French soldier stabbed on patrol in Paris

A French soldier on anti-terrorist duties was stabbed in the neck Saturday in an attack that President Francois Hollande said could not "at this stage" be linked to the brutal murder this week of a military man in London.

The attacker fled the scene after stabbing the 23-year-old in the late afternoon in La Defense business district, which at weekends is packed with shoppers. The local prosecutor's office said anti-terror investigators would handle the probe into the attack which was captured by surveillance cameras. The soldier was in uniform and armed and was patrolling as part of France's Vigipirate anti-terrorist surveillance scheme that sees troops deployed at high-profile tourist, business and transport sites across the capital The attacker, described by police as around 1.9 meters (six foot) tall, bearded and wearing a jersey and black trousers, approached his victim, stabbed him and then melted into the crowd without saying a word. The soldier was with two colleagues on the patrol in a busy underground space that hosts shops and provides access to several underground train lines. Hollande told reporters accompanying him on a trip to Ethiopia: "We still do not know the exact circumstances of the attack or the identity of the attacker, but we are looking at all options." "I do not think that at this stage a link can be made" to the attack in London on Wednesday, he said.

That assault saw a soldier hacked to death on a London street by two men wielding knives and a cleaver who later launched into a tirade against British military involvement in Muslim countries. Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian visited the wounded soldier in hospital and later told reporters that the man had been targeted because he was a soldier.

Le Drian, who said the soldier was in a stable condition, vowed to continue France's "implacable" fight against terrorism.

Police sources said the victim would survive the attack but gave no information on possible motivation for the assault.

Prosecutor Robert Gelli said the attacker struck the soldier from behind with a sharp metal object, but he did not confirm earlier reports that the weapon used was a box cutter.

In March last year, self-declared Islamist Mohamed Merah killed seven people in a shooting spree in and around the city of Toulouse. Three of them were French soldiers.

Hollande earlier this month said France was taking seriously a call by Al-Qaeda's north African wing for Muslims worldwide to launch attacks against the country's interests over its military operation in Mali, where French soldiers this year intervened to fight Islamist extremists.

Interior Minister Manuel Valls said Saturday that "there were elements, such as the sudden violence of the attack (on the soldier in Paris), that could lead one to think there is a form of comparison with what happened in London".

But he said in a television interview that investigators must be cautious and could not yet draw such conclusions.

In London, three more men were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of conspiracy to murder the soldier who was hacked to death in the street.

With two attacks on uniformed soldiers so far, hopefully, this won't turn out to be the start of a new trend.

I'm leaning towards "copy cat" at the moment, but it's quite possible that something more organized might be behind the recent incidents. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this is not the case.

There's copycat wth the intention to copy the crime ... and there's copycat with the intention to copy the motive.

But don't concern yourself ... I heard someone say the War On Terror must end.

How much organisation is needed to randomly stab someone? on the contrary if we were dealing with a centralized organisation it would be far easier to deal with, whats far more common (as in the case of 7/7) is small groups inspired by Al Qaeda as an idea, rather then having a direct association with its leadership. Al Qaeda encourages this (E,G through online publications teaching people how to make home made bombs) because it knows it works. What is necessary is a concerted effort to tackle Al Qaeda on an ideological level.

Does anybody have any idea what these people actually hope to accomplish? The only thing I can see happening is creating an anti-Muslim sentiment, prejudiced treatment toward Muslims and possibly immigration and travel restrictions placed on people from Muslim countries. Certainly they couldn't want that.

They want to start a religious war, where they are able to defeat the infidels once and for all, so I doubt creating more anti-Muslim sentiment is a problem for them.

As far as immigration and travel restrictions, the PC laws won't allow that to happen.

The people trying to start a religious war are those who label terrorism as only something Muslims do. Terrorism comes from many forms including things like gangs, groups like the Klan, and even certain US religious sects like the WBC. The purpose for the US war on terror is most certainly to attack Muslims. We clearly overreach in our strikes and do not consider innocent civilians who happen to live in predominantly muslim areas to be uninvolved. If they are involved because of their association with religion then christians become involved in christian terror acts here in the US despite the reality many do not support extremist christian sects and cults. But since terrorist only applies to muslims it has become a completely prejudiced statement and the war is clearly a religious war.

You mean laws rtegarding freedom of association, and the allowance of anyone regardless of their religion to travel without being restricted because of their beliefs in a certain god? Well, if that sort of freedom is PC then you can call me PC and a fan of freedom. Which would make you a fan of fascism if you want to restrict association with a specific religion and a person's ability to travel because they practice that religion.

So, the islamofacists aren't trying to start a religious war? Let me guess, the islamofacists are just innocent victims of white racism. Am I close?

If you'll go back and use your ability to read, you'll notice that I was responding to the comment about restricting people from Muslim countries from travel and immigration, not the restriction of Muslims, in particular.

I bet you wouldn't have a problem with restricting people because of their religious beliefs, just not Muslims. You would be fine with restricting Christians. Wouldn't you?

People, or person? I certainly don't know.

But either way, the motive might have been revenge for a friend killed by French forces somewhere? Revenge for something, is my guess.

Only as much as the christianofascists are. I am all cool with the war on terror if we can start droning small towns in the midwest into dust for having violent members who wish to overthrow the US government and install a christian theocracy in there. Actually in reality I think there is a lot more pressure to have the constitution replaced with the bible rather than the koran here in the US. But no one wants to drone strike RNC headquarters when they promote ideas like that.

Oh, so it is just people of that nationality, sort of like saying italians shouldn't be allowed to travel. That is so much better.

Yes, I think I would restrict our christian soldiers from invading sovereign nations to kill their people based on flimsy excuses to start a religious war made by a republican idiot. However, you seem to be fine with that. Oh wait, I forgot, you don't want them killed because they are muslim, just because they come from a muslim country.

I think it's popular to wish for worse on the notion that when things get bad enough "the people will rise up". Bush and Obama have indirectly caused many people to want one or the other to fail, "to destroy America, "to lose the war".

So, that might be the objective. Response with harsh oppression, drawing more "patriots" to the "cause".

(pure speculation, completely void of facts)

Idiotic post of the year...and it's not even June, yet.

Yes man. Liberals totally think Islam is a magic religion that should be singularly held above others. Our continuous insistence that Islam shouldn't be treated differently than Christianity is proof of this.

Source for the existence of these people, citing the cases of violence they engaged in please?

Well if it has to be something, better soldiers than civilians.

More seriously, I don't think I've ever seen anyone be so effortlessly condescending while also completely missing the point.

When "christianofascists" start flying fully loaded passenger jets into skyscrapers, bombing public sporting events, and randomly attacking bystanders on city streets with bladed instruments, we'll talk about bombing them, and not a single moment before.

There are active Christian terrorist groups operating in Africa, but they don't kill Americans so our incentive to bomb them is minimal.

However, same as I do with Muslims, I don't advocate treating Christians as a whole based on what the extremists do.

Maybe he should've done some research on Hitler. German troops marched freely around Paris with no issues.

The Muslims and the Nazis were allies, during WW2, so the Wehrmacht didn't have any reason to worry about them.

i can see being angry when i caught you in your hypocrisy without a good excuse, but you should be more pleasant like Bill O when Stewart caught him in the same mess.

What hypocrisy? I can't help it that you can't read.

I like how he says "The Muslims" as if they were some singular group of people. You know Germany conquered quite a few Islamic areas, right?

I cannot help you are selectively blind. See, now we are even.

Create whatever fabrication you wish, but it doesn't change what I actually wrote. Sorry for ya.

What's that have to do with anything?

Are you going to try and tell us that those Muslims serving in the Waffen SS were forced into it? Choose your answer wisely! ;)
