Paula Deen Fired[W:223]

I wonder how many who are simply aghast at what she said have no problem with the countless deaths of unborn children for convenience every day?

No one cares about dead feti.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

So did Jessie James...and other bad people. Some people love to love villains. I can think of a lot of very bad people who were made into folk heroes.

Yep. I wonder if Biden still has a problem with convenience store operators?

Did anyone watch her breakdown on the today show this morning?

Try to keep up. This isn't about abortion. This is about Paula Deen and whether or not she should have been fired for her racist comments.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

The only reason Deen is sooooooooo upset: She got caught. She's a bigot and racist. And if the truth could be had, Ms. Deen, in all likelihood, has no true remorse, shame, or guilt for her actions.

She wasn't even crying this morning. No tears were shed on her Today show interview. She went through the motions of crying, but never actually cried.

You mean her fakedown? Yeah I saw it.

crocodile tears

noun
1.
( used with a plural verb ) a hypocritical show of sorrow; insincere tears (or no tears at all).

So, tell me. How do you feel about Robert Byrd and Hugo Black? How about LBJ. All racists and two members of the Klan. Good democrats all. And how about Biden's comments about convenience store owners? Hymie Town, and diamond merchants? I don't think I'm too concerned about Paula Deen one way or the other.

Good grief have you seen her face? She can't cry, even if she could she knows she'd look like Tammy Faye.

If you aren't concerned, excuse yourself from the thread and go find a thread to complain about Obama or something. Sheesh. You don't know me, so you shouldn't talk about something you know nothing about. I am not a Democrat OR a Republican. I don't condone racism of ANY form, from anybody, no matter what letter they have beside their name.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) – Advance orders for Paula Deen’s new cookbook have surged since the Food Network and Smithfield Foods axed her for using a racial slur.

Orders for “Paula Deen’s New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up” surged on Amazon by nearly 1,300% in the last 24 hours.

A spokesperson for Random House, which is publishing Deen’s upcoming book, “Paula Deen’s New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up,” similarly told People magazine it is “monitoring the situation closely.” The book is scheduled to come out in October.

See I was under the impression the book was already published. Now Random House is "monitoring the situation closely," as is QVC. It's possible (not bloody likely) but possible that it will not get published, and she'll have to find a new publisher.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

That is absolutely preposterous. If you allow the use of the word nigger by some in a certain context, not allowing its use in the same benign context in other races is racism.

It's not a benign context if used by other races, by definition - unless used as a criticism of its usage. Dropping the N-bomb if you're black doesn't indicate that you think black people are inferior, but if you're white and you drop it, there's a good chance that you look down on blacks.

It's not "racism" (the word you're looking for is discrimination, BTW), since every other race can use their own pertinent slurs.

Doesn't context matter?

Re: Paula Deen Fired

Sure, start here. And if you look around B listers everywhere are starting to come out to defend her. There are folks who think she's a cooking goddess and this isn't going to get them to back away.

Any sponsors she loses will either return when the heat dies down or will be replaced by others.

Sounds like she has a shot at not getting creamed, but this is not A Good Thing for her. I don't see how she benefits in any way from this. The advance sales of her books are from people who were going to buy her book anyway. People at her restaurant do not add up to big money, and it's not like they're going to keep coming forever.

All the rest is basically that some of her sponsors are going to stick by her. That doesn't increase her business; It's just keeps her where she was already (minus the sponsors who are dropping her as well as those who may drop her in the future)

Re: Paula Deen Fired

You seem to have either missed or ignored the gist of the dilemma we were discussing Gimme_

Which is, racial harmony will only be realized when society becomes intolerant of all racists, regardless of color_

You don't appear to have reached that level of intolerance quite yet but don't feel bad, you're certainly not alone_
Heaven forbid we reach a point of total INTOLERANCE towards racists, where in the world would those young girls with ideas of their inherent superiority hide?

If orders are that good, she likely won't have much trouble. The bottom line here is the dollar speaks, and what these companies are doing is making bets on what the long term profitability from deen is.

Nothing really "moral" about any of it

lol, while "nigga" is more popular in common usage among African Americans, "nigger" is definitely still used and in no way meant to be non-derogatory. With that in mind, does it make logical sense that white people can't use it? No, but social convention hardly ever does

The only people I feel superior to are the ones, regardless of their race, who do not think for themselves_

If you ever break free of the PC that shapes your views and judgement, I might even consider you an equal_

It does make "logical" sense when you realize that a white person using the term invokes centuries of oppression in a way that a black person using the term does not.

Nope, it's bloodless business.

If I had to guess, I'd say that absent any additional revelations, the book will be published. Even if there is some additional bad press, I don't think they'd cancel it. At most, they might delay the release date. After all, they publish books written by murderers. Paula has a following, and the book will make some amount of money

However, the idea that she's going to do "better than ever" because she said the n-word is hard to swallow. She does have a loyal fan base, but I doubt that her vocabulary has added to it. The people who are buying her book are people who were going to buy the book anyway. They pre-ordered her book to show support, but they were going to buy it anyway. No one is buying the book simply because she said the n-word. IOW, it doesn't represent any increase in income.

Her being dropped from FN is a big blow. It was a platform that kept her in the public eye, and gave her the opportunity to promote her products. Though she keep many, or even most of her endorsements, it's going to be harder for her to get additional endorsements going into the future.

Sure, a black person is going to use the N-bomb to degrade himself...?

Like I said, context matters. Words are different - even slightly different - when used by different people in different situations.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

No, he's using it to degrade other black people. Do you think Chris Rock wasn't using it in a derogatory manner, that called on a number of negative stereotypes in his "black vs Nigger" skit?

Like I said, context matters.

Which I agree with. But you can find many instances of nigger being used in a very stereotypical and derogatory manner by black people
