Lego will reportedly cease production of a popular “Star Wars” toy set after Muslim communities complained about the product. The Independent reports that several Muslim groups in Austria claimed “Jabba’s Palace” was anti-Muslim as it showed popular “Star Wars” character Jabba the Hut in a mosque-like lair with a hookah, guns and an imprisoned Chewbacca.
“This sort of thing does not belong in a child’s bedroom,” Melissa Gunes, spokeswoman for Austria’s Turkish Cultural Association, told The Independent. “The game is pedagogical dynamite. It depicts Muslims as terrorists.”

You've got to be F$*%()ing Kidding Me. :doh

To be fair, the construction of the set is quite similar to the look of a mosque and adjacent minaret used in many Islamic places of worship.

Designers take inspiration from everywhere, and the designer in this case may well have got the idea from pictures of mosques. I doubt it was an intentional jab in the eye.

Well it's been a while since I've seen Return of the Jedi, but does this lego palace somewhat resemble that of the movie? If it does, the outrage is pretty stupid.

Screw those thin-skinned muslim turks.

Lego needs to make more Jabba the Turks!

Time to go buy a lot of these. If Lego really stops making them they will be worth a lot of money to collectors in a few years.

As a child, I loved Lego's. As an adult who steps on them with bare feet and spends the next ten minutes crying like a baby, I wish they'd stop making all of them. They are the work of the devil.

One should notice the date on this 'story'.

I would say it is the terrorists that slaughter innocents in schools, souks, markets, etc that make Muslims 'look' like terrorists...but thats just me...

Careful. It's a trap.

It's actually not an April Fools joke.

The LEGO Group's reaction to criticism of LEGO Star Wars product: “Jabba´s Palace”
The Austrian Turkish Cultural Community has criticized a LEGO Star Wars product for looking similar to a mosque in Istanbul. The product is however not based on any real building but on a fictional building from a scene in the movie Star Wars Episode VI.

Now you're ****ing around with Star Wars? That's the last straw. That is why you fail.

The LEGO Group regrets that the product has caused the members of the Turkish cultural community to interprete it wrongly, but point out that the design of the product only refers to the fictional content of the Star WarsTM saga.

A few media have reported that the product is being discontinued due to the mentioned criticism. This is, however, not correct.

I saw that, then they went on to say.....

As a normal process products in the LEGO Star WarsTM assortment usually have a life-cycle of one to three years after which they leave the assortment and may be renewed after some years. The LEGO Star WarsTM product Jabba's Palace 9516 was planned from the beginning to be in the assortment only until the end of 2013 as new exciting models from the Star Wars universe will follow.

Not sure if i'm buying that. I imagine Jabbas Palace would be one of the popular lines. Much like an X Wing or Plant Hoth. It's a pretty big part of the whole SW story.

I noticed there was no Leia Slave girl in the Lego kit. I can only imagine how impressed they would've been about that . Made me giggle a bit to think of Leia in a Burqa. Millions of men all over the world would be gutted.

Actually its a quite common practice. Disney is a big example of this happening. They'll come up with a commercial for some old disney movie that "once this offer is over the movie will go into a vault to be locked away" (paraphrasing). Then a few years later you see a similar commerical saying the same thing.

Wouldn't let me. Maybe something up with my browser. :p

Here ya go brutha. ;)

Report: Lego To Stop Production Of ‘Star Wars’ Set Due To Anti-Muslim Backlash

In a statement, Lego says the decision to stop production of the set didn’t come from the criticism.....

They (lego) say they didn't stop it due to the criticism.....they just decided they had some more time that they would like to spend on the planet, huh?

So basically their gripe is that the LEGO Star Wars product looked similar to a mosque in Istanbul. The product is however not based on any real building but on a fictional building from a scene in Star Wars Episode VI. Jabba's Palace was planned from the beginning to be in the assortment only until the end of 2013.

Problem solved i guess until they decide Episode VI is the next target because Jabbas Palace appeared in that.

It's just so ridiculous.

Damn, I had no idea Jabba the Hut was muslim. I guess it makes sense now. Right before he dropped Luke in the Rancor pit he yelled "ALLAHU AKHBAR!!! ALALALALALALALA!"

I would normally agree with this, and did for a bit until i remembered it was george lucas. Normally i would say it is just sci fi and it only makes sense to design desert structures after desert structures, but we know what lucas loves to do. he tosses his political views and BS into the movies he does link a rock into a nitroglycerine plant. he drew so many parallels between the republicans and the empire it took me way out of the movies. I may not disagree with some of it, but I didn't go to see a political film.

I am just saying it is very hard to say it was not intentional when he did things like the imperial senate, Jar Jar, and the whole newt gingrich thing in the new movies. maybe he did think that muislims are a bunch of crooked space slugs? he gave jesus a sword of light to cut them into little pieces, so perhaps there is some truth to the matter.
