to CBS affiliate WCSC-TV, Michael Brown and 24 of his family and friends were at Wild Wing Cafe celebrating his cousin's final day in Charleston, S.C., last month when the group was suddenly told to leave.

The reason? The shift manager allegedly told Brown that a white customer felt "threatened" by his party. When one of Brown's companions started filming the exchange, the shift manager is said to have told the group to leave.

"[That] totally alarmed all of us because we're sitting there peaceably for two hours," Brown told the news outlet.

Wild Wing Cafe Kicks Out 25 African Americans After White Customer Felt 'Threatened': Report

"I had a dream" where restaurants would not turn away black diners who were waiting peacefully for 2 hours to get seated because "1 white customer felt threatened". Sorry, but this is just horrible. The last day's dinner of these people was ruined because of the unreasonable feelings of 1 diner in a restaurant.

I blame the manager for this disaster. She should have reasoned with the "fearful" customer and solved this. This is a public image nightmare for this company due to intolerance and what looks like racism on a weekend that was the 50th anniversary of the march on Washington and one of the most monumental events in the civil rights struggle.

I also wonder, whether the same would have happened if 1 black person had complained he/she felt threatened by a large group of white people.

Of course they wouldn't, it's South Carolina the state that started the Civil War.

There was race involved. If there was a threat or an altercation there would have been police involvement. Some person feeling threatened because they have to sit near black people is pure racism.

Re: Wild Wing Cafe Kicks Out 25 African Americans After White Customer Felt 'Threaten

The article has no details about how the group was acting. They want to give the impression that the other customer felt threatened purely because they were black. However, I've seen multiple instances where a group would describe themselves as acting normal and I would have described them as rather rowdy. There could have also been a particular action or something said by one in the group that triggered the other customer's concern.

Re: Wild Wing Cafe Kicks Out 25 African Americans After White Customer Felt 'Threaten

I see at as a positive that the "threatened" person did not just use the Stand your ground law in SC to wipe out those threatening him..

Two hours is a long time not to turn over 25 seats.

They had been in the restaurant for 2 hours, if they were acting badly they would have been thrown out long before that.

The story from Live5news writes that they were regular customers. There is no indication that they were misbehaving and were just refused because someone felt threatened by the group of black people. The story also says it was 1 guest who felt threatened, if they were an actual threat more diners would have felt threatened and we have no evidence of this happening.

If they have were problem customers they would not have been offered free meals but they would have been told it was your fault so please don't come to our restaurant ever again.

Not necessarily, because it takes someone complaining to initiate asking them to leave.

Being regulars doesn't mean anything. If NBC will doctor a phone call to make it seem racist then I wouldn't put it past anyone to omit key details. If the customer's complaint seemed unreasonable during the event then the manager would have likely ignored it.

If they have were problem customers they would not have been offered free meals but they would have been told it was your fault so please don't come to our restaurant ever again.

People have posted to boycott the restaurant. Of course they are going to offer a free meal and apologize to try and save their business.

There are a lot of places to eat in the USA.

Why would anyone wait two hours to get a meal?

If they were that bad to which they needed to be tossed out and were threatening others the management would have called the police. It is the carolinas, and a rowdy black crowd who was threatening people would be something the police would have dealt with. The reason we know this is BS is because there was no police involvement because calling them for a false report would be a crime. I have been in a similar situation having been thrown out of an AL walmarrt for supposedly flashing a customer while in drag. When their security came up to me and asked me to leave they said a customer had complained i exposed myself to them. I told them they had cameras and if I had done it i would be under arrest and not asked to leave. In m case the situation went further as i complained as i left and they decided to call the police and tell them I was drunk and flashing people. That resulted in some charges and some firings at the store. You have to have a good reason to call the police, and a rowdy group of threatening black people would be a reasonable thing to call about if they were threatening. That is why they did not call because there was no threat.

I never wait, if I go to a resturant and I have to wait in line or if I have to have a seat and wait for a table, I move on to the next resturant. Before I will stand in line or wait for a table, I'll go to Burger King first. It is like Yogi Berra said, "No one goes there anymore, its too crowded."

I had exactly the same thought.

The White dude who was standing his ground in this story could have whipped out his Uzi and sent all of those threatening 'others' to their maker.

So I guess that we could say that this could have tuned out a lot worse.

I could say a lot more, but I'll just leave it at that for now.

If your establishement has a beer/liquor license then you are very reluctant to call the police to your location. The number of disturbance calls to police is a matter of public record and can affect the keeping/renewal of that important license on which your business depends. This is why many such establishments spend their own money on private security/bouncers.

You're naively acting like anything not requiring calling 911 for the police is acceptable behavior. In many cases, it's better for both parties if issues can be resolved without involving the police. It can be as simple as asking somebody politely to leave.

Since I asked first, I expect to see the proof that I asked for first.

Once I see that, I'll think (Not hard.) about providing proof that it didn't happen.

Don't hold your breath while you're waiting for it.

I didn't say anything specific happened. My point is that you're naively assuming we've got the whole story when we've heard one side. I guess you didn't learn from the TM case that the whole story doesn't always come out when reported.

I am telling you, a business owner with rowdy customers who are threatening each other and are legitimately a danger to be together calls the police. What happened here was someone said they were loud and obnoxious and they felt uncomfortable. I have no doubt the group was loud. If a group is too loud and rowdy to go to a place you do not say a customer felt threatened you tell them that they are too rowdy to be seated. you are really stretching this to try and excuse it and say it is not racism and it clearly is. If a group of 25 people were so rowdy the waitress could no sit them and they were told to leave that sort of group would have hung in until the police came. What this group did was leave peacefully. That is downright wrong.
