'I don't care what you do with it': Hidden camera catches wireless company employees passing out 'Obama phones' to people who say they'll sell them for drugs, shoes, handbags, spending cash | Mail Online

The 'Lifeline' free-cell-phone scheme cost $2.2 BILLION last year alone, all of it from fees added to the phone bills of paying customers

The biggest beneficiary other than low-income consumers is billionaire Carlos Slim Helu, whose TracFone has collected $1.5 BILLION to date

One company told MailOnline it will fire a salesperson who laughed uproariously when a woman said she would sell her phone to buy shoes

Conservative firebrand James O'Keefe sent undercover actors to pose as 'Obama phone' seekers aiming to sell the goods; no one turned them down

Legislation in Congress would remove the cell phone component of the program, which launched in 1984 and covered only land lines until 2008

Nice one... a trifecta of hate.

1) Obama is slammed for something he never did.
2) Mexicans and blacks are slammed as leeches to society
3) The worlds second richest man is slammed for making money.. but he is Mexican (see nr 2) and dares to challenge the US in its god given right of being nr 1-5 of any ranking.

/clap.....

1) Obama expanded the program to cellphones which is how the program is being abused
2) Don't project your racism onto me. Own it.
3) Who slammed him? Facts are the facts

Your emotions don't = facts

i look forward to seeing your suggestions how this program can be improved to eliminate the prospect of exchanging government furnished assistance, phones, bus passes, food stamps, drugs for other items the recipients want more than the federal assistance

or are you only going to point to failings that have existed as long as the human race as a basis to rant about Obama

love the term "Obamaphone", despite the OP's article telling us the emergency phone program was begun during the ronnie raygun regime and expanded to include cell phones during the dicknbush reign of terror

1) Obama expanded the program to cellphones which is how the program is being abused

Because we are in the 21st century now... where cellphones outnumber normal phones?

2) Don't project your racism onto me. Own it.

Not projecting anything... facts are facts.

Yea and it is convenient that the facts happen to be around the rights second most hated ethnicity... the Latino...

Right here is where I decided this wasn't seriouis:

Conservative firebrand James O'Keefe sent undercover actors to pose as 'Obama phone' seekers aiming to sell the goods; no one turned them down

Please. O'Keefe baits people and that represents reality to you? :lamo

Besides, we all know that nobody ever abused a government program when the President was a Republican...

From the article you didn't read

The Lifeline program began in 1984, before cell phones were commercially widespread. Since mobile phones were added to the program in 2008, a Vitter spokesman told MailOnline, costs related to non-land line phones have increased twelve-fold.

The program was expanded to cellphones only recently which is how the program is being abused. People who are getting free phones have nicknamed this program the "Obamaphone". This rampant fraud has been going on for years unchecked on Obama's watch.

I find it absolutely hilarious and amazing that you're asking me how this program could be reformed. Why don't you try and use some critical thinking skills.

You also admit why Socialism always fails. As PeteEU said in his post where he called blacks and hispanics "leeches to society", a trifecta

Because we are in the 21st century now... where cellphones outnumber normal phones?

Obviously to prevent massive fraud and abuse it wasn't necessary to expand this program to cellphones when a land line will do just fine to setup a job interview.

Not projecting anything... facts are facts.

Right the fact is you called blacks and hispanics "leeches to society"

Why would you make such a racist statement

Yea and it is convenient that the facts happen to be around the rights second most hated ethnicity... the Latino...

What does his race have to do with this? Your obsession with race is disturbing and you're dangerously close to derailing this thread with your histrionics

Right here is where I decided this wasn't seriouis:

Wait are you excusing and rationalizing this fraud? You're going to sit there on your house of cards, roll your eyes, and excuse outright theft from hard working Americans because you don't like Republicans? Save the Republican vs Democrat Bush blaming for someone who cares about that. I don't.

I don't really care what your opinion of O'Keefe is. Doesn't change the video where clearly outright fraud and abuse is shown to be rampant in this program.

The source is irrelevant--it happens or it doesn't. Anybody who believes that people who would shoot someone for $5 wouldn't sell their Obamaphone suffer from a special kind of denial. Probably nothing we could do to ever stop it that will prevent them from doing something else equally bad or worse, but that is the reality. For some people, welfare is an extortion payment to keep them from doing worse.

from your inability to respond with ways to mitigate the abuse of federal assistance programs i can only conclude you wanted to use this as an opportunity to rant because you have no proposed solutions
color me surprised

snopes.com: Free 'ObamaPhones' for Welfare Recipients

The government does not supply free phones.
It was not expanded by Obama.
Obama implemented a review and reform to reduce the cost of the program.

Source is a bunch of lies.

Snopes.com really? Some review and reform if the program has skyrocketed in price by more than 12 times since 2008.

From the article:

Look I expect all the Obama worshipers to come in here and rationalize this. We get it. Waste, Fraud and Abuse is acceptable to you when Obama does it.

You didn't read my post anymore than you read the article. I did propose a simple way to mitigate the rampant fraud. You don't want solutions. All you are going to do is defend your GodKing Obama. We get it.

Yes, because when Bush expanded the program to include cell phones, the cost skyrocketed. Bush of course made no effort to reform the program. Obama...: http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-312210A1.pdf

Sorry you can't get your facts right.

Step away from the past and get with the present. It's embarrassing. The program was expanded to cellphones in 2008. Bush left office in 2008. in 2012 the costs of the program had exceeded 2B a year and increased in cost by 12 times. That expansion and skyrocketing cost didn't happen under Bush. It happened under Obama's watch. Hell, you even admit this happened under Obama's watch after he "instituted reforms". What does that say about his competency to reign in and clamp down on Government Programs that are out of control? What does that say about the efficiency and accountability of Liberalism and Big Government Socialism? Don't worry I know you won't answer. You'll just scream Bush until you're blue in the face.

I'm really not interested in the usual Obama worshipers twisting themselves in pretzels defending everything Obama does and blaming Bush anymore. Step away from the past and get with the present.

The BushPhones provide a very limited amount of free minutes.

The rest are on the dime of the user.

Actually the detractors of the mobile phone program started the 'Obamaphone' tag. The program to include mobile phones was discussed and approved under BushII, the first program starting 3 months BEFORE Obama was elected President.

I can buy a Tracphone for 14 bucks, not sure just how much of a shoe or bag I can buy with that...

These phones have little if any value to a drug dealer, he can get far better burn phones for just a few bucks more- it is obvious Bronson has not seen these phones because he would know how big a joke it is to try and exchange one for anything.

I wonder how much tape O'Keefe had to erase because the salesman said, "Just go away!" ???

No, Bush left office in 2009. Again, you cannot get your facts right. The reason the cost went up is that Bush expanded the program. Obama, in response, reformed it to cut costs.

Right 3 months before Obama was elected President. He's had 4+ years to get it right. Even after a previous poster hilariously admitted he "instituted reforms" the program cost more than 2B last year alone, exploding in cost by more than 12 times, lining the pockets of crony corporate fat cats. That's an massive expansion of the program that has happened under Obama's watch. One thing that seems to be missing in all this knee jerk "Bush's fault" bleeting is actual outrage from Obama Supporters that hard working Americans are getting ripped off.

I can buy a Tracphone for 14 bucks, not sure just how much of a shoe or bag I can buy with that...

I'm sure you know how much drugs you can get with it

Like I was saying. From the article:

'It's kind of like, the first thing that I do is this here,' the TerraCom rep responded, referring to the required paperwork. 'And unfortunately there are people on drugs. They get this phone, and they go get $40. ... You basically do whatever you want to do with it. That's what I'm trying to tell you.'

No, Bush left office in 2009. Again, you cannot get your facts right. The reason the cost went up is that Bush expanded the program. Obama, in response, reformed it to cut costs.

Oh I'm sorry Jan 2009. My bad

If Obama "reformed it" how come costs exploded to 2.2B in 2012? Don't worry I know your answer. "Bush Bush Bush Bush Obama knows nothing"

So the program was extended to cellphones in '08. Obama took office in '09....

Definitely Obama's fault. :lamo

3 months before Obama took office. The massive expansion of this program has occurred under his supervision.

Yes definitely Obama's fault when he's had 4+ years to get it right. The program has skyrocketed to 2B+ in 2012 under his watch.

Maybe you should read the source I provide and find out. Hint: the cost did not explode immediately following Bush's expansion. Things take time. And crying that people are blaming Bush for a program Bush signed into law is hilarious, especially when you are blaming Obama for something that happened when he was not even president, but did reform to reduce costs.

I'm sure you know how much drugs you can get with it:

First just how are 'hard working Americans' getting ripped off?

Next it is fun to watch you bemoan crony corporate fat cats when so many think the rich work very hard for their money and deserve their profits.

Then you seem incapable of realizing any program that is expanded, this one by BushII, would have an exponential increase in cost- guess you and BushII have the same grasp of how these things work.

I do know how much drugs you can get for these phones...little to none. If you had a real phone like a smartphone you might get 20 bucks worth of dope....might.

I have seen these phones, the trac and virgin ones, both are super simplistic the best retail example is the Best Buy ATT 'Go Phones' that retail for 8 bucks. Tracphone sells it's phone for 14 bucks retail at Dollar General.

Services like foodstamps, bus passes, or similar, could be pretty decently protected by requiring an ID to redeem. If only that person can use it, it has no real value for trade.

As for the phones, I don't know why our government needs to be handing out free phones to people.
