I tell ya, all of these nut jobs are coming out of the woodwork.
His parents should do some time for this if the gun was found to come from the home.

Ohh, and this doesnt surprise me coming from "UTAH".

A sixth-grade Utah boy was in police custody late Monday after bringing a handgun to school, reportedly so that he could defend himself in the event of an attack, Granite School District officials said.
"He has alluded in his defense that he brought it as a way to defend himself and his friends if there was a Connecticut-style incident at the school," district spokesman Ben Horsley said.

I don't think he's a "nut job". I think he's an 11-year old child who is very scared.

When I was young one of the other kids brought a bullet to school, we managed to set it off in the bathroom. Not to mention the M80s we brought when we could get our hands on them, light em and flush them down the toilet (at school of course). There wasn't a boy in attendence who didn't have a pocket knife on them, and we all did stupid things with them (at school).

However, I agree the parents should be charged if it's their weapon. It's just common sense, here we have this national tragedy, the first thing a thinking person would do is to check to see that their children did not have access to the parents' guns. Safety 101.

I don't think he is a nutcase or a scared child. I think he was just a child that had access to a handgun and didn't understand the consequences of what he was doing.. I wonder how many more of these types of cases we will see in the future?

Oh my God and of course the relationship between this and their "belief system' will be totally lost on the gunnies.

He neatly illustrates the falsehood that possessing a gun makes you and your friends safer. He can't be blamed for thinking that, it's the prevailing meme. The gun's owner should be charged with child endangerment or whatever.

It's likely that there will be a number of reactionary events from the Connecticut disaster. When I read the MSN story on how they were reopening the schools in that area, my first thought was there's no way in hell my kids would be going back.

Why is that?

ohhh, i like to pass on stereotypes just like how people like to pass on stereotypes for those that live in Ca. What's that saying? ohh yeah, an eye for an eye...

His father and/or mother should be thrown in jail. There is absolutely no freakin' WAY!!! a kid his age should have access to a gun. What's the matter with gun owners?? WTH are they thinking???

An eye for an eye makes everyone blind.

And just what do you know about the child in question to bring you to that conclusion? From what I can tell he went the whole day handling the gun safety. It wasn't until he was told on by two other students that the school found out.

Let's not be too quick to indict all gun owners because these parents were lax. And we don't know the rest of the story yet. I agree, a kid his age shouldn't have access to a gun without meaningful supervision.

11 years old is certainly old enough to be familiar, and possibly quite proficient, with a .22 pistol or revolver. I get the impression from the article that the kid didn't consult with his parents on his decision and that isn't good but charging the parents with child endangerment based on nothing other than the fact that the kid had a gun in school is ridiculous.

It was a bad decision on the kids part but the logic of it is fine and dandy.

I'm not indicting all gun owners. I'm a gun owner. But I sure as **** know better than to leave it around where a sixth-grader can get his hands on it. I don't have any kids. Don't have many kid visitors. But even when I have strangers in my house (repair people and the like), my gun is out of their reach even if they're LOOKING for it. Really. How stupid can people be?

Kid takes his mothers guns and shoots 26 people. Other families with guns and youngsters in the house don't change a thing in their house. Unbelievable.

Oh, Jesus Christ. I'm making the assumption he got this gun from home. If a gun is available to a sixth-grader, the gun owner ought to be in jail. What the **** is wrong with people??

His logic stunk.

Seriously. I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with the kid. He's reacting to the news. But what the hell is wrong with the parents for letting this gun be accessible to the child? I mean the CT tragedy occurred when a boy took guns from his parent (who failed) to secure them. The FIRST thing people should have done after seeing the tragedy on the news is check on their guns and make sure they're locked up and/or well-hidden.

I don't know where in Utah this kid lives but in many parts of the west it isn't at all unusual for 11 year olds to be out hunting with their parents. Many people make it a point to teach their kids about gun safety and proper handling at a young age.

We didn't get a whole lot of information from the article so it's pretty damned rash to start passing judgement on the kid and his parents.

If someone owned a dog, and made sweet love to it, married it etc. would you also say "What's the matter with dog/pet owners?? WTH are they thinking???"

My point here is why group ALL gun owners with a single event. It does not make sense.

And you know I agree with that Maggie, gun safety is paramount. It was this comment I was reacting to:

What's the matter with gun owners??
