Day of Prayer vs Day of Reason 2013.....

I honestly don't care. There is dozens of fights that need to be had and this is issue is not even on the map. Calling for anything be it a day of prayer or a day of reason is stupid and the government should not be doing either, but really, who cares?

By what right does the athiest judge the religious? By what right!

By the same right a parent has for telling their 5 year old to stop playing with their imaginary friend and to make some real ones? AKA good reason.

It is a divisive argument that doesn't solve any actual problems, but takes a lot of effort. In other words an ideal cause for congress.

No, no it isn't. Its making yourself feel like you're helping when really doing nothing.

^^ This.

Your fellow human being is in peril, so instead of actually doing something to help him, you tell him you'll pray for him and keep minding your own business.

Some might do that, but they're fundamentally different actions. Prayer is focused on the external, appealing to outside forces, like gods or spirits. Meditation is focused inward, finding strength and peace in the meditator, instead of from somewhere else. Equating them would be incorrect.

Hear me reason! What animal would be the sigil of House Atheist? A Galapagos tortoise?

Prayer is an invocation or act that seeks to activate a rapport with a deity, an object of worship, or a spiritual entity through deliberate communication. Prayer can be a form of religious practice, may be either individual or communal and take place in public or in private. It may involve the use of words or song. When language is used, prayer may take the form of a hymn, incantation, formal creed, or a spontaneous utterance in the praying person. There are different forms of prayer such as petitionary prayer, prayers of supplication, thanksgiving, and worship/praise. Prayer may be directed towards a deity, spirit, deceased person, or lofty idea, for the purpose of worshipping, requesting guidance, requesting assistance, confessing sins or to express one's thoughts and emotions. Thus, people pray for many reasons such as personal benefit or for the sake of others. Yoga is also a common form of prayer.

Most major religions involve prayer in one way or another. Some ritualize the act of prayer, requiring a strict sequence of actions or placing a restriction on who is permitted to pray, while others teach that prayer may be practiced spontaneously by anyone at any time.....snip~

Rationalist approach to prayer

In this view, ultimate goal of prayer is to help train a person to focus on divinity through philosophy and intellectual contemplation. This approach was taken by Maimonides and the other medieval rationalists. One example of this approach to prayer is noted by Rabbi Steven Weil, who was appointed the Orthodox Union's Executive-Vice President in 2009. He notes that the word “prayer” is a derivative of the Latin “precari”, which means “to beg”. The Hebrew equivalent “tefilah”, however, along with its root “pelel” or its reflexive “l’hitpallel”, means the act of self-analysis or self-evaluation. This approach is sometimes described as the person praying having a dialogue or conversation with God.

Kabbalistic approach to prayer

Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) uses a series of kavanot, directions of intent, to specify the path the prayer ascends in the dialog with God, to increase its chances of being answered favorably. Kabbalists ascribe a higher meaning to the purpose of prayer, which is no less than affecting the very fabric of reality itself, restructuring and repairing the universe in a real fashion. In this view, every word of every prayer, and indeed, even every letter of every word, has a precise meaning and a precise effect. Prayers thus literally affect the mystical forces of the universe, and repair the fabric of creation.

In contrast with Western religion, Eastern religion for the most part discards worship and places devotional emphasis on the practice of meditation alongside scriptural study. Consequently, prayer is seen as a form of meditation or an adjunct practice to meditation.

In certain Buddhist sects, prayer accompanies meditation. Buddhism for the most part sees prayer as a secondary, supportive practice to meditation and scriptural study. Gautama Buddha claimed that human beings possess the capacity and potential to become liberated, or enlightened, through contemplation (Sanskrit: bhāvana and dhyāna), leading to insight. Prayer is seen mainly as a powerful psycho-physical practice that can enhance meditation.

The skillful means (Sanskrit: upāya) of the transfer of merit (Sanskrit: pariṇāmanā) is an evocation and prayer. Moreover, indeterminate buddhas are available for intercession as they reside in awoken-fields (Sanskrit: buddha-kshetra).

The nirmānakāya of an awoken-field is what is generally known and understood as a mandala. The opening and closing of the ring (Sanskrit: maṇḍala) is an active prayer. An active prayer is a mindful activity, an activity in which mindfulness is not just cultivated but is. A common prayer is "May the merit of my practice, adorn Buddhas' Pure Lands, requite the fourfold kindness from above, and relieve the suffering of the three life-journeys below. Universally wishing sentient beings, Friends, foes, and karmic creditors, all to activate the bodhi mind, and all to be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.....snip~

Prayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yet here is one major difference.....with Prayer. The question has to be asked of those that have been healed. Thru Prayer people have been healed. No other external outside influence other than GOD or a Creator. Yet show me where any of been healed from a life threatening illness with just reason.

Please provide examples of prayer actually producing a noticeable effect on medical health. And then show how the large double blind study a few years ago was wrong.

As to healing people with reason... that's medical technology. Our minds, our intellect, invented medicines and life saving techniques and machines that made us a whole lot healthier and longer lived.

Here I will just go with the basic Wiki that points out about healing. Although I am sure those who are more into Religion would know more about cases of Healing.

Scientific studies regarding the use of prayer have mostly concentrated on its effect on the healing of sick or injured people. Meta-studies of the studies in this field have been performed showing evidence only for no effect or a potentially small effect. For instance, a 2006 meta analysis on 14 studies concluded that there is "no discernable effect" while a 2007 systemic review of intercessory prayer reported inconclusive results, noting that 7 of 17 studies had "small, but significant, effect sizes" but the review noted that the most methodologically rigorous studies failed to produce significant findings.[1][2] The efficacy of petition in prayer for physical healing to a deity has been evaluated in numerous other studies, with contradictory results.[3][4][5][6] There has been some criticism of the way the studies were conducted.....snip~

Again.....invented machines are an external source. Life saving techniques would not apply in cases where those have been healed to walk when they couldn't. Or to come back from some life threatening disease. Such as Cancer.

I suggest a day of "I don't give a ****".

It's good to see Congress doing something important...

Another thing is the Day of Prayer was started for the Country.....so why is Stark talking about a Day of Reason and talking about the rest of the Planet? Or the World. What does the Rest of the World or the Planet have to do with a day that was approved by The people for the people and for their own Country?

Did he have trouble understanding that which was meant for the Country as opposed to the rest of the world? I mean what was so hard to understand about the legislation, The Constitution and the Country. Just where does the Rest of the World Come into Play?

It's good to see Congress doing something important...

If it's unimportant now then it was unimportant when they established it in '52.

There is no inherent contradiction between faith and reason in the human experience. Extremists on both sides are foolish.

And I had this bizarrre notion that - at least in theory - everyday in Congress was supposed to be a day of reason. Besides, he's being unreasonable.

Prayer is reasonable.

Precisely. I always get a giggle when I see people attempt to discuss faith and reason as competing ends of some spectrum.

So then no, no demonstrable examples of supernatural healing via prayer. Meanwhile, billions of lives saved through science and reason.

On the contrary. We built them. With our minds, with our reason. We built prosthetic arms and legs that can be controlled directly by brain waves. That is exactly the product of human reason. People who would have been crippled can walk. Mothers who would have died in childbirth now live, and so do their children. Vaccines kept childhood diseases in check and put infant mortality down in ways that prayer has never done.

Congressman Pete Stark calls for National Day of Reason instead of prayer.....

Sounds reasonable.

Jus'sayin'

Actually, I didn't even look to see Pasch.....I thought maybe some of those that are religious and into prayer would know about cases of Healing thru Prayer. So that is not to say there isn't any demonstrable examples. Moreover, even Wiki notes there are with what they have referenced.

It is not the same.....as one who is cured from like Cancer. Wherein medically they knew the individual had cancer. Validated thru medical people. Yet then walks in one day and it is gone. No trace in the body. Allegedly cured by Prayer. Not reason.

Allegedly cured by prayer. Actually cured by immune system. But you're inexplicably limiting this to sudden and spontaneous recoveries. Which is nonsense. Every single person who is saved from death by chemotherapy is saved because of human reason and our invention of that treatment. Everyone who is saved because of a vaccine is saved by human reason and our invention of vaccines. I'm not sure what you envision for "curing by reason". Do you imagine someone logically deducing that a person ought to suddenly be healthy? That's not how it works.

Prayer is reasonable.

Go into the thread about the parents who allowed their child to die without medical attention and tell us all about how prayer is reasonable.

Does any fundie out there remember what Jesus said about praying in public? Of course not. The irony is the religious right never reads what Jesus actually said:

Mat 6:6 - "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you

So much for literalism among the fundies.

Then there were the Eastern Religions.....so much for the lacking thought processes of a Progressive.
