Drunk ASU student left at hospital with Post-it note

An Arizona State University student who passed out from drinking tequila was left in wheelchair in a hospital lobby with a Post-it note to tell doctors that he’d participated in a drinking competition.

Tempe police say the 19-year-old student was found early Saturday morning in the emergency room lobby of St. Luke’s Hospital.

According to police, a sticky note on the student’s body gave his name and said he’d been drinking and needed help.

Hospital staff noticed the student and helped him.

Sgt. Michael Pooley says the student had a blood-alcohol level of .47 percent after consuming about 20 shots of tequila during a drinking competition. A driver in Arizona is considered intoxicated at 0.08 percent.

Police say criminal charges could be filed against the friends who left the student.

As an alumni of THE University of Arizona this doesn't surprise me from our brothers to the north.

The guy that supplied the alcohol should be charged. The kid should be charged if applicable a well.

You know you have quality friends when they load you up on alcohol and when you pass out just leave you in a wheelchair with a sticky note attached.

This is what passes for friends these days? Thank God we had a different definition when I was growing up.

Is that like when people keep saying THE Ohio State University? If so, I have another University to hate.

And what charges could be filed? They dropped their friend off IN the hospital.

I would hope these people could be charged with something. If they were present when he was drinking that much, they are assisting suicide. Must've changed their minds.

This "shots" business?? Ridiculous. Absolutely abominable.

I think UVA once used the logo THE UNIVERSITY on all its swag.....

Under state law, there is probably some argument they had no duty to take him to the hospital, but once they took dominion over him to get him there, they had a custodial duty arising from their voluntary actions to get him help. That said, my gut instinct is that this is going to be one of those fraternity things and they did it to distance the frat from the impending corpse. Plus since the student is 19, I assume they assume the dropper offer was also the alcohol provider to someone underage.

Assisting suicide? How about, dumb ass dunk as **** freshman panicked, wanted to get their friend help, but didn't want to get in any trouble from the law or school? Much better to drop them off in the lobby of the hospital than to leave them in some closet in a house party to die like Samantha Spady's friends.

How about they were all a bunch of assholes participating in the possible death of a friend?

Dumping him off at the hospital with a sticky note is not the same as getting him care. So Depraved Indifference or Reckless Disregard. Made even worse when you ask, how did they get him there? They either drove drunk or the sober driver made a sober decision to dump him.

I'd imagine the school will have something to say as well once they've identified the perps (if they are students).

That's a lot of assumption and supposition in order to blame the Greek system. They did the same thing in Spady's case, remember that? Turns out it wasn't their fault, her friends abandoned her and left her to die alone. Fraternities and sororities are not the cornerstone of all that is evil in the world despite what some of you want to say.

at least they had the decency to take him to the ER, instead of leaving him passed out on the basement floor

Possible, but a hell of a lot less likely than freshmen in college binge drinking on the weekends.

On the bright side, at least the kid learned his "buddies" couldn't care less if he lived or died. Maybe his willingness to die just to be cool will be changed going forward.

like I said, at least they cared enough to take him to the ER. most of my "friends" from college would've just left him laying where he passed out.

That and possible prosecution from the law are the likely reasons as to why they didn't identify themselves.

I don't think that had anything to do with decency. More like trying to avoid a manslaughter charge.

That's what I'm saying. I think overall they did the right thing. Perhaps they panicked about reprisal from either the law or the school from engaging or being around underage drinking and just left the dude there. But they left him there with a note detailing the reason why he was there. Not ideal; but better than leaving them in a closet to die.

I'm thinking waiting room with a sticky note is about 3 donuts short of a dozen when it comes to the cared enough.

don't know. college kids are always doing stupid crap like this. Not claiming his "buddies" are paragons of virtue...only that they at least had enough sense to get the guy to the ER.

yeah. nail them to the wall... that way, the next time an incident like this comes up the "buddies" will just leave him where he falls or dump him in the street.

Do you not get that it's one and the same??

It's standard freshman behavior. They are not trying to kill the guy, there was no attempted suicide. It was freshmen doing what freshmen across the country do. At least this time they got the kid to a hospital.

That's already done. Remember Samantha Spady? What these kids did was actually above and beyond what is normally done, and they got their friend to the hospital. Now if this trend continues it will have designated drivers and controlled, reasoned drinking.

yeah, they were just exercising their right under the 5th not to incriminate themselves. ;)
