Duncan Introduces Bill to Reform Crop Insurance Program | Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-TN) today joined with United States Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) to introduce the Crop Insurance Subsidy Reduction Act (H.R. 943), which would significantly reduce the amount of taxpayer dollars used to subsidize crop insurance.

H.R. 943 returns federal crop insurance premium subsidies to their pre-Agriculture Risk Protection Act (ARPA) levels. ARPA was passed in 2000 and raised the taxpayer portion of crop insurance premiums to 62% from 37%.

Time to end welfare to corporations like Monsanto.

Prepare for a spectacular burst of creativity on both sides of the aisle, our elected representatives coming up with all kinds of excuses for NOT supporting the most common-sense bill in recent memory....

My only concern is that they don't cut support for small farmers, but they really do need to cut the welfare for Big Ag

why is it you are for welfare for those you favor, and against those you don't favor?

government is not supposed to be in the business of giving anyone money.

by government acting as (you want them to) they are practicing crony capitalism......picking winners and losers....which is wrong.

Now if we could get out of the flood insurance business..........

If Monsanto were truly a loser, then I could see giving them assistance if a drought or disease was poised to destroy their company...but Monsanto is so large and so widely divested that taxpayer funded crop insurance is simply a way to shift losses on the balance sheet on to the government (i.e. taxpayers) and keep profits for themselves.

You're right, crop insurance should not be about picking winners and losers, it should be about maintaining the integrity of the U.S. food supply, so that short term shocks don't have catastrophic effects on the industry. By extension it should be about maintaining diversity, however slight, in the number of players in the national agricultural business. If Monsanto by virtue of its sheer size can swallow up smaller agribusinesses because one by one they fall due to various external issues not related to poor business management, then we have reduced competition. That's not good for consumers.

Why is it you make stuff up?

you say i am making stuff up?

Yes, but it has nothing to do with who I favor. It has to do with need.

WITH NEED?.....YOU JUST STATED "DON'T CUT SMALL FARMERS",------------> SO YOUR TAKING A POSITION.

you want money going to one, and not another.

government was not created to give anyone money, unless goods or services are rendered to government.
