When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects light

Re: When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects l

Whoosh, right over your head.

Nye is a scientists and doesn't have to engage in biblical hermeneutics. What is telling is that the weirdo tea baggers in the audience can't accept the fact that the moon doesn't generate its own light because they are weird literalists.

It's telling you would blame Nye for the idiotic literalism of the Christian Right.

Well, you proved my point in the other thread and this one. 1. you can't avoid name calling and 2. the fallacy that the Bible says the moon emits light is a concoction of a liberal mind

Re: When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects l

If they booed, it was probably because he was acting like an asshole.

Bill Nye!? He's like the nicest guy ever. He's not a TV character, he just truly loves science and educating people about science.

I like Bill, but I've seen him speak and he's no Mister Rodgers, he can be a bit of an elitist ass. It should be noted the site this story drives to is an ad/pop-under rich site that appears to be short on content and long on getting folks to visit for the click-throughs.

Re: When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects l

Bill Nye for a sceince guy he seemed not so smart for questioning the bible in Texas . Especailly Texas. He could have just said the moon reflects light not just out right quoting the bible . There are other religons out there why do people like to target christainity ( atheist and sceince people )

Re: When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects l

It was an underhanded comment. He could have easily discussed why the moon shines at night without any reference to the bible.

Re: When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects l

Ah. I looked a bit. The original source article is in ThinkAtheist.... not exactly an unbiased source... who claims a Texas news site once published the story but then removed it, thus making it impossible to verify.

In the ThinkAtheist article there is a little more detail... they assert that Nye not only said the Moon reflected the light of the sun, but quoted Genesis 1:16 about "the greater light and lesser light", asserting the moon was not a light but a reflector. If this is true, then some may have been offended, not necessarily that he said the moon reflected the sun's light, but that he choose to put it in a context as something like "science proving the Bible wrong" or somesuch.

That article also says "several people" booed and/or left, which could be construed another way as saying "A FEW PEOPLE in the audience booed and/or left"... but if you put it that way it wouldn't make Waco look so redneck, would it? :lamo

Assuming there's any truth here at all, which is apparently unproveable. There is nothing on Snopes about it.

It is proveable. Ask Bill Nye

Is he there with you right now? Ask him for us willya?

I am sure he has one of those tweet things.

Not hard to do.

I myself do not have one.

Please tell me this is a joke When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects light from the sun - Blogs - Galva News - Galva, IL Does anyone actually believe the moon produces it own light? I can understand thinking it was made of cheese, but producing its own light
Sure. The moon is made of "light" cheese. Anybody would know that. Ever hear of anybody dying on the moon from clogged arteries? I rest my case.

Re: When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects l

We must remember this Texass ...and Waco to boot. If I wanted to find the deepest pocket of faith based ignorance outside of the creationists museum in Kentucky this where I would go.
They take a good deal of pride in the level of their ignorance there
Bill Nye probably got booed just for having "science" in his name.

I'd go to 430 South Capitol St. SE, Washington, DC. They worship a different God but the ignorance exhibited there is profound beyond comparison.

If it happened anywhere it would be Texas. But yeah, its like something straight out of The Onion. Lol.

It's an important part of the point he was trying to make about proper science education. Like it or not, peoples' interpretation of biblical verse (or lack of critical thinking on the subject) can often be counterproductive to that goal. There's no reason to tiptoe around this. We have a sitting member of the House of Representatives on a science committee who thinks that embryology, the big bang theory, and evolution are "lies from the pit of hell." This is hurting America. It should be confronted. Loudly and often.

Haven't run into him lately. If I see him I'll try to remember. :)

New to the thread, so I did some Googling. Did not know Nye has a patent for ballet pointe shoes. Bill Nye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also wasn't aware of a supposedly viral YouTube in which he explains why teaching creationism is bad for kids. Here is a transcript of what he said to Gayle King with a link to the clip: CBS This Morning Spotlights Atheist Bill Nye, Who Believes 'Creationism Isn

But I have lots of experience attending lectures and political meetings, and just as there are always a few on message boards who don't understand what they read, there are a few in every crowd who don't understand what they hear or who "selectively" listen.

Once I attended a debate on evolution that finally had the male physicist speaker so angry that he began shrieking anti-religious ad homs. The lady sitting next to me, a new Christian, became so upset by the blasphemy that she burst into tears, stood up and denounced the physicist, and stomped out of the lecture hall. Happens.

Re: When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects l

If I was there I would have boo'd him for not understanding the passage. The passage never says the moon emits light, just that it is the source of light at night. Reflected light is still a source of light. Bill Nye is a liberal that tried to twist the words of the Bible in the Bible belt. He should have known he'd get boo'd. He probably did know.

No, it's not.

Re: When Bill Nye, the Science Guy, got booed in Texas for saying the moon reflects l

No, it's not.

Yes it is. Based on the perspective of the observer. If the night has light that comes from the moon, the moon is a light source, even if the moon is nothing more than a reflector, it is still a source. To put it another way, without the moon there would be no light at night (aside from the stars in the sky). The moon provides light through reflection, it just doesn't create it.

Too bad that's not what's taken into account when considering what is and isn't a source of light. The rest of your post is mystical pseudoscience. The moon isn't a source of light. It's a reflection of light. Pointing a flashlight into a mirror doesn't make the mirror a source of light. Source is synonymous with origin or beginning, no light originates from the moon.

Except my original point is that the Bible doesn't say the moon emits light. The hebrew word used in the passage means to be light or be illuminated by light depending on the context.

Contradictions: By the Light of the Moon - Answers in Genesis

You've proved my point: you can't address the issue that Nye is a scientist not a theologian, and the tea party types you defend are neither.

Yes, yes, gloss away. The fact is the literalists think it does say that (and in fact it does SAY it, but you are not taking it literally).

Funny how the Christian Right take the bible literally when it suits their bankrupt politics, but they don't when it doesn't. It's bad science, bad hermeneutics and bad Christianity. St Augustine would laugh at the Christian Right, if not accuse them of heresy.

So now scientific knowledge is elitist?

Conservatives: they just don't like knowledge.

Contorted glosses don't change the fact that the Christian Right DOES take Genesis literally, so you're arguing against your own team and don't seem to realize it.

Actually, I did address that Nye is not a theologian by addressing his misuse of the verse.
