Paula Deen Fired[W:223]

Firing someone for apparently using he 'n' word years ago (which is my understanding of what happened) is being PC.
What someone says or does on their own time (providing it is legal) is none of your employer's business.
She was a cook after all...not a preacher.

In this case, I realize that PC correctness is pathetically important to TV producers...so firing her was probably a given.
But I still say it is none of their business.

Decent human being's don't fire people for what they legally do in their private lives.
It may have been fiscally prudent of them to fire her - but it had little/nothing to do with decency, IMO.

If you think most entertainment producers do things out of decency - you are extremely naive.
They probably fired her for greed and profit...no other reason (IMO).

So the Catholic Church isnt decent humans. Got it.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

You don't tolerate it from others? How you going to prevent it? With more hatred or are you going to overcome it with love and tolerance?

Listen to Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr sometime. Never heard them preach about fighting hate with hate. Trust me, I have ways of showing my disdain for racism but its not with stupidity.

am I going to love racists and become tolerant towards them? No.

I don't even hate them I just don't associate myself with them, I don't give them the time of day.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

Some stupid cook got fired from her show for saying the 'N' word?

Sadly PC, but overall, I don't really care.

beign PC isn't always a bad thing you realise? Many are offended by the N word and they watch the food network so it makes sense for a company to want to distance themselves from her.

I didn't say it made bad economic sense. It was probably economically prudent.

But I regret that the world is so PC.

I am not offended by the 'n' word. I pity the idiots who are racist enough to use it. But it does not offend me.

I believe free speech is an absolute right that should never be squashed in any way.

(too bad this board does not think the same way)

And I later objected to someone saying they fired her/refused to renew her contract out of decency.

They did it for greed, IMO...no other reason.

You may not be offended by the N word for millions of other people including millions of black people worldwide the N word represents a dark period of history where their people were stolen, displaced around the globe and became slaves for white imperialism. The word itself was used instead of names, it was used to put them down and kept them in bondage. Free speech is alive and well and no charges will be filed against the women but employers have the right to get rid of anyone who acts in such a way and damages the brand. The "PC" problem is massive in western culture especially when it comes to Christian holidays like Xmas etc but this isn't a case of typical "PC" bull**** this is a women who see's herself as higher than a whole race of people and used a word which has plagued American history. Posters can brush it off as much as they want but the N word has no place in modern society.

Imo, EVERY word has a place in modern society...no matter how stupid/ignorant/erroneous it is.

A truly modern society is one where any word can be spoken without fear of persecution in any way.

And a truly advanced society would not be offended by a simple word. It's citizens would have the advanced intellect/maturity to realize that to be immediately offended by the utterance of a single word is simplistic and emotionally immature.

Saying the 'n' word should not on it's own be offensive. For instance, if a child states it without knowing it's meaning.

It should only be offensive when the intent of the user of the word is known to be a negative one.

The offense should be of the intent - not the word.

Don't understand your reasoning here, how can a society progress and move on when it hangs on to words from the past which represent persecution and slavery? Intent is irrelevant but in this particular case very clear however the word itself comes from a dark place in human history and should not be tolerated.

How you can say that someone that says the 'n' word without any knowledge of it's meaning is as offensive as someone who says it with full knowledge of it's meaning is totally beyond me and - no offense - seems ridiculous.

But that is what you think and I highly doubt you will change your mind.

And there is virtually NO WAY you will change my mind on this...so further discussion is pointless.

Good day.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

I thought the non renewal of her contract is due to a hostile work environment. Is it really because of the N word 20 years ago?

Re: Paula Deen Fired

Additionally, there is NO word in the English language (or any other that I am aware of) that offends me in the slightest.

The intent that they are used is another matter.

And if others are so ridiculously touchy that the mere hearing of a word, even when spoken without the slightest intention of ill will, offends them; then tough...get over it.

Bothers them - I get that.

But offends them - that's too thin-skinned.

Especially when 'blacks' I know/knew use/used the 'n' word semi-constantly without it seeming to bother them in the slightest. They often laugh when it's spoken.

Sorry, no double standards because I have less melanin then them.

If they can say it - so can I...period.

Let's do an experiment.

Use the word proudly today and see how many thin skinned people get offended.

Do it as a real person in real life not someone hiding behind a screen and fake name.

Don't be ridiculous - you knew exactly what I meant or you are pretty ignorant.

I never said I would - I said if they can, so can I.

If they are allowed to - so should I be allowed to...duh.

Why on Earth would I want to?

Use that mushy thing in your head more often.

My point is that words being restricted to persons strictly on the melanin content of their skin is wrong.

Did you understand that - or do need that further explained as well Capt Estrogen? Sorry - captainawesome.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

I don't know if SHE'S done any bitching, but there's plenty going on on her behalf. Seriously, who cares, FN didn't renew Paula Deen's contract because they don't want her representing them. That's what it boils down to.

It's funny how some people on some threads will say that an employer should be able to fire an employee at will, that they can pick and choose their employees, yet sometimes they seem confused by their own ideologies. Not you per se, but just some people.

One trend on FN that I have noticed over the last several years is an obvious attempt by ownership to expand the audience to the minority viewer. They have added several shows with African American or minority hosts and are working hard to change the demographic beyond the white suburban foodie.

I wonder if this played a role in the decision to no longer employ Deen?

I understand you talk big, but can't walk big.

I understand you talk big, but can't walk big.

So your idea of walking big is running around using a word that offends people, that I have ZERO reason to use nor do I even agree with?

Noted.

What's your next brilliant dare - going up to women and calling them sluts?

Or huge men and calling them spineless wimps?

Or police officers and calling them pigs?

Have a nice day Capt. Estrogen.

sorry -er - captainawesome.

Re: Paula Deen Fired

When instance like this one pop up we need to keep in mind the people that do the show cancelling and firing are not doing it because they good, decent people. They do it for ratings. Odd that you never hear them admit that fact. Why not take a head count of the ratio of blacks to whites on the holy Food Network? So what if she said the nigger word and isnt using the phrase "The N word" the same as saying "nigger". Isn't it the intent of the user? If I called your mother a slut would it be different if i called the S word? We are a stupid society trying ever so desperately to try to cover up some truths about ourselves. We have labels for every type of person born in to this world. Ask a black person how many whites use the word nigger.

Boycott The Food Network Channel

Re: Paula Deen Fired

It could be argued that Hillarys callous disregard for Arabs in her Middle East policy of exterminating civillians on a massive scale in Libya and Syria is similar to Nazis blatant human rights violations, which viewed other races as inferior and inconsequential.

Don't forget - Hillary did vote and support the war in Iraq.

This thread is about Paula Deen. Try to pay attention.

This was probably just a convenient excuse. Her star power's been flagging and Food Network had already moved in a different direction.

Or it's just about the PC police being out to get Conservatives. I haven't decided which yet.

So you do realise that word is offensive after all.

Well, ignoring the existence of a word does little to change or address the past. Also, as mentioned previously, if someone lacks the basic ability to parse the context surrounding it's use, that's more their failure, than my own.

Why should anyone be forced to cater to stupidity?

Let's do an experiment.

Use the word proudly today and see how many thin skinned people get offended.

You're appealing to a popular reaction to something to establish legitimacy. Which might be the dumbest argument possible. Being that all manner of things may offend the majority, while lacking any real basis for such.

Hell, 20 years ago, the overwhelming majority was offended by homosexuality and atheism.

So you do realise that word is offensive after all.

Captain, I suggest cracking a book on basic logic. If I called some ignorant redneck or piece of ghetto trash "a Homo sapien" they would likely be offended. But ignorant reactions hardly serve as proof of anything, and obviously context matters
