Reagan's home could become a parking lot for Obama's library | Washington Times Communities

CHICAGO, Illinois, January 25, 2013 - A new Cold War is brewing here in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood and it has nothing to do with the frigid temperature.
The apartment building at 832 E. 57th Street was once the Chicago home of a boy who would become a President.
No, it’s not Barack Obama of Hawaii. It was at the apartment’s first floor window that a young Ronald Reagan looked out upon the world.
But some powerful Chicagoans are planning to demolish Reagan’s historic home. Is it politically motivated? Is Mayor Rahm Emanuel behind the move?

Reagan as a child.
It was a different world back in 1915. Reagan's family had moved here from Tampico, Illinois. His father had gotten a job at the famed Marshall Field’s – now only a memory. A coin-operated gas lamp was the only home’s only source of heat.
But it didn’t stop a young “Dutch” Reagan from dreaming.
Young Reagan would watch the horse-drawn fire engines galloping wildly down the streets to save the day and he decided that he, too, would become a firefighter. It was here, too, that he survived a bout with pneumonia – he had the fight in him even then

In January, Reagan’s home was granted a last minute stay of execution by the City of Chicago, at least for now. But the clock is ticking and it could be 90 days or less before demolition begins.
While the university is planning to kill Reagan’s home, University of Chicago is also aggressively lobbying to be the site of President Barack Obama’s presidential library
Thoughts?

I believe we have enough things honoring President Reagan, from an aircraft carrier to the Airport in DC. He has a holy pilgrimage site in California for the faithful to flock to. lots of schools and bridges named for him.

Question is how many folks visited the old apt building since Reagan's death and who the hell even knew he lived there at all before this?

Back east a popular joke is the number of places that have signs- 'George Washington slept here', the Father of our Country, well ok, but the Gipper... maybe not so much?

The Democrats hate Reagan because they have no national figure to match his prominence. Obama keeps trying to get others to think of him as Lincoln and is trying to elevate himself to the status of Reagan, but his efforts are just silly, he looks silly even trying. It infuriates the Liberals when the Conservatives keep mentioning Reagan because they have no one at all and Reagan was very popular worldwide. He was a figure of humor and grace, without malice, very successful before running for President. All of the things that the Liberals hate so much about Conservatives.

I do laugh when I hear his name mentioned with such reverance as you do. Is that what you mean by humor?

Change that "a" to an "e." As time goes on, you might become more familiar with our language.

I am a little anti-historical places these days. I kid you not, there is a road near me that historical because George Washington probably went down it when he was visiting the states even though there is no official evidence of it other than that was the way he most likely went to get to where he ended up next from where he was last known to be.

One of Regan's childhood homes VS the expansion of University and medical facilities?

uhm I think i go with the University and medical facilities, seems like a no brainer

as far as the conspiracy theories who cares i dont buy into them i only laugh at them

I think it makes some liberals laugh that Far Right Conservatives keep bringing up Reagan because the GOP of today would cast him out as a socialist and a leftie.

The establishment Republicans of today would cast Reagan out, but for exactly the opposite reasons than you state. The establishment Republicans are the leftist socialists who are endlessly annoyed by their Conservative base. Boehner wants more than anything to surrender to Obama. Hopefully, we will continue to weed these people out of the Republican Party.

I don't hate conservatives, but I do laugh at the stupid ones who are only capable of viewing the world as if it were some old cowboy movie.

Of course, I say the same things about the portion of the left that does the same thing.

Amnesty for illegal immigrants, laid foundation for cap and trade, reduction in nuclear weapon stockpiles, raised taxes 11 times, tripled national debt, appointed two SCOTUS judges who upheld Roe v. Wade, supported stricter gun control.

Sound like someone the Tea Party would vote for?

The spot would most appropriately used for a septic tank.

I love it... as do Democratic campaign strategists everywhere.

Just keep recruiting the Todd Akins', the Christine O'Donnell's, the Ken Buck's, the Richard Mourdock's, the Sharon Engel's and the Sarah Palin's...... lord knows where you find these people, but the Cons are good at it. That guy in Kentucky needs as whippin' from the right. Keep 'em coming...

I couldn't care even one iota.

The University of Chicago (absolutely no stranger to conservative luminaries: libertarian, Reaganite, or neoconservative), is supposedly not going to do that.

The vacant building in question is owned by the University of Chicago. University spokesman Jeremy Manier said they do plan to tear it down – but for medical and biological research buildings, not President Obama’s future library.
“The University’s permit request currently is under review by the city,” Manier wrote in an emailed statement. “Recent media reports that have speculated on other potential uses of the property are inaccurate.”

If it wasn't important enough to place on the National Registry of Historic Places, it's certainly not sacrosanct. If it was? They won't be able to remove it.

He lived in that house for less than a year and was in 5 different homes. This was a silly story. I laughed when I saw Erin Burnett say something on Twitter about how it was a bad thing to tear down the house. God damn Twitter makes professionals say the dumbest things.

Well IF that is true then I guess it is ok but then this is Chicago and might be a disinformation campaign.

If I continued focusing strictly on conservative intellectual history, the University of Chicago would have been one of the 4 or so best schools for my choice, due to the massive collection of material. They take care of those that are conservative in their university, especially in the economics and political science departments (it's the home of Milton Friedman, Albert Wohlstetter, Leo Strauss, Richard Weaver-but he was an English professor, a bunch of others).
