In a major national security speech this spring, President Obama said again and again that the U.S. is at war with “Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and their associated forces.”So who exactly are those associated forces? It’s a secret.
At a hearing in May, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., asked the Defense Department to provide him with a current list of Al Qaeda affiliates.
The Pentagon responded – but Levin’s office told ProPublica they aren’t allowed to share it. Kathleen Long, a spokeswoman for Levin, would say only that the department’s “answer included the information requested.”
A Pentagon spokesman told ProPublica that revealing such a list could cause “serious damage to national security.”
“Because elements that might be considered ‘associated forces’ can build credibility by being listed as such by the United States, we have classified the list,” said the spokesman, Lt. Col. Jim Gregory. “We cannot afford to inflate these organizations that rely on violent extremist ideology to strengthen their ranks.”

Apparently these days and age we cant eve know who we are at war with anymore.. Talk about a secret state...

Unfortunately, Lt. Col. Gregory's description of the situation is correct.

The best recruitment tool many of these groups have, is to be able to confirm that they are in our cross-hairs. Giving them the ability to recruit more nut-blades is not in our best interest. Keeping them small and vulnerable is.

Sad... but true none-the-less.

Please. Engaging them militarily is what is recruiting them.

Not really. Our breathing, and flourishing, and, well, being free (Infidels)... That is what is recruiting them.

Never underestimate the recruitment power of a cultist vein of a religion.

Been to a Pentecostal Holiness Church lately? Scary folks... The only difference is the lack of suicide bombers. But, its early yet. Give them time, you never know?

Haha. That's a classic Bush-ism.

So what inspired muslims to travel and fight in Afghanistan against the Soviets and in Bosnia?

Could it be that other muslims were being killed? Hmm...

Tell me you didn't type that with a straight face.

There are numerous countries out there filled with breathing, flourishing, and free infidels. But those countries don't engender their hatred. Could it be because they aren't building bases in Muslim countries and blowing up Muslims by remote control?

I know, it is a crazy theory.

Bush-ism? Classic denialist attack of desperation. What the heck does Bush have to do with this discussion? I thought the President is Barrack Obama, and it's his current Administration making the statement we're discussing here.

And, your arguments is a non-sequitur. And also, for the record, Radical Islamist and/or Islamic Terrorists... are not the same as Muslims. Just in case no one has pointed that out to you before.

You don't know me. What a stretch to juxtapose the term Bush-ism on, well... me. LOL

No. I had a straight face. It was a very narrow description of a very complex issue. For that I cry mea culpa.

True. They are pissed that we have troops on their soil. And yes, it has to do with oil. And yes again, we have been involved in bad things their. But... to limit the description of why they hate us to your description is just as limited an argument.

These people live in a 7th Century society that's still pissed over the Crusades.

As I said, it's a very complex discussion, that no one will ever agree upon. Even the Islamist Extremists can't agree on exactly why they hate us. Hate us today that is. All I ever hear is the transgression du jour. Tomorrow it will be something else. Palestine, Israel, Somalia, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, the Balkans, Indonesia, or some other location around the world that they feel we should get out of.

There are many troops from many countries here in the US. Right now. I don't see people strapping bombs to their chests here and killing women and children to get them out of the US?

We have an economic interest in most countries of the world. Now, if we want to completely change our economy, reduce our personal incomes to the level that many of these other countries population barely survives on, then maybe, just maybe, we could pull out of the world, become a completely protectionist nation, like we tried in the early 1900's, and then see what happens.

Based on my years around the world, I seriously doubt it would make a difference.

Funny how the groups that are demanding that we get out of the world, are the same ones that want their paychecks to be increased and prices reduced. That old Sesame Street song keeps coming to mind... 'One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong..."

I don't understand how a nation can be at war with terrorist groups as if we were fighting a foreign nation or engaged in a civil war. My understanding of the Constitution indicates that only Congress has the power to declare war. To the best of my knowledge Congress has never declared war on Al Qaeda, the Taliban, or their "associated forces" whatever that means.

Then again I don't understand how we can be at war with consumer products (ala "The War on Drugs") either. Go figure.

It is amazing the logic gymnastics people will go through to justify a war against a people they hate, and the number of rights and protections they will sacrifice to keep up that war. Thank you, you have shown us a good reason why the government has been allowed to get away with this insanity.

Our clandestine and unaccountable government, and the corporate interests they champion, are far more dangerous to the American people than any foreign threat could ever hope to be.

Don't you understand these desert people are learning how to swim, and clearly when you look at a globe they only have to swim less than a foot to get across the atlantic so WE ARE DOOMED! They are all going to swim over here with their machine guns and pressure cookers and take all of our rights away if we do not immediately surrender every right we have to the federal government so they can stop them. Look at them, they cannot control a country smaller than many of our states, but when they get over here watch out they will force us all to wear burkas and pray to allah in mosques. We all know our government is one of the most believable and trustworthy in the world and they only have our best interests in mind so they would never lie and use the extra powers we give them to do things like persecute people they do not like, intimidate and silence any press that gets out of line, or declare war on terrorists groups based on constitutionally protected free speech because everyone they ever go after is a terrorist as we see in gitmo. It is not like we have given up our freedoms and protections to the muslims, we have given them up to the US government and they are only right in our bedrooms and not thousands of miles away in some desert without any means of getting here like those magical terrorists we are at war with. Your fears are completely unfounded. Now if you do not mind i have to go pray to my corporate gods because my father forgot to last week and we have not seen him since.

And WE'RE tolerating answers like that from OUR government.

Who's supposed to be the boss(es) in this equation?

As Oliver Stone has put it recently, the question is not "do you have something to hide?", the question is whether we control the government, or the government controls us.

I totally agree with this, we elect or at least have a role in getting EVERY member of Congress, the President, the VP, the President's cabinet (by voting the President in). If you or the people don't like it make a change.

Hahahah. Literally, "they hate us for our freedom." You bought that?

Tell that to a 9-11 widow!!

Blame the socialists and liberals, they like big powerful secret government.

Lot of socialists in the GOP who voted for the patriot act and this NSA mass-spying thing...

... or any ideology.

But yes... that's it, you've solved it. Amazing! They are such radical nut-jobs they just look the other way when we fund and arm proxy wars against them, covertly remove democratic gov'ts then install and support brutal dictators in their place, denying them their own resources for generations, and on and on... obviously none of that bothers them at all... They hate us because we're freeeeeee..... ROFLMMFAO

As Oliver Stone has put it recently, the question is not "do you have something to hide?", the question is whether we control the government, or the government controls us.

Well, if a person so chooses, they can go back through the annuals of our history and discover that our government divulges very little information to us in comparison to what they keep hidden away from our collective purview. Questions are asked by us but rarely are they answered. This all happens under the influence of our money - taken from our hardwork - to finance their secretive ways in which they keep us in the dark. So, we are very much at their mercy, for they control information and knowledge.
