Gen. Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship was responsible for the deaths of as many as 3,200 people in Chile in the 1970s, but the Vatican dismissed reports of bloodshed at the time as "communist propaganda," according to diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks on Monday.

In a 1973 diplomatic cable addressed to Henry Kissinger, then serving as the United States' Secretary of State, high-ranking Vatican official Giovanni Benelli was quoted as relaying "his and the pope's grave concern over successful international leftisf campaign to misconstrue completely realities of Chilean situation." Benelli dismissed reports of massacre as "unfounded" and "possibly [the] greatest success of Communist propaganda," while explaining away whatever violence had occurred as "unfortunately natural following coup d'etat."
"The cables also showed the Vatican later realized the full extent of the abuses being carried out," according to AFP, "but refused to criticize Pinochet's regime openly and continued with normal diplomatic relations."

Not good press for the Vatican... Tsk tsk.

Yes, but the vatican is a church organization. I can give them a lot of crap for a lot of things, but It is their purpose to ignore what is right in front of their eyes, and also their purpose is not to put an end to things. they just whine about it really loud. They are not a world military or police force. So they didn't wag their fingers, was that really going to do much? It is just a good reason to show when the vatican speaks you smile and nod and dismiss them like you do with the crazy old lady down the street.

Dude. You dismiss reports of the atrocities of your Leftist heroes as "propaganda" routinely. Tsk tsk, you.

I do?
Please list what "atrocities" i dismiss as "propaganda"

*but congrats on trying to derail a thread*

I had no doubt you were going to respond exactly this way. This "wha? Li'l ol' ME??" routine gets old.

One need only note your participation in any thread involving Che, Chavez, or Cuba.

So i deny Che was in charge of revolutionary trials? I deny that Cuba after the revolution held revolutionary trials? And what Chavez was involved in "atrocities" this is news to me!

 You can cherry-pick whatever convenient points you want, but you absolutely defend Che and Cuba against their butcheries and deny they happened.

Chavez has many misdeeds under his name; whether or not they're "atrocities" is beside the point; it's that you dismiss it as propaganda.

You "tsk tsk" the Vatican for what you do yourself.

You said i dismissed them there is a huge difference between "dismissing" them and "defending them". Do i defend Che? Yes. Was it a "butchery" depends on your defintion but if you follow or did research on the trial you will find that they followed the steps the Nuemburg trials went through as well. But if you wanna debate Che i beleive we have a very very long thread on that somehwere else. This is not about Che or Chavez or Cuba this is about the Vatican and Chile.

You dismiss what he did as "propaganda," denying it ever happened, "defending" Che. That, of course, is only when you try to give any responses beyond "lol wut?" or an emoticon.

Look, if you think Che was a swell guy, you're either denying he did what he did or you're perfectly OK with the butchery. And you think Che was a swell guy. So you tell me which one it is.

You dismiss what he did as "propaganda,"
No i didnt. I didnt dismiss anything.

Here im pretty active on that thread you can find out for yourself.

This thread is not about Che.

A long dead Pope made a bad call on a massacre that occurred before I was born. This is Breaking News how exactly?

Even if we accept the premise that Demsocialist does dismiss some atrocities as propaganda, which you have yet to produce some quotes to support your position. And while we're on the subject I like Demsocialist, but find his support for Chavez puzzling.

But I digress.

Which is the more poignant and news worthy?

A young socialist from Kansas dismissing atrocities on the interwebs (if we accept that premise)?

Or the leaders of an organization who claim to be a moral authority in the world?

I'm not worried about poignant and newsworthy. It is suddenly illegitimate on DP to point out a poster's hypocrisy? If so, I missed when that came down. Maybe it was discussed in The Loft.

Hoo-boy. That thread is exactly what I'm referring to. I invite everyone to explore it.
Go right ahead.

No one forced you to ad the "tsk tsk," dude. That opens you up to exactly this criticism.
Oh so if i didnt say "tsk tsk" you wouldnt try to derail this thread.. .:lamo

I would not have had reason to discuss the hypocrisy, no.
