During a discussion about ongoing challenges to the economy Thursday, Alaska Republican Rep. Don Young referred to Hispanic workers as "wetbacks," an ethnic slur used to describe migrant workers.

“My father had a ranch; we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes,” Young told Alaska public radio station KRBD. “It takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It’s all done by machine.”

The term "wetback" is a pejorative term that has been used to describe workers from Latin American countries who swim across the Rio Grande to reach the United States.

In a statement to the Anchorage Daily News, Young apologized for using the phrase to describe the workers, saying he meant "no disrespect."

"I used a term that was commonly used during my days growing up on a farm in Central California," Young said in the statement. "I know that this term is not used in the same way nowadays and I meant no disrespect.".....snip~

We just got done saying how these fools that are in the GOP need to keep their Big Mouths shut. Right away with an apology and an excuse. I don't give a damn what they use to say back when he was growing up. He know they don't say the crap today and not in front of Cameras. Or in some Interview. Course he is up in Alaska where he wont have to worry about getting ran out of Office.....huh? What can he really say.....that he didn't get the message. BS!

I agree- he should have just called them what they are. Illegal immigrants. They skirted our laws to get here, and that wouldn't be tolerated in Mexico.

Hiya Liz!

Especially after he heard we are reaching out to Hispanics
.....who are conservative in nature. Moreover he knows the left would jump all over this as would the MSM. Which it is and is trending.

and I think some missed the point being made
at one time 50-60 workers to pick the crop
today, 2. because the work is done mostly by machines.

Was it smart to use the term, no. but move on.

How many of us can say we never used some words that are now considered polilically incorrect? Was'nt there some hearings on why we should not use the term "illegal".

People need to get over it.

All Americans called them wetbacks. The country had a program called Operation Wetback under Dwight Eisenhower and over a million of them were deported.

Actually apologizing for it is making it worse. He shouldn't apologize. If he was smart he would double down. He's letting other people dictate what he's say's now. He HAS say what he wants regardless what others think of it. Right now he has no respect. He has to earn that back. And he aint gona do that by being touchy feely nice. Human nature don't work that way. He's gona get the crap kicked out of him no matter what. If he stands up for himself while that occurs he earn a bit of respect doing. Otherwise he goes the way of the rest of the republicans that apologize the dust bin.

Lizze they are NOT illegal immigrants they are unlawful aliens.

Yes, racial slurs used to be a lot more popular. Along with things like segregation or slavery and votings bans and whatnot.

If using racial slurs is a way to gain respect in your universe, I'm glad I don't live there.

The term "Wetback" isn't really based on race, it was based upon an illegal method of entry into the United States.

Racial slurs are always just under the surface with conservatives, exposing their true blighted souls.

House Speaker admonishes fellow Republican for immigrant slur.....

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner on Friday condemned a reference to migrant workers made by fellow Republican Representative Don Young, calling the comments "offensive and beneath the dignity of the office."

Boehner issued a statement saying there was "no excuse" for the comments.

"Congressman Young's remarks were offensive and beneath the dignity of the office he holds. I don't care why he said it - there's no excuse," he said.

Young, who has spent 40 years in Congress, also is facing a House ethics investigation into possible misuse of campaign funds, failure to report gifts and other offenses. The ethics investigation is similar to an earlier Department of Justice inquiry, which produced no charges.....snip~

Looks like young is under investigation as well.

Except, not all illegal's waded the Rio Grande to come here illegally; hence, not all illegals are, "wet backs".

I sincerely do not give a ****.

I'm getting a lil fed up with dumbasses using racist/racial epithets... and racism in general.

i'm getting more tired of people "defending " their own racists/racism while castigating other's racists.......it's like integrity is a foreign concept or someting.

Should what Mexico does change who we are?
