ut a new study shows that tens of thousands of people were actually discouraged from voting because of the long lines.According to an analysis by Theodore Allen, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Ohio State University, as many as 49,000 individuals in Central Florida did not vote because of the problems at the polls.
About 19,000 of those people would have backed former GOP nominee Mitt Romney, while the rest would have gone for President Barack Obama, according to Allen.
The Orlando Sentinel, which published the results of Allen's research, notes that those findings suggest "that Obama's margin over Romney in Florida could have been roughly 11,000 votes higher than it was, based just on Central Florida results. Obama carried the state by 74,309 votes out of more than 8.4 million cast."

Good job Florida keep it up being the shining example of ****ty electoral process!

Re: Florida's Long Lines On Election Day Discouraged 49,000 People From Voting: Repor

Or maybe, just maybe the voters should consider signing up for an early ballot and vote by mail. I have not stood in line to vote for years (local, State or National). Pretty easy way to avoid long lines.

That said, yes all States need to find a way to accomidate those who want to vote in person.

Re: Florida's Long Lines On Election Day Discouraged 49,000 People From Voting: Repor

the long lines were an absolute disgrace, and Florida is begging for a federal intervention. considering that election day isn't a holiday and that many people are paid by the hour, long lines amount to an effective poll tax. reading about six to eight hour waits really made me angry.

People in Iraq voted while under threat of getting their asses blown up...and people in Florida whined about long lines.

Cry me a river.

Luckily the United States can hold itself to a higher standard than Iraq.

Yep, and I guarded some of those people while they did it. You wouldn't believe how happy they were just for the opportunity to vote. Americans are spoiled.

Whenever a topic like this comes up, I find myself wondering how many people who espouse the above sentiments also espouse the following:

1. America is the greatest nation on Earth.
2. America is a beacon of freedom to the oppressed peoples of the Earth.
3. The Supreme Court shouldn't take into account the decisions of foreign courts when looking for precedents upon which to base their decisions.

The fact is, a lot of Americans are working crap jobs for asshole bosses and making **** wages, living paycheck to paycheck. A long line is going to discourage them from voting.

Are there other options? Of course. Do we do a good job of making sure people are aware of them and encouraging them to do so? I'd say this is proof that we don't.

It never ceases to amaze me that, despite our largesse, technology and know-how, we continue to struggle when it comes time to cast a ballot or take a census.

The fact of the matter is this. If a person wants to vote, there are many opportunities to do so. Show me a person that says they didn't have the opportunity to vote and I'll show you someone who really didn't care about voting to begin with. If a Marine in combat has the time to cast an absentee ballot, everyone has the time.

Well, thanks for responding to part of my post, I guess.

Re: Florida's Long Lines On Election Day Discouraged 49,000 People From Voting: Repor

Sniveling *****'s. Get an absentee ballot, no lines. Wow that is to hard for you?

It's not like they did not mail thousands of reminders you can get an absentee ballot weeks before the elections, plus commercials etc. Did I forget to mention the unending phone calls about absentee voting? So many in fact I had my land line turned off until after the election?

I voted, did not have to stand in any lines either.

1. America is the greatest nation on Earth.

It is. Duh. But of course I AM an American. I would imagine that the Irish feel that thier country is the greatest nation on Earth. Same with the Brits, French, Germans etc etc. There is nothing wrong with taking pride in ones country. Yet you throw it in here as if it a sin. If you don't like it so much then leave if you are here...if not then don't come here.

2. America is a beacon of freedom to the oppressed peoples of the Earth.

All depends on ones point of view. We are certainly a beacon compared to places like Iran, North Korea etc etc.

3. The Supreme Court shouldn't take into account the decisions of foreign courts when looking for precedents upon which to base their decisions.

Umm..DUH! No brainer! We have a totally different culture and system of law from any other country out there. Why should we look to foreign courts? Doing such a thing is like wanting to learn about Mexico's culture by studying the Irish culture.

If you don't know where to get one or how to fill it out or where to mail it by what deadline -- yeah.

It's not like they did not mail thousands of reminders you can get an absentee ballot weeks before the elections

Didn't get one.

Didn't see one.

Did I forget to mention the unending phone calls about absentee voting?

Nobody called me.

I voted, did not have to stand in any lines either.

Me either -- a big advantage of living in the sticks.

What is it with people picking the portion of my post they wish to respond to and ignoring the rest of it? That's twice so far in this thread alone.

Re: Florida's Long Lines On Election Day Discouraged 49,000 People From Voting: Repor

If you don't know where to get one or how to fill it out or where to mail it by what deadline -- yeah.

You voted, so it would be irrelevant. You also don't live in Florida so you would not know either way now would you?

Didn't get one.

So I guess you are not a registered voter in Florida huh.

So your entire waste of time post had absolutely nothing to do with the "49,000" disfranchisement registered Florida voters?

Thanks for wasting everyone's time. I certainly appreciate it.

Perhaps Florida should consider trying to open more polling places? I wonder how many people are served on average per designated polling place and how this compares with other states.

or to obtain a photo ID in the 4 years between elections only to whine about it being a poll tax........

Re: Florida's Long Lines On Election Day Discouraged 49,000 People From Voting: Repor

Dear Floridians.

Very sorry you are too stupid to know how to vote in your state. Pretty sad when you disenfranchise yourself. Maybe you are literally too stupid to take part in this process.

PS...for next time...

"How to Early Vote

Early voting begins 10 days before an election and ends on the 3rd day before any election in which there is a state or federal office race. Early voting may be held for a maximum of 12 hours, but no less than 6 hours, a day."

Re: Florida's Long Lines On Election Day Discouraged 49,000 People From Voting: Repor

That Huffington Post article - Huffington Post openly a Democratic publication - is based upon this:

"According to an analysis by Theodore Allen, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Ohio State University..."

An associate professor in industrial engineering from Ohio State?

That make the article just a punk comedy routine. It should have "but a Physical Education professor from Alabama disputes the claim, saying..."

Thanks, actually, for proving my point -- that despite all of our technology and knowledge and experience, we have yet to figure out a way to efficiently and consistently conduct our elections.

If it costs money to acquire said ID, and that ID is required to vote, it is a poll tax.

You don't live here. Every registered voters ID or drivers licence has their registration info. That is why they can contact us at any time via phone etc.

So if someone is to stupid take advantage of something that is so simple and right in front of their faces. Do you honestly think any technology will make a difference?

You have no argument.

I would say so...

I obviously do, because in a state where the last couple of Presidential elections came down to less than 100,000 votes, half that number went home because the lines were too long.

You want to make it out like it's a stupidity thing, but I don't think it is. I often get so busy that I have no time during the day to run errands or eat lunch, and I often end up forgetting to do important personal things day after day after day. If the polling places around here weren't open until 9pm and the lines weren't short enough to suit my schedule, I'd give up on them too, and chances are pretty good that I'd forget to mail in a ballot.

I'm not an idiot, I'm just frayed.
