Study: Too Much Salt Kills One in 10 Americans

Salt kills 1 in 10 Americans. That's over 30,000,000 deaths!!!!SEVEN HUNDRED - that's 700! - Americans per day are murdered by SALT!

So why is ANYONE talking about guns??????

It's time to put those mass murderingly Morton's executives in prison for life and execute the CEO. THEY KNEW!

Bloomberg better do something and fast to save us.

Everyone born will surely die, so those 9/10 will not live forever either. If you have hypertension then perhaps it is worth monitoring your salt intake, yet the article indicates that the damage may have been done long before you get any say in those dietary choices presented to you.

Why bring up guns if you want to ban salt?

I imagine his point would be priority issues... like being overly concerned with terrorism while you drive drunk.

How this point was lost on you I haven't the foggiest...

I wonder what all of the people did before refrigeration that used salt perpetually to preserve food?

Unless you're over weight with HBP and eating canned foods all day, I doubt the salt issue is really that bad. I'd say being bombarded by the chemicals in processed food is far worse. Fertilizers, growth hormones, pesticides, antibiotics, steroids, bacteria etc.

I totally go around throwing salt at people, and never have seen a single one die because of it. I guess some people are just lucky and everyone they assalt dies. Anyway, i am pretty sure i would do better with bullets.

We should ban Assault Salt and any shakers with more than 10-serving capacity...

:lamo

Seriously, some people act like if they can just pass enough "safety" laws that they're going to live forever or something...

It's all about control. If they can totally control what you eat and blast your 2nd Amendment rights, then they can do anything from telling where you can live to telling you what books you can read.

Remember the calls from Libbos for more restrictions on free speech when that dude made that anti-Islam video? How many times have Libbos called for Rush's arrest because he's a racist?

Little do you know... Pristine/pure water + pickled vegetables = immortality. Add even 1 chicken wing in and you are imperfect and doomed to worms. :p *keeps piloting my little tugboat through fantasy land*

I detest it when some so-called scientific org makes such a statement as in the OP. There is absolutely no way to determine whether that group of people died as a result of salt usage (unless they drowned in it). Hypertension can and does happen to those on salt free and low salt diets. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that a large percentage of those who died this way were on salt free/low salt diets before they died.

Long life isn't desirable if you're miserable for the length of it. Want to live a good life? Eat what makes you happy.

Those people died early and often.

It's kind of weird how every single health concern is suddenly used to make guns and murderers look better by comparison.

This is one reason I support an A Salt rifle ban!

A ban on salt would cost too much. It would cost many people their salarys.
On unrelated note, the origin of the word salary is related to the use of salt.

I'd be willing to bet that a large percentage of those who died this way were on salt free/low salt diets before they died.

If they had been on low salt diets their entire lives that bet might have some validity. But many people learn the dangers of excessive salt only after their first heart attack or stroke, and then go on severe salt restrictions to reduce further damage.

At any rate, the 1 in 10 figure is very obviously a sensationalist number. To be sure, excess salt intake is a contributing factor to all diseases of the heart and cardiovascular system...but so is obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep, stress, etc. etc. etc. It can in no way be proven that salt is the lynchpin cause in 1 in 10 deaths, that without which the person would not have died. No way.

joko's point I think is one that I share...gun crime is bad, but it is put forward as a front burner public health issue, when there are many preventable causes of death that exact a far greater toll than guns, and that are not enshrined in the Constitution as a right of the people.

I edited out your "and murderers" part because it was catty and I won't dignify it by attempting to rebut it.

The government has made attempts at finding ways to lower americans sodium intake.

U.S. limits urged for salt in processed food - CNN.com

However, your argument that since too much salt kills people, so we shouldn't be talking about guns, is silly on its face. If something is killing americans it's ok to have a discussion about it. The idea that we can only deal with one thing at a time is stupid at best.

Its not "silly." My wife can't defend our children or herself with salt. Banning high levels of salt in processed and fast foods would not put one person at any risk whatsoever.

How much effort is the White House, VP, and Democrats all over the country being spend on guns compared to on salt - which kills MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of Americans?

It is about reality versus ideology - in terms of government control freakism.

Again, the government has made pushes to limit salt, but that has nothing to do with gun control. If you want to argue why we shouldn't have gun control, that's all well and good, but ifyou want to say that we shouldn't discuss it because of salt, that's a stupid argument. And why do guns get more press? Because when a guy shoots up a school or a movie theater, innocent people die. When you yourself eat too much salt, you are harming yourself, and if we are honest, we worry much more about tragedies that happen to innocents, than to people that just didn't care for themselves. But that has nothing to do with government control. If the government did make a big push on salt, your il would be right there bitching again that they are limiting freedom. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
